"The power of makeup"

Postby OrangeEyebrows » Thu Jun 05, 2014 10:38 pm

I can't be the only one who thinks this a) must look like it's been applied with a trowel in real life and b) in many cases takes a lot of the character out of their faces in favour of one specific "look" (because heaven forfend someone should have a quirkily shaped mouth or *gasp* freckles)?

I have a hard time telling, maybe it's just that the things I can tell are so different, but some of them really seem to have different face shapes and stuff - someone not faceblind please tell me if all of those are the same people in the before and after shots. Also the one with the 6 pictures step by step, is it just my miswired brain that thinks the last one looks really really 'shopped? I'm talking uncanny valley here - I may not be the best benchmark for a reaction, but even if they are real and unaltered, if people start reacting to you as though you're an overly realistic robot (and that's not your goal), your face may be a little too artificial.

I think a lot of the most dramatic changes (besides skin tone/evenness) are from them being carefully arranged in a more flattering pose in the after pictures.

They appear to be the same people, yes - the different face shapes seem to be the result of *crazily* heavy, stage makeup type shading. Like, I'm pretty sure that face-to-face these women would look as if they were wearing pancake clown makeup. There's one in particular (fifth one down) where the after appears (to me) to have a completely different skin tone, to the extent that she looks to be of a different racial background.

I agree about how they're positioned and so on (though I did note they don't do the glum before / smiling after thing). I particularly noticed that the black girl was against a much lighter background in the after, whereas in the before the background kind of clashed with her skin tone and made her look sallow. Much less flattering to her complexion. Plus a lot of the difference there was that her skin looked more matte in the after pic.

They also changed their hair a LOT.

Is this supposed to be positive ("Look how pretty makeup can make you!") or negative ("Look how fake makeup can make you!") I can't decide.

My mother, by the way never wears makeup. She says it's just not worth the effort.

I think the former, but I'm not certain either.

I would say the former. It is stupid though. Like Orange said the real-life effect is going to be very different from the photographed effect. Pretty much everyone looks bad in photos with poor lighting and the makeup applied is very clearly optimized for photographs. Further, what the heck is going on with leopard print lady and purple shirt lady? The first has a really shopped looking line under her neck and the second has much darker skin on her hands than her face.

I could take any one of you and theatrical-makeup your face and change its shape. Whether I could then plaster over it well enough to make it look natural, I dunno. But I'm pretty sure those people didn't either.

I agree that there's no way those women look good up close (post-makeup). I believe Cher called them Monets in Clueless; good looking from a distance but a mess up close. Skin is NOT supposed to look like plastic!

Anybody can look awful if you put them in bad lighting and an unflattering angle/pose/expression.

Some of those women went from adorable to dolls, which seems really sad to me.

This is my favorite one.

I have no idea why, it makes me laugh. Everything from her looking like she switched genders, to the random dude's face in the second picture.

I saw something similar with porn stars before and after makeup. Actually, I swear some of the ladies in these pictures are some of them...

I don't get applying a shit ton of makeup in order to look like I've been photoshopped IRL. Then again, I rarely wear makeup. I sometimes will wear eyeshadow or eyeliner. Occasionally both with mascara. Sometimes I'll wear a lipstain. When I feel the need to go "all out" I'll apply all of them and I *might* apply like a physician's formula powder for a "glow."

But I don't do this shit. This is...too much.

Most of these are probably real. I spend/spent a lot of time on a very nasty, catty cosplay website that mostly is just comprised of women calling each other ugly/fat, talking up their own cosplay work and then occasionally posting cool work and tips on makeup and how-to tutorial stuff.

I know and have done some of these types of tricks and it's not even as hard as it seems. Some of them I can tell have post-processing/photoshop on the finals but not all of them. It mostly just involves many layers, highlighting/shadow with bronzer and white/light powder and then just a ton of patient blending and usually things like false eyelashes and very careful lip lining.

Why cosplayers do it is because you're, obviously, trying to look like a fictional character. I don't get it in everyday life as its soooo time consuming. Also, in cosplay only some of the time will someone even wait to take a picture of you and good goddamn luck finding a picture of you online even if you cant walk 5 feet through the hall without getting stopped and bombarded for shots. Because of the extremely low percentage that will get posted online, it's important to have crazy insane makeup that makes your skin look perfect from any direction because chances generally are good that the only photo that ends up online is one with you making the absolute dumbest face possible (I have a really good example of this but Im at work, I will post it later). It's so common it's a generally accepted rule of cosplay. The more photos people take of you, the higher the chance the only one that goes online and not directly into a fap folder is one of you looking like awkward incarnate.

Anyway all that is to say, yeah this stuff is specifically for photographs. This method of heavy highlights and shadows is specifically made for medium-long distance glamour shots, not for getting up close in someones face in person or anything.

I don't go crazy like some of these, but I do use the same general practices for cosplay.

Eyebrow pencil, mad false eyelashes, heavy bronzer/shading/highlighting to appear to change the shape of the face + probably some photoshop, for reals, these people obviously dont care about altering their appearance.

It really is easier than it seems, despite how crazy it looks.
