Close to sundown, the knights and Adwen are brought from their chambers to the Great Hall. The structure is even larger than the bathhouse, and two stories tall. The walls are lined in fine tapestries, above them hang the various colorfully painted shields of the household knights, some forty or so of them, between iron wrought candle fixtures. A fire pit separates the High Table, at the far end, from the tables below, behind which a pair of thrones are placed, beautifully carved and etched with silver. A pair of heralds stand at the entryway with trumpets in hand, blowing a fanfare for the guests as they arrive and announcing them by name in turn. Sir Alcias is there close by to show everyone to their seats.

Once everyone is situated, another fanfare blasts and the King and Queen enter, followed by their two elder daughters, Princess Angharad (the auburn Ssquire), and Princess Avice (who had tended Leiryn earlier). King Cadwy is a short, slightly framed, old man with a kindly wrinkled face. His head is mostly bald, the remaining brown-and-silver hair around his crowned head sticking up wildly, his nose beak-like, and his eyes large and hollow-set; the effect of which has him resembling something of an anthropomorphic Horned Owl. He walks slowly, with the help of a cane and the steady arm of the beautiful and sturdy Queen locked arm-in-arm with him. The Princesses pare off to sit at the heads of the lower tables while their parents take their seats in the twin thrones.

Wine, mead, and ale are served first, and served quickly. The first course is cheese quiche paired with ale.

Eliver and Persidius are sat at the High Table, along with King Cadwy, Queen Melwaise, Sir Brastias of Cornwall and Princess Ereduch of the Picts.

Terwynn, Adwen, and Miles are sat just on the other side of the hearth, in close proximity to the High Table. The Princesses are here, as well as Sir Alcias the Dwarf Chamberlain, Sir Jordanus of Cornwall, who had been in the bathhouse earlier, and Lady Codawr, the Widow of Wells.

Leiryn is seated far below the salt, among various of the local Knights and Ladies of the court of Caer Sulis, as well as the Pictish escorts of Princess Ereduch and the traveling companions of the Cornish emissaries.

An extra dish of quiche and tankard of ale are left wanting a place, and are left with a shrug next to Miles. He resists the temptation however, despite his hunger and the pleasant cheesy aroma, and indulges only of a fair portion of the course. Princess Angharad, who had evidently heard something of the Leaping Knight, asks him to tell them all a story of his exploits, while she takes the extra ale for herself. He manages to entertain them all with a gripping and mostly true yarn, and everyone about him is contented.

Some effect of the candlelight, the jovial atmosphere, or perhaps even the gods themselves seem to shine down on Terwynn, and everyone around her seems to recieve her a little more genially than they ordinarily would. Later, she notices a knight insult a lady, and rises to her defense, only to have the knight and all the onlookers laugh in her face at the attempt.

Eliver learns a thing or two about the King and his family. Cadwy is over four hundred years old, in fact four hundred ten to be precise in August, born in the same year that Vesuvius erupted, although Eliver does not know if the events are related. He himself is not and has never been a knight, for he is older than the institution of knighthood itself. The King has only been married to Queen Melwaise for some quarter of a century, and they have three daughters; Angharad, the eldest, who is in training to be a faerie knight like her mother, Avice the middle child, who takes after her father and seems to prefer the life of a lady, and Alene the youngest, who is not yet four years old, obviously absent from the feast. Cadwy, being immortal or at least exceptionally long-living, but the same not being true of any of his wives or children, has children in batches as it were, so that they may all grow up with siblings in their own time. Sir Urswn, the Lord of Wells who had died recently, was a bastard son of an earlier batch. He is, as Merlin mentioned, something of an extremely distant great uncle or cousin to Earl Roderick given that his grandmother Sulis and his ancestor Salis were siblings some thousand years ago, but he is in fact even more recently related than that, for Roderick's maternal grandmother had also been one of Cadwy's daughters, which in fact makes Cadwy a great-grandfather of Roderick, although not of the male line, and such a relation does not bind them by kinship as such.

Lady Adwen learns, from her gossip, that the lady who had been insulted had been Lady Codawr, the Widow of Wells, the knight who had insulted her had been Sir Bubo 'The Knight of the Owl', one of King Cadwy's bastard sons and Marshall of Summerland, half-brother of Sir Urswn, Codawr's dead husband who was now said to be haunting Wells castle after his death of being drowned and devoured by Water Leapers. Sir Urswn had also been Cadwy's bastard, although they had been estranged many years. His birth, as well as that of Sir Bubo, had predated Cadwy's marriage to Melwaise by a few decades. Sir Urswn had been the pride of the kingdom as a young man, slaying many monsters and rescuing many damsels, but had chafed at the rigors of courtly life and of the world of politics, and so had gone adventuring many years on the continent. He had only been back in Summerland for five years or so, now an old man, and grew very fat and often drunk from his constant feasting. No sober knight would have dared out into the marshes at night as he had done in search of the water leapers, and he paid the price with his life. Now his voice could be heard wailing from the now abandoned hall, demanding tribute of food and wine. His disembodied voice terrifies the local peasants, warning them that he will lead an invasion from hell if he is not avenged. None of the knights of Summerland are particularly interested in taking the quest; he was an old man with few friends at court, even King Cadwy was not especially fond of him among his many children. Many knights simply fear the Water Leapers, who are deviously cunning and treacherous, and will sooner gang up on a knight to pull him into the water where his armor will drown him than fight with him in any kind of fairness, like a Wyvern might do. Lady Codawr, still wearing mourning garb, herself has little to say about her husband, other than enigmatically muttering "He was some kind of man. What does it matter what you say about people?" Adwen also learns that the dead knight's minstrel is there in the back of the hall, and might hear more of his song at the cost of a farthing if she is interested.

