At the squire’s words, Dagobert instinctively clutches the deep-green emerald now hanging on a piece of cord around his neck.

Moving the Jewel Crew along. Waiting on a Hunting roll for Team Wolf

Château Lorcé, Lorcé-chèssion Estate

Ermeline stops fussing long enough for Sir Adele to see to he father's wounds. Once that is done the old knight can be put on a litter and taken back to the clearing where they had met Giselle.

By the time they make it there the pavilion looks to have aged as much as Ermeline's sire. Its poles are bent inward and its canvas bleached and filled with holes. The knights' own shelters are in the same condition as they were left in though Leufroy's has be torn up and thrown halfway down the hill. There is no sign of the priest nor of any struggle but tracks larger than even Renier would leave lead northwest into the wood.

Much of the night is gone but they have no hope of finding their missing companions in the dark so they get what rest they can and in the morning the knights escort Lady Ermeline and her father, who has fallen unconscious once more, to their manor just two hours away.

The entire household is shocked and amazed to see their lord return and the Steward, Sir Jacques, sends riders to the Duke's court and to the Bishop of Liege to inform them of the miraculous return. The band leaves them after a hearty breakfast to search for Leufroy and Sir Dagobert accompanied by the manor's huntmaster and foresters with the regrets of Sir Jacques who must attend to his duties and cannot assist.

Even with a dozen dogs and local guides it is not until noon that they find the scent of their companions but once found and on the trail they quickly find Sir Dagobert, his squire and Rev Leufroy. On the way back they hear Leufroy's remarkable tale of chasing away the giant who had captured him with the Word of the Lord and how he now has the lost relic in his possession.

Sir Dagobert is largely quiet but the jewel about his neck is impossible to miss.

Dagobert seems much improved from when he was first entranced by the emerald, but he is still acting oddly. And he would not be wearing that evil thing thus proudly, were he wholly in his right mind. Rashad keeps a close eye on him, but at the same time looks for an opportunity to speak quietly with his other cousins.

"We can't let him stay under the influence of that thing, if we've any power to prevent it, but I doubt we'll get him to give it up, save by main force. And I'm loathe to even speak to him, lest I provoke him - I suspect he too would fight like a madman to keep his treasure."

I don't know if I can use any skill (Intrigue? Awareness?) to try glean any more information about what state Dagobert is really in from watching his actions?

Esneux Village Church

It is spare hours before dawn when Sir Coenwulf finally leads the group back to Esneux and bangs on the church door. The priest's young assistant first spies them through the vision bolt and he calls for Father Aigulf. A moment later the priest appears in his night clothes and opens the door.

"Lord in Heaven," he exclaims at Sir Renier's wounds, "What devilry is this?"

The knights and squires are taken inside where the priest looks over their wounds. He concludes with a grimace that Renier is in no condition to travel and once he hears their extraordinary tale knows that they cannot stay.

"Sir Ulfgar will return and when he does he will bear a sword wound the same as those ensorcelled men of his do. Lord Eingar will be furious at this breach of hospitality and while I've no doubt his son will not be spared from his wroth, that Ulfgar will survive as he is the heir."

"You men, however," he says gravely, "you will hardly be so lucky. I can get your belongings from the castle and with them Sir Renier must be placed in a litter and you must flee back to the Duke at once."

Return to Bastogne

With their missions complete and information enough to report both groups of Cousins head home.

First to arrive is the group with the Jewel and Sir Dagobert's proud display of it causes quite the stir. For Rashad, Shadi and Adele though the attention is worrying for no one seems to think anything is wrong with the gem at all. There is naught but praise for their victory and marvel at the green object's beauty.

Duke Thierry is still away on campaign with the Prince, so they make their report to Sir Egier of the Gate*.

No word comes from the group sent to Esneux until the next day when a rider arrives to say that Sir Renier has been sorely wounded and will not arrive for another 2 days. Shortly after Sirs Ragnar, Coenwulf and Rosamund arrive ahead of their cousin to give their report now that Renier is safely within Ducal lands.

*I previously said he was the marshal but he is not. For clarity the marshal is also away with the Duke and Egier is the seniormost officer at Bastogne.

"Wow, that's pretty lovely," Rosamund smiles.

"Isn't it? Look at it!" Dagobert grins.

"Mhm, that is what I'm currently doing, so-"

"-so beautiful. But you know, don't look for too long, haha." Dagobert tightens his hold on Precious.

"Haha! Okay?"

On the other side of the hall, Coenwulf watches the exchange. "So what happened on your mission again?"

"It is a long story," Rashad says quietly, "but Dagobert has been under some kind of spell ever since he picked up that cursed object."

