Mueller Files First Charges

Postby Absentia » Sat Oct 28, 2017 8:31 am

Boom. Multiple outlets are reporting a leak to CNN from "people familiar with the matter" indicating that charges have been filed against at least one person in connection with Robert Mueller's probe into the Trump campaign's alleged collusion with Russia. Currently no details on who or what the charges are for, but apparently the arrest(s) will be made on Monday.

Anyone care to guess who the lucky winner is? My money is on Paul Manafort or one of his associates.

Seth Abramson's twitter thread in which he discusses which Trump associates are most likely.

I'm gonna play it safe and say it'll be Flynn, though my heart really lands on Kusner being the one getting charged.

The late night threads on reddit suggested this "leak" may have been intentional on Mueller's part. It suddenly gets dropped on a Friday night, leaving a whole weekend to stew before Monday. Mueller's probably got a lot of people wiretapped and bugged. If anyone he has a tiny thread of a suspicion towards is dumb enough to try to book a last minute flight out of the country, he'll have a new lead to follow.

Mueller apparently runs a pretty tight operation, so I would also guessing any leak was intentional.

I'm betting on Flynn as being the one with the charges.

I'm amused by the pro-Donald part of the web that is seriously convinced Hillary Clinton is the one getting arrested cause one of the Podesta's got interviewed and the Uranium One deal. That part of the investigation just happened recently, and mostly has to do with the possibility of a Russian agent trying to infiltrate her campaign, but yeah, he's going to arrest Hillary herself. I have a crow right in front of me ready to eat when Hillary was the target of the Mueller campaign all along, I plan to chase it with my shot of pride I'm prepared to swallow.

I'm surprised that Don Jr. is almost as likely and Kushner is more likely than "some person we haven't heard of."

I feel like that's actually the most likely option and therefore I'm going to go with "some person we've never heard of" as my guess.

Part of me wants it to be Flynn though, because he'll flip like a gymnast playing tiddlywinks. Part of me hopes it's someone undisclosed and Mueller is going after the Tweeter-in-Chief's financial malfeasance: that would be poetic justice in my eyes, more so than him being taken down for treason.

I see people on Twitter already claiming this is cover for/distraction from the Uranium One deal that supposedly happened.

Ugh everything is a distraction, the uranium one deal is a distraction from the Russian investigation, the Russian investigation is a distraction from the uranium one deal. Ugh so many distractions. But you know what isn't a distraction, how awesome trump is.

I'm going to bet it's someone we have never heard of and whose crime is so technical that we all lose interest.

Tactically speaking, it wouldn't make a lot of sense for Mueller to make his opening move on somebody who isn't significant in the big picture of the investigation; if he arrests some loosely connected nobody that would be a pretty clear sign that he's not getting anywhere.

Maaaaaybe. Although I guess we've got to think of this whole thing as a marathon, not a sprint. It's his first move, sure, but by nabbing someone lower on the totem pole (and without the means to fund a legal defence on par with Flynn, Manafort, Trump, etc.), they've got themselves someone who could turn evidence on someone slightly-higher on the pole...repeat ad infinium, and you've got yourself a big player. I mean, that's how they got the mob, right? Or I might be remembering the plot of The Untouchables, who knows.

I guess another advantage to nabbing, say, someone on the same level as a fixer or something is that you can see how how everyone else under your scope reacts to it. If Mueller grabs a PA and Manafort then starts booking flights to non-extradition countries or trying to discredit them in the press, that's a pretty good indication that person knows something bad.

But we'll see!