Persidius meanwhile ascertains something or other about Sir Brastias and Princess Uradech. Sir Brastias is the captain of the guard for Duke Gorlois, sent here on the Duke's behalf, and Princess Uradech is of the Jagent picts in particular, who as Merlin had related, are now aligned with Gorlois in his rebellion. It would seem they are both here on a joint delegation, and have been here for several days already. They apparently brought gifts with them, and it would seem to Persidius that their intention is to persuade King Cadwy to join Summerland to their cause in rebelling against King Uther.

Leiryn, down at the far end of the hall, is asked by the rough household knights and pictish bodyguards there to tell them tales of his exploits, but he demures, protesting that he has little to boast of. He is praised for his modesty. Just then, Sir Alcias the Chamberlain appears behind him, and tells him that the King would like to see him. He is presented before King Cadwy who, after sharing a muttered conversation with his queen, says "We have heard tell of you, Sir Leiryn. Ran to burn Saxon ships as a masterless squire with no scrap of plunder to be had, knighted upon the battlefield for your valor by the Crown Prince himself, led knights, won both great honors and great treasures in France, and now been bit nearly in half by a Wyvern and lived to tell of it. My daughter, Princess Avice, is evidently impressed by your record and would like to meet your acquaintance and have you share her place at table tonight." If he consents, Leiryn is taken to the head of one of the tables, given a much better seat, properly introduced to the beautiful Lady Avice who had tended his wounds, and sat directly beside her for the remainder of the feast.

Re: [Pendragon RP] 489 Adventure - "Always Salisbury"

The second course of the feast is Stuffed Boar, paired with wine.

Leiryn gets to talking with the princess, and before long they're smiling, laughing, even flirting; as he flirts with her he can tell that she is flirting back. They talk, among other things, about their shared love of falconry and even archery, for the lady herself uses a bow to hunt. She is surprised to learn that he is able to read, but is delighted for reading is also a love of hers. The castle has a small library in one of the towers, she tells him, across from the Mews; an extreme rarity for any castle in this period to have more than a single bible, let alone an entire room for keeping books in.

Adwen politely excuses herself from her seat and goes to find the dead knight's minstrel. For a farthing, he plucks his lute and begins orating a poem about the life of his lord. It doesn't rhyme, and it's more lyrical than musical, but he explains that it's a work-in-progress:

"Behold, for now I sing of Urswn, whose story is Immortal.
Of house magnificent was he long ago born, son of Amber and King Cadwy.
Lost as a child was he, fostered with Sir Karl, of the tribe of Cain.
Yet never did he yield to evil's touch, the goodness of his soul did he keep.
As a man he did proof himself of many a trial, but not content was he.
He journeyed into lands far and wide, and into fear itself.
Never a friend did he find, always the stranger was he.
From no danger did he shrink, about for all challengers even at the midnight's deadly chime.
Taken to his death in his own lands at last, his voice only to be heard on the wind's other side"

After his tale is completed, the minstrel pours out a few drops of white wine onto the rushes of the Hall in remembrance for his master.

Eliver meanwhile challenges Princess Ereduch to a board game and wagers a full Forty Shillings, which he proceeds to lose in its entirety.

Terwynn finds a golden ring with an amethyst set into it, and overcoming her desire to keep it, returns it to its rightful owner, who turns out to be Sir Jordanus. She then gets caught up in a conversation with some of the greater landholders present at the feast about estate management, which she takes an an opportunity to boast of her wealth.

Miles finds himself embroiled in an awkward conversation regarding Faerie Lore, of which he knows little and can offer less in contribution. He then overhears a peace of information which may yet prove useful.

Persidius then continues to learn what he can of the political situation, and manages to learn a great deal from body language and questions artfully posed as casual dinner conversation. There are two wars going on at present; the War between Salisbury and Summerland, and the war between Cornwall and King Uther. Queen Melwaise would be of a mind to join the two wars into one war, and thereby wheel back upon Salisbury with the full combined might of Summerland, Cornwall, and Jagent, which would assuredly crush Roderick's forces, possibly conquer (or reconquer in the case of Wheelwell and Westfort) lands, and definitely send a clear message to the other warlords that Summerland is not to be trifled with. Cadwy, on the other hand, is and has always been more of an isolationist. He is amenable to peace with Salisbury if good terms can be worked out and the diplomats behave themselves, but he could yet join the war against Uther to win his independence, which is exactly what Merlin wants to avoid.

The third course is Bream and Eel pies, paired with mead.

Eliver pricks his ears to gossip but fails to learn anything interesting; save that the butler's wife just had another baby.

Terwynn, having made the acquaintance of Sir Jordanus after giving him his ring back, dances and flirts with the knight. He seems quite struck with her, and at one point whispers an offer to go somewhere quiet.

Miles hears about the contents of the great Keep. Beneath the base, in fact in a cave beneath the motte, the King keeps his own bath chamber, where the magic springs run strongest, and the waters would heal anyone from anything but the sheerest death in a mere instant. That is where the King spends most of his time of late, since his injury; seeing him up and about like this is somewhat rare. The king's bed chamber is of course in the tower, as are those of his daughters. Also in the tower is said to be a treasury of several rooms, packed with all of his gold, silver, finery, including a library, and even, as rumors would have it, an enchanted armory. On the top of the parapet he apparently keeps astronimical equipment for divining some arcane knowledge from the stars.

Adwen learns a thing or two about Sir Alcias. He is an oddity of his people; one of the very few Dwarves out and roaming the world of men. His father was apparently some dwarf-lord called Toady, who rules beneath a mountain in some enchanted land. He entered King Cadwy's service as part of Queen Melwaise's retinue when they were married, as a mere Herald, standing in doorways blowing trumpets, identifying strange knights and all that. He accompanied King Cadwy on his voyage to farthest Thule, for Dwarves are apparently quite sturdy to the cold, and saved the King's life after his perilous encounter with old King Shield. On their return to Summerland, Alcias was promoted to Chamberlain of the castle, and has served honorably ever since. One pet peeve of his, he is quite a proud dwarf, and cannot stand to be mocked for his height. He was dismissed about half a dozen servants so far for doing so, and beat an apology out of Sir Bubo in a duel for the same.