"So why are you letting him hold it?" Ragnar raises a brow. He hefts his axe. "We should destroy the vile thing!"

"Patience, Ragnar!" Leufroy cries.

"He will try to destroy you first," Shadi takes a step forward. "And who knows what will happen if you do take it away? Preserving our dear cousin's sanity is as important as getting rid of it!"

Adele sighs. "What about you? Did you find this wolf knight? What happened with Renier anyway? You had us worried with that message!"

"We found the wolfknight. And some of his friends. We dealt with some of them, but Ulfgar wounded Renier and escaped," Coenwulf grimaces.

"That is most unlucky."

"Yes." Coenwulf wonders how Aelred is. "Has there been any news of the army...?"

"The Duke is still away. I am sure they will be victorious and well. God's favour is with them," Leufroy says reassuringly.

Coenwulf nods. "I should report to Sir Egier."

Sir Egier listens grimly to the tales he is told. Though the Knight of the Jewel has been defeated it is still ill news and foreboding. The hunt for the Devil Wolf is even darker due to its failure to slay the monster.

"Sir Eingar has never been a friend of our Duke and I fear this will cause no end of grief between them," he raises his hand to stay any protests. "No one hear doubts what you faced and who the culprit is, but you are Duke Thierry's kin and thus to accuse Sir Ulfgar is to invite a conflict between clans. And though Lord Esneux is no threat to Bastogne, his fortress is too strong and the terrain too poor to send an army to invest him without great difficulty."

Egier will not risk such a battle on his own initiative while the Duke is away at war with the Prince and most of the army. He also cannot say what will become of the former Jewel Knight as that is a matter for the Duke, and perhaps even for the King himself to decide as it deals with the succession of both enfoeffed and allodial lands.

So there is naught to do but wait out the long weeks until the return of the Duke.

The weeks stretch on long past summer and into September before word arrives that King Pepin has been slain in his victorious campaign to the south and that, by Salic Law, both Carloman and Carolus shall be named Kings of the Franks and divide rule of the kingdom between them. Duke Thierry is required to attend the dual coronation and is thus further delayed in his return.

When the Duke does finally arrives it is the day before Michaelmas and the Duchess has prepared a great feast to both welcome her husband and his knights home and to honor the patron of warriors, St. Michael the Archangel, and give thanks for his deliverance.

It is a fine meal and a fine time, with many chances to exchange tales and boast of feats performed. Many raise their mugs in toasts to King Carolus, who now rules over the north and east of Frankland.

For Sirs Rashad and Shadi, it is a time of fasting and reflection, for Michaelmas falls this year on the eighth day of Ramadan. It is ever difficult to reconcile knightly and religious obligation, but Duke Thierry is not known to interfere in observance. He would say it is better for a knight to have the wrong faith than to have no faith at all.

Weeks later, while the Duke clearly backs King Carolus and prefers him to King Carloman, he was a close friend of the late King Pepin and so his court is covered in morning and he declines, and is granted leave, from attending King Carloman as he holds his winter court in Aachen a spare two days to the north.

More ill tidings come during Advent, when all the court is preparing for Christmastide. His Holiness, Pope Paul I, has died and the selection of a successor is underway. Some speculate that the next Pontiff might be more sympathetic to the Lombards than Pope Paul had been.

And so ends The Year of Our Lord, Seven Hundred, Sixty and Eight, also called the One Hundred and Fifty First Year of the Hijra, and said to be Four Thousand, Five Hundred and Twenty Nine years since the Day of Creation.

I am lazy. For XP checks roll for anything I told you to roll during the year. Then pick two skills, a passion and a trait to roll for as well.

Anyone who wants to play AD769 respond below.

What a crappy year. Your king dies. Your religious head dies. You get attacked by a freakish wolf-man creature and fail to kill him in turn. >_> Oh well, Ulfgar'll have a shoulder wound to remember him by! shakes fist

-> Personal Events Table Renier's faith has been slightly shaken with all that he has seen. He carelessly swears and curses, and sits listlessly through mass. The local chaplain shakes his head when the local lord's name is brought up. (Attitude: Church -1. Oops?)

-> Winter training Renier trains all summer, determined to protect his realm against all dangers next time o/ In his free time, he relaxes by playing the lute. (1 in Spear, 1 Awareness, 1 in Siege, 1 in Instrument)

-> NPC Events Table The Cousins' grandmother, an aunt of King Carolus, is promoted to a position within his palace. (Honour check, Love (Family) check and +10 Glory for PKs)

-> Michaelmas/Christmas feasts Renier spends more time with Machteld, memorising her eyes and smile. For perhaps the first time, he envies his bachelor knight cousins, who get to stay at Bastogne all year round!