Leiryn learns from Avice that Merlin had been and gone a few days before, and told Cadwy as much about Eliver's delegation as he'd told Eliver's delegation about Cadwy, to persuade him but especially Melwaise to receive and listen to their peace offer so soon after the humiliating defeat in the forest. It would seem that the Archdruid hadn't really had a plan for if Eliver and the others simply decided to turn back to Salisbury, and that Summerland is not as eager for peace as their royal welcome could have lead them to hope. Avice also intimates, quietly, that she wasn't meant to hear, but that she'd eavesdropped and heard something or other about Leiryn and a demon. She looks into his eyes again, past his eyes, like she had at the bathhouse, not mockingly or gawkingly, but with a kind curiosity.

Persidius manages to glean that what Leiryn may be thinking is too good to be true, is well in fact true, and even better. It had been suggested to Cadwy, by Merlin, that for many good reasons which Persidius knows (his war record and fabulous wealth at such a young age), and some obscure reasons that are alluded to but which Persidius is unable to discern (that Leiryn has a magical daughter), he might be a good match with one of Cadwy's daughters. Both Angharad and Avice were told of this, and both managed to get a good look at him in the Batthhouse when he came in. Of the two, Avice elected to have the courtship initiated for her. Merlin and Cadwy both knew that such a match would only be possiible if peace reigned between Summerland and Salisbury, and so if the match is agreeable to them, a betrothal might incentivize the two parties to come to agreement quickly. King Cadwy had apparently wanted at first to simply and bluntly make the offer to Leiryn in open court, man to man, old-fashioned to put it extremely mildly, but his queen had explained to him that thngs have not been done that way in generations; that a courtship is required, and besides that if Cadwy simply goes around offering his daughters, soon enough everyone will want one, let alone the fact that peace is not at all assured and Melwaise might end up having to kill Leiryn on the battlefield before long. Cadwy cededto his wife on the matter of what constitutes "modern" practice and agreed to go about it coyly, but even now they're having something of an argument quietly between themselves here at the feast about which is the common practice these days; Cadwy thinks it *still* must be the groom who pays the father a brideprice, Melwaise insists patiently that these days the father pays the groom a dowry. Even as they dicker, Leiryn and Avice seem to be getting along famously down below. Although he loves his children, King Cadwy has grown rather blase about marrying off over the years; he apparently stopped giving all that much of a damn sometime during the reign of Diocletian, and he's about as powerful now as he ever wants to be. He would have seriously considered trading offspring with Gorlois, had they not only had sets of daughters eligible to marry; and this might be to the advantage of Salisbury, because Roderick does have a son, albeit an infant, but one foretold to survive and grow strong. A betrothal between the Earl's infant son and the King's three-year-old daughter Alene, might be just the thing to grease the wheels of peace between the two realms.

Terwynn: 3
Leiryn: 5

Re: [Pendragon RP] 489 Adventure - "Always Salisbury"

Postby Cpt._Funkotron » Fri Sep 06, 2019 11:12 pm

Almond cakes and wine are served for the last course.

Eliver happens to hear that they bailiff of Bristol was killed in a riding accident.

Persidius gathers that Cadwy is concerned about the Water-Leaper problem, although none of his court will volunteer and he will not order anyone into it. Other than devouring his elderly and estranged bastard son, the Water-Leapers have also been preying on fishermen, ferrymen, and children who wander into the wrong parts of the wetlands. Coastal commerce is suffering, and people are complaining. It's the sort of problem that he would be able to solve himself were he personally at his full strength.

In the idleness and drunkenness of the feast, someone remarks of Leiryn that he seems to lack passion, which he responds to by launching into a speech for the love of his friends and all he would do for them. Everyone nearby is impressed, and the accusation rebuffed. Princess Avice then starts taking an interest in sprucing up Leiryn's clothing. He had never lived on his own until recently, and had only just the prior year come into serious money, needless to the say of the fact that he had not brought his best clothes nor any servants on what was supposed to be a military operation. Improvement is to be had. She adjusts his cloak, undoes and redoes the clasp, brushing her fingers against his collarbone. She takes his hand in hers, for to better spot-clean a bit of grease from the sleeve of his forearm with her handkerchief. She brushes some hair from his eyes.

Terwynn beats Sir Jordanus in a game of 'wooden wisdom', although he was far too distracted with the firelight catching in her golden hair and sparkling in her eyes to have much wisdom left to spare. Terwynn is then encountered by an elderly woman knight, who had been fast friends with Terwynn's mother many years ago. She regales her of many stories, and before long, the knight is arranged to stay as Terwynn's guest at her estate.

At some point in the festivities, King Cadwy gets up out of his throne and hobbles around the lower tables with his walking stick. He stops to talk with Adwen about Don, the mother goddess, and she impresses him with her knowledge and devotion.

Miles is related the troubles of a knight who has fallen on hard times, and will soon have to release a personal valet from his service. Miles wishes the boy the best of luck, but offers no further help. King Cadwy then calls upon Miles to tell them all a story, and Miles holds the hall in rapture for its duration. Applause rings out at its end, and the King calls for the story to be told again, received just as well as it had been before.

At last, the feast comes to an end. the tables are cleared and the scraps carted off for the beggars and lepers of the town. The hall is cleared and the tables are replaced with cots and bedrolls for many of the guests, while Eliver, Persidius, Leiryn, Terwynn, Adwen, and Miles are escorted back to the west tower through the cool night air, where warmed beds await them.

Miles: 9
Terwynn: 7
Leiryn: 9
Eliver: 6
Persidius: 6
Adwen: 2

***

The next day, Sir Alcias arrives late into the morning after the knights have all had copious time to sleep in, and tells them that King Cadwy shall receive the negotiators in his Solar, after the noon-day meal. This should leave them plenty of time to wash up, dress, and eat. The presence of all is not required. Those who do not accompany Eliver have, as they had yesterday, the freedom of the Castle, save the inner ward.

Sir Alcias also mentions, with a sly smile, that Princess Avice plans to go hawking today, and would like Sir Leiryn to accompany her.
He also mentions that Sir Jordanus has made inquiries after Sir Terwynn, and sent her the ring he had returned to him the other night, as a token of his affection.
Sir Brastias is in talks with some of the other knights of the castle to organize a horse race.
Out in the courtyard, Princess Angharad is out sparring with Princess Ereduch who fights in the Pictish fashion, bare above the waist, which has attracted many onlookers.
The servants can be heard muttering among themselves something or other about "The Bear Tower", apparently sitting on the north side of the castle.

***

When he is ready, Eliver is escorted under armed escort into the inner ward of the castle, into the keep, up the stairwell, and into the King's Solar. There, King Cadwy and Queen Melwaise are waiting, along with their Seneschal and Sir Alcias, in his role as Chamberlain.

Once everyone is seated comfortably, King Cadwy begins by making clear that he is agreeable to a peace being reached without any more blood needing be shed. He qualifies this however, by saying that he requires Earl Roderick to make rightful amends for this most recent aggression, which left more than a few good knights of Summerland dead, and return to him those lands and rights which Roderick had usurped of him seven years ago, lest Summerland take up the cause of reconquering them now.

His demands are as follows:
- Wheelwell Hundred
- Westford Hundred
- Various rights, privileges, and liberties of those same lands
- £500 in silver
- £300 in gold
- Twenty Chargers

Eliver's letter of authorization and instruction made it clear that Earl Roderick will not surrender any of his lands under any circumstances, he would sooner simply fight for them. The other demands, in total, far exceed a fair recompense, but this is to be expected. It was Eliver who had come to Cadwy, not the other way around, and this is but the opening bid, the first offer of many. Eliver's task over the coming days of peace talks is to whittle the demands down into something that would be agreeable to Earl Roderick.

For each day of negotiations, Eliver must roll either Courtesy or Orate.

Critical Success: Two demands are struck from the agreement.
Success: One demand is struck from the agreement.
Failure: The demands stand as they are.
Fumble: An additional demand is made.

As Persidius had managed to so cleverly glean from his intrigue at the feast, Cadwy would be well amenable to matching his youngest daughter, Princess Alene, with the Earl's newborn son. Such a match would be to Summerland's advantage, the only son and heir of Roderick wed to the youngest of Cadwy's many daughters with as small a dowry to match. Roderick himself could probably complain little, a princess is a princess (and of faerie stock, to boot), and both realms would be held from further conflict by the bonds of kinship for a generation at least. The betrothal would be worth the automatic removal of two demands. Eliver may propose it at any point during the negotiations, immediately or kept in his back pocket as a last resort, or may never suggest it if he so desires.

Leiryn barely even remembers agreeing to come along, but in no time at all, he finds himself riding out to the nearby wood with Avice, accompanied only by her maid and the castle's mews-keeper, Hebog. Once they find themselves in a suitable spot, the birds take flight and the games begin in earnest.

Ever since that damned lizard brought him so close to death's door, Leiryn has felt bizarrely... light. He can recall a few puzzling flashes of whatever visions he had as he drifted in and out of reality, but trying to summon the whole picture proves futile for him. Yet after waking for good in the bathhouse, with Avice's face so close to his own, he's found himself so rejuvenated and positive that he almost worries he must still be dreaming. It is an indescribably strange feeling, being able to casually converse -- even flirt, somehow -- with someone he's only just met. He almost feels like a weight has been shifted from his shoulders, not quite lifted away entirely, but displaced enough to let him stretch a bit.

As the hours tick by and the hawking progresses, the two of them are closely matched, exchanging tender looks and smiles so regularly that he's almost embarrassed for their chaperones. In his haze of newfound confidence, he manages to get out a few flirtatious remarks every so often, some romantic and others baldly suggestive; almost all of them are surely awful, but the princess blushes and responds in kind all the same. So unlike his mistress, this Avice -- not least in appearance -- yet beneath her warmth and elegance, he senses steel. It may not be the same kind of steel Arcadia wore for all to see, but he can't help but be drawn to it. She feels like someone he can be himself around, in spite of everything. Maybe, after gently brushing off her remark about the demon last night, he'll even let her in on his secret. Maybe.

As evening settles in, Avice exchanges her hawk for an owl -- case in point, a very unusual choice he wouldn't expect from a noblewoman. Despite her newfound advantage, he's skilled enough in the art of falconry to just about keep the pace, and the outing ends with them complimenting each other's abilities almost in unison. And then, before he knows it, he's planted a gentlemanly kiss on her outstretched hand.

The burden lifts ever so slightly further.

Waking up late in a castle is rather nice after the last few days. Seeing Eliver make preparations to negotiate, not so much >.> but he's the Captain and they need to look united in front of these strange people. Plus, one should support their friend!

Sir Alcias visits them after they wake up, and Terrwyn smiles when Leiryn agrees in a small voice. He could stand to be a little less grumpy, and a girl is perfect for curing that. Her grin fades when the dwarf turns to her and presents Sir Jordanus' ring. Does the dunderhead think she's playing hard to get? She only flirted to know if he had any useful information which she could use to help Eliver. But alas, behind that mysterious and aloof nature, there's nothing of substance. Typical emos. Well, if he still doesn't get it after last night's silence... she will play hard to get, alright. (It's just a social experiment, brother!)

"Does he think he can win me over with a simple ring after his rather crass offer last night? I may not be a Lady, 'tis true, but I still have my knightly pride and honour," she retorts. "Tell him I do not care for a quick toss in the bed. Tell him I do not care for material gifts. I only care for true love." Terrwyn places the ring back in the dwarf's palm, looking into his eyes intently. "Please, let him know his affections would be more welcome if he would only express them in a nobler way."

She winks at Miles and El as the Chamberlain leaves. Miles guffaws.

Time to Anne Boleyn it up in here!

After lunch, the group splits. Leiryn goes to the stables, Miliver to the Solar, and who knows what the Roman couple is up to. Terrwyn drifts towards the courtyard. Sir Brastias is talking at a few knights with some expression. A riding race! Her Huw is a monster of a horse. Pity the stableboy in charge of him. "Let me be the first name on your list, Sir! The other riders better watch out for Sir Terrwyn of Larksnest! That's two Rs, yeah."

Hoots and hollers make her head turn. Hm? Terrwyn walks over and cranes her neck over the gathered crowd. The king's daughter and the Pictish princess duelling, and shirtless! Terrwyn's eyes dance as she watches the fight on her toes. She needs to get in on this. Jostling and shoving the men aside, she enters the centre. "What a glorious display! Mind if I join in, ladies?" She ties her hair up, and gathering some courage, undoes her belt and takes off her tunic. Oh gods. The world can see her boobs. Terrwyn gulps and flashes a winning smile (famous feature FTW!) at the hyped up crowd.

Princess Uradech retreats as Sir Terrwyn and the serious-looking Princess Angharad face off. The young girl has a slight build but she expertly grips her sword. Even as Terrwyn swings at her, Angharad deflects and pushing her back with her shield, slices her opponent's sword-arm open which throws her off-balance. Terrwyn drops her sword from the pain. Angharad raises her sword, and the crowd goes wild.

Terrwyn sits up and clutches her bleeding forearm. Why is everyone dancing? Woooah. Wait, a lady is talking to her. Wait, it's Adwen. Wait, when did - crap, did she see the spectacle? Oh no, she won't think she's "a capable knight without whom the group is lost" anymore :( Huh, is she saying something?

"-ight, dear sir! Sir?"

"Wuh- yes." Terrwyn shakes her head and gets to her feet. Fuck that nonsense. She's awesome, okay! "Adwen, do you have a handkerchief? No, don't bother cleaning - afterwards!"

Adwen wraps and ties her handkerchief over Terrwyn's arm tightly. The knight flexes her wrist. Ow. At least the blood is getting soaked. "You're the best! Now watch me!

"Let's go, round two!" (Reckless check FTW!)

The cheering people look back in confusion at the yelling, half-dead woman.

"I said, let's go!" Oh wait, manners. "Uh, your Highness!"

Angharad shrugs, and exchanges her position with the Pictish princess. Uradech charges in with her spear, and Terrwyn dodges it with ease. She slashes at the woman's upper arm, dealing a minor wound. Fuck yeah! Whooo's the winnnneeer nooow!

"You are," Adwen laughs as she deals with Terrwyn's wound a little later, in the shade of the courtyard. Oops. Terrwyn remains quiet while the lady cleans and bandages her wound. "You should go wash up."

"Are you coming?" Terrwyn's eyes light up.

"I'm sorry, I can't."

"Aw. Alright, have fun. And thank you!" Terrwyn kisses her hand.

Terrwyn meets Uradech at the door to the baths. They smile at each other before proceeding in.

Re: [Pendragon RP] 489 Adventure - "Always Salisbury"

Postby Cpt._Funkotron » Sat Sep 07, 2019 11:26 pm

After several hours of haggling, Eliver has managed to get Cadwy to concede his demand for Westfort Hundred.

Persidius stays in the tower, talking to the servants and learning more of the castle's defenses.

Sir Jordanus can be seen observing Terwynn's naked duel with his mouth hanging open. Sir Brastias, standing next to him with his arms folded, less impressed by the display, does the younger knight the favor of closing it for him, and then slapping him up the back of the head to return him to his senses.

As Adwen approaches the tower called 'the bear tower', she sees that there's a kind of ditch around it in the courtyard, with a wooden board spanning it like a bridge. There are small wooden stakes in the ditch. Just as she is two steps across, she hear's a voice cry "Stop!" and a firm hand on her upper arm, holding her in place. "That is not the way, my lady" says a bearded middle-aged commoner. "They must be told that you are coming in peace, or they will take you for an intruder and surely devour you. I am Ors, the steward of the Bear Tower. If you will wait but a moment, I will make the arrangements for your safe crossing."

Adwen smiles at the man, looking contrite. "Thank you, Ors, if you could, please."

The steward assembles a small staff around him, including a drummer boy, two serving wenches carrying buckets of salmon, raw venison, and honey hanging from shoulder-yolks, and Hurtyn, the half-giant fool, clad from high shaggy head to huge bare toe in motleyed rags, with bells hanging all about. The drummer starts to beat his drum, and the fool starts dancing about while playing a flute, the bells jingling as he does, and Ors the steward bangs his staff on the wooden bridge six times, and they cross in a procession. He opens the door, and the file into the dark of the tower. There are no candles burning inside, the sole sources of iillumination are the open door, and an arrow slit on the far side of the room. The smell is awful, worse than a kennel. The serving wenches deposit theiir delivieries and leave, the fool, the drummer boy, and the steward remain with Adwen. Out of the shadows, huge black shapes start to move, matched with three pairs of glowing red eyes.
"Try not to make any sudden movements" says Ors to Adwen.
The shapes start pawing into the buckets and eating from them. A voice comes from the directiion of one of the huge black bears, for that is what they are, asking "Who is this new one?". The voice sounds strange, guttural, harsh, and not quite human.

Adwen is nervous, of course, but feels silly she didn't assume there would be actual bears in bear tower. She looks to Ors, wondering if she should respond.

He nods and cocks his head towards the bear as if to say 'well go ahead and answer'.

Taking a deep breath, Adwen speaks. "I am Lady Adwen, and who do I have the pleasure of addressing?"

"As a cub" says the voice, taking a pause to guzzle down a fish "I was called Erebos. Since I have come to these shores, I have taken the name of Barbara. These are my own cubs, Joseph and Theodora." Adwen can just about discern that the voice addressing her sounds vaguely female.

A smile comes to Adwen's face as she listens. "Ah, so you are a mother? My own children give me joy like no other."

"She smells like the other woman, the one who stuck me!" says one of the cubs, really a large adolescent, and only made to look small next to his mother. He starts padding towards her in the darkness, before Barbara's jaw clamps on the scruff of his neck and hauls him back harmlessly. "She smells nothing of the sort, and I've raised you better than to attack a guest" scolds the mother. "She does too!" protests Joseph. "Don't contradict me! The ability to speak does not make you intelligent, now behave yourself or you're off the honey for a week". The large red eyes of the mother turn to face Adwen. "I'm sorry lady, the scent of magic is easy to confuse in young snouts, and all you two-legs look alike to us."
Joseph roars like a normal bear and pads off into the corner to slouch.

Adwen looks mortified for a moment, having zero experience with talking bears that she could remember. "You have no need to apologize, I can see how a mistake could be made."

"That's kind of you. My son never knew his father, my mate. He was killed by two-legs a few years ago, defending the woods the King had granted him. It is the way of things, of course. But to make matters worse, just this last winter, a strange woman two-leg coaxed Joseph out of his slumber with a song, and into a trap where she stuck him with a knife and took some of his blood away."

"I am so, incredibly sorry you have had to deal with all of that," Adwen responded, wondering what witch needed bear blood. "Has the Lord been treating you well?"

"Mavros was a warrior, and he died a warrior's death, as he would have wanted it. I understand he took several dozen poachers with him before he was slain; a fine legacy for his children. It is only a shame the cubs could never have met him, and that we have now nothing to remember him by since his bones were buried and his hide was taken, but I suppose it can't be helped. King Cadwy has done by us honorably, although he is not able to protect us from sorcery as he once did, so we are not as often out in the woods to hunt and roam for ourselves as we once were, but we are well fed and sheltered, and my cubs grow stronger by the day. Soon they will have cubs of their own. That is why Mavros journeyed here from Thule, for bears are nearly died out in these lands, it is Cadwy's wish to replenish our race in the woods of these islands."

"I do hope King Cadwy is able to help replenish your ranks," Adwen murmurs, interested in what the bears were capable of.

"And blessing upon your house also, madam" says Barbara before sticking her snout into the honey bucket.
"If that's quite all madam...?" says Ors the steward.

Adwen gives a slight curtsey. "Yes, thank you for this."

"Any time milady...any time that is, with time in advance of course" he says, escorting her back across the bridge and into the courtyard, where Terwynn had just been wounded in a topless duel with Princess Angherad. (Cut to that part of Terwynn's post)

***

The next day, Eliver is again bid to meet King Cadwy in the Solar that afternoon.

Today is the day of Sir Brastias' horse-race. He has gotten Queen Melwaise, Princess Angherad, Sir Terwynn, Sir Elinor, and Sir Ubo to agree to the contest, and pony up the entry fee of £1 to participate, the proceeds of which to be won by the victor.

Sir Alcias once again informs Sir Leiryn that Princess Avice is desiring of his company, to go bow-hunting some deer.

Sir Jordanus can be seen walking alone along the parapets, with a lovesick look in his eyes.

The shock Leiryn feels when he hears of Adwen's discovery fades quickly; at this point, he ought to have expected that the monstrous bear would have a talking wife and children. It does not escape him that wearing Mavros's hide around the rest of the family would be a very bad idea, so he carefully hides his cloak among the rest of his belongings. Some part of him resents them -- that beast killed his father, what right did they have to object? -- but he refrains from the urge to wear it proudly before them. He can feel however he wants toward the wife, but he knows it's unfair to the children.

... Gods, he's measuring ill will towards bear cubs. What a world.

***

The next day, Leiryn finds himself once more in the midst of the forest with Avice, this time doing something he's much more accustomed to: wielding his bow, ready to fell his chosen enemy. Except now the "enemy" is hopefully nothing more than a few deer.

Together with the princess (who wields her own bow with a confidence that makes him a little weak in the knees) and with the cub Theodora as their bloodhound, he searches around for suitable tracks. It isn't long before he spots some that look promising, but just before he is about to call Avice over, he notes that these aren't the tracks of a deer or anything like it -- they're those of a boar. Even with all that he has faced down in his life, from bloodthirsty Saxons to mind-boggling magical beasts, he knows better than to chase after a wild pig without a spear. Vile little bastards, all muscle and teeth and trouser-soiling ferocity. He'd almost rather face a wyvern again than hunt a boar at range; at least wyverns had some sense of sport.

Hours pass.

The hunt continues unsuccessfully and uneventfully, though he enjoys Avice's company -- and, admittedly, the novelty of being around a talking bear -- all the same. Twice they encounter recognizable deer tracks, twice Theodora picks up the scent, and twice the deer are lost all the same. Little conversation is had, partly to avoid alerting their quarry, partly to keep his well of flirtation from running dry. The woods stretch for so long, one ought to expect more wildlife, but- ah, there, finally. Another set of tracks, fresher than the last few, and...

Boar again.

Leiryn sighs and looks to the dimming sky; the day will draw to a close soon enough, and he'd hate to return with Avice disappointed (and without getting a chance to show off his archery skills). "To hell with it," he mutters, and signals his companions to follow the trail.

The pursuit takes quite a while even with the bear's abilities, and Avice eventually offers to take the lead until they have their target cornered, which Leiryn has no objection to. Eventually, though, they spot the thing: a large, coarse-furred ball of latent fury tipped with yellowing tusks. Taking some small comfort in the fact that boars in this land are just as repellent as the ones back home, he stands firm and aims, letting a shot fly only when he's sure it isn't already charging at them.

The arrow sinks into the boar's haunch, but if it is at all inhibited by the wound, it doesn't show it beyond an angry, rumbling snort. Leiryn nocks another arrow as quickly as he can as the creature moves to attack, and mercifully, its single-minded charge enables him to line up a perfect shot, which sinks into its gnarled head almost perfectly. Little more than a second later, Avice lets her own shot off and matches his success perfectly, the two arrows now snug together in the boar's brain in such a way that would instantly fell any other animal. But of course, the boar's rush continues, and he has barely enough time to drop his bow and bring up his sword before it is on the both of them. At the last second, he manages to step in front of Avice and take a defensive stance just as the beast collides with his blade, and after a few blurred moments of flailing movements and increasingly sluggish lunges, the boar finally lets out a deep wheeze and collapses.

It takes a few moments to collect himself, but Leiryn wastes no time checking Avice and then himself for any minor injuries from the scuffle. When that's done, he can't help but let out a cheerful cry, making the princess giggle. They have no protests when Theodora saunters up, claims the meat by virtue of it doing most of the tracking, and starts to sink its teeth into the bloody mess; instead, Avice takes Leiryn's hand and encourages him to walk with her down to the nearby stream. After all of that, a relaxing walk would be nice.

***

As they approach the stream, they start to hear something odd: the distant baying of hounds, accompanied shortly by the sounds of a huge creature moving around. Nothing comes into views, however, until the noise suddenly stops, at which point the creature appears by the stream a short distance away. It's a fantastical thing, with the head and neck of a snake, the body of a leopard, and a lion's flanks connected to the feet of a hart. However it was emitting that noise, it appears to have stopped for the sake of a drink, craning its neck down to reach the water.

Leiryn recognizes it, of course: the famed Questing Beast Glatisant, known as a master of evasion capable of outfoxing any pursuer, but not naturally aggressive despite the constant hunting. Curiosity and bravado gets the better of him, and he manages to creep over to the beast just barely close enough to touch it; as soon as he does, it springs up and dashes into the woods, disappearing as quickly as it came. Now, though, he hears the loud hoofbeats of an approaching horse about to race out of the brush -- and Avice is directly in its path. With all of his remaining energy, he tugs her away so hard that they end up tumbling over each other, landing him on top of her.

After a few silent moments of held stares and flushed expressions, Leiryn rights himself and helps her up. They were nearly crushed by a knight on a majestic courser, with symbols he can't recognize adorning his person; despite Leiryn's bafflement, Avice whispers that he is likely part of the de Galis clan, rulers in the north of Cambria. The knight, oblivious or uncaring to the fact that he nearly killed them, calls out - "Have you seen Glatistant, a large peculiar animal, pass by here?"

Leiryn glares and, recalling which way the beast disappeared to, points in the opposite direction. The knight doesn't seem to notice anything amiss.

"Who are you, sir?" Avice asks, ever the kind soul.

"A knight of excellence, m'lady!" The man replies, before turning and -- with a dramatic "hya!" -- charging off to what Leiryn hopes is a long and fruitless search.

***

As the sun sets, Leiryn drops his princess -- the princess, not his princess, what's he thinking -- off at the drawbridge to the inner ward. Avice's maid is there to meet them, and Avice gives him a kiss on the cheek before leaving for her quarters. Once the maid sees her off, she turns to him and gives him a once-over, barely concealing a glare.

"You look like you could use a bath," she says. "And might I recommend the colder end of the bathhouse?"

After a hard day's dickering, Eliver manages to get Cadwy to relinquish his claim on Wheelwell Hundred. Afterwards, he returns the bear-fur cloak to the family.

Terwynn meanwhile prepares for the horse race. All the contestants are gathered by the stables, save Queen Melwaise who arrives late. She comes striding down the courtyard in her diding clothes, talking with a man in simple traveling clothes, with curly dark hair and a young mustache.
"And send the Duchess my love" says the Queen.
"I shall, my lady" says the man.
They walk into the stables, the queen taking her racing mount, the messenger bringing out a grey nag.
"Where are you going so soon? I thought we were to all report back together, our business here is not yet done" asks Sir Brastias of the man.
"I am to bring back correspondence for Lady Igraine, it is a family matter. I'm sure you never much needed my help here anyway" he says.
"You needn't go immediately. Come, will you join in the sport before you ride back to Tintagel? There's a fat purse for the victor" says Sir Brastias.
"It would be better I were away while the sun is up" he says.
"Come, we're only circling the castle thrice. All that time you spend in the saddle, it would be shame if you missed such a display of horsemanship" says Brastias.
"It doesn't take much skill to sit on a mangy packhorse for ten years, Captain" asserts one of the other Cornish Knights to Sir Brastias.
"Don't listen to him, Daisy" mutters the messenger into his horse's ear. "Alright, I'll join your contest" he declares to Sir Brastias "but then I must be straight off".

Much of the castle has come to view the race, massed up around the starting and finishing line. The racetrack is to be the dirt path that rings the castle-hill and connects the road from Bath to Glevum. A pair of servants from the bathhouse have been recruited to wave the starting flags. The participants all line up abreast, on borrowed coursers. At the blast of a trumpet and the waving of the flags, the riders are off. Terwynn gets off to a bad start and never quite recovers. In the second lap, Sir Elinor is thrown from her horse. It isn't long before it is made clear that the race is between the queen and the messenger. They are all but neck and neck until the final yards, where the messenger pulls just a few feet ahead before crossing the finish line. Behind them, the race for third is also very fierce, between Sir Brastias and Princess Angherad. The Princess had fallen behind early, but then rapidly caught up, while Sir Brastias had stayed at a steady pace all three laps, which as the proverb advises, does indeed win him the race, for third place that is. Terwynn then wins fifth by default, by sheer fact of Sir Elinor's fall. The young knight is not badly injured, only bruised in flesh and pride. The messenger does not stay around for the celebrations, he collects his winnings and heads back to the stables, and before long is off on the road atop his shaggy grey nag.

***

On the third day, Eliver is brought up to the keep as usual, and he whittles through the King's demand for the old rights and priveleges of his former lands, and with the suggestion of a betrothal between the Earl's son and the young princess, brings the terms of the peace down to a mere twenty chargers, fair enough recompense for the lives taken.

Queen Melwaise can be seen sparring in the courtyard, in full armor, with three knights at once; Sir Brastias, Sir Ubo, and Sir Elinor, holding them all at bay with her mace.

The Pictish Warriors of Princess Uradech's escort are having a wrestling contest.

It is apparently some sort of market day in the city.

Sir Jordanus rode out of the castle around dawn apparently, he didn't say where he was going.

In a break from the usual pattern, Sir Alcias has no message for Leiryn from Princess Avice. He may almost be given to thinking that she had grown tired of his company, were she not to come around to the tower herself a half hour later, inviting him to view the Castle's Library with her.

Re: [Pendragon RP] 489 Adventure - "Always Salisbury"

Terwynn, Miles, and Persidius take a short trip into the city of Bath to take part in the Market day. Hundreds of pilgrims and cripples have come from miles around to pray at the Cathedral and bathe in the healing springs. A large Marble statue to Sulis stands on the edge of the market by the bathhouse; local custom leads many to leave small clay or wooden tablets with curses marked on them, that the goddess of the springs may vex their enemies. Monks from Glastonbury are meanwhile leading a procession through the streets and singing a latin chant, which Miles tries to join in on but instead squawks in a manner that leads many of the nearby penitent to think he's mocking them. They come across the cart of a traveling smith, with strange weapons on display. Terwynn buys an unusually long sword, a large fierce-looking hammer, and a spiked ball on the end of a chain attached to a wooden handle. Persidius buys himself one of the strange swords.

Once back at the castle, Miles gets into a wrestling match with one of the Picts, called Galam. They start off the match by running into each other head first, brusing each other and falling flat backwards. Once they've recovered from their dazes and the onlookers aren't laughing quite as hard, they resume their match, which Galam wins. They go off to the hall together to share a drink and talk of their peoples. He seems a friendly enough sort.

Leiryn is led by the hand across the interior draw-bridge and into the inner ward by Princess Avice. Strictly speaking, Leiryn isn't suppose to be there. She holds her head up high and acts as if they both have permission to be there, and the guards let them pass without a word. They go not to the ground doorway of the keep, but through the base of the Mews tower, up the stairwell, and across the open parapet. She whispers mischievously as they climb, telling him that she's not supposed to have the keys, but that she stole them from Sir Alcias' chamber, and he'll be stuck in negotiations all day and so won't miss them. They enter the keep, climb the interior stairwell, and come to the door of one of the treasure rooms. Inside, the room sparkles from the dim sliver of sunlight allowed in by the arrow slit, stocked high with chests and shelves filled with coins, jewels, goblets, crowns, instruments, weapons, armor, and all kinds of finery. As Avice fiddles with the lock on the other end of the room for about a minute, Leiryn finds himself sorely tempted to steal something.

Leiryn succeeds Generous. He steals nothing.

They then enter the small library of the castle, really only a little larger than a closet, with only a few bookshelves; still, it is more books in one place than one is likely to find anywhere outside of a wealthy monestary. Avice lights a candle, and picks out a book at random to show Leiryn. She lights a candle, and they sit together to look at it. The binding is fine leather, and the coloring and illuminations of the pages are quite beautiful. It is apparently a book of romantic poetry. Leiryn reads a little, although he is unable to do so without moving his lips and muttering the syllables aloud, often stumbling over longer words or proper nouns. Taking pity on his difficulties, Avice offers to read aloud to him, which he accepts with only a slight bruise to his pride. As she reads, he finds himself being drawn in to the sound of her voice as she reads him the poetry, soothed by it, beckoned by the dark shadows castle by the candle, his body still tired and sore from their adventures the previous day.

Leiryn succeeds Energetic. He does not fall asleep.

As she continues to read the poem softly to him, and he continues to listen to her in rapt attention, their bodies seem to unconsciously attract. As the stanzas descend and the cantos grow heavier, their breaths deepen and their heads begin to drift together; his eyes never leaving her, her own flitting between his and the page as she reads, increasingly slowly. At last, their faces only a few inches apart, and she stops reading in order to devote her eyes entirely to him. After a long pause, he takes the initiative, and kisses her. She kisses him back.

Leiryn fails Chaste, and instead succeeds Lustful.

The kissing grows in earnest, the kissing grows to touching, to falling together to the shadowed floor, to fabric ripping, bodies joining, and breaths heaving.

At some point, he has no concept of how much time has passed (except not nearly much as he'd like), he hears footsteps and voices from a couple of rooms away. He notifies her and they make quick haste to correct their attires before the door to the library swings open and Sir Alcias, Avice's Maid, and two Guards burst in to the room. Leiryn and Avice's hair are of course somewhat out of sorts, and their faces flushed, but the only evidence of their deed uncorrected by the time of their interruption is Leiryn's crooked belt, and the shoulder of Avice's dress that had been ripped, which she covers up with her hand, passing the movement up as a kind of gesture of contrition.

Avice vouches for Leiryn's presence in the keep, taking credit for the idea and having stolen the keys. The dwarf angrily takes them back and orders Leiryn to be thoroughly searched, to make sure he hasn't stolen anything. After that, he is grabbed by the guards, one on each arm, and half-marched, half-dragged, down to the inner drawbridge and given a sharp shove into the outer ward of the castle. Sir Alcias strongly advises that Leiryn stay within his own quarters until he can report to his Captain, Eliver. Across the courtyard, Leiryn makes eye contact with Avice. She has allowed her hand to fall away from the rip in her dress, which her Maid quickly herself notices and covers up, shoving her lady back inside the castle and casting a withering, scolding glare at Leiryn.

At some point during the negotiations, Alcias returns after some time of absense and whispers something into Cadwy's ear. The King informs Eliver that one of his escort was caught violating hospitality, entering a place where he was forbidden to go. This imposes a setback on the tone of the negotiations, that is only rectified once the demand for the £300 in gold to be restored to the treaty.

That evening, Jordanus returns to the castle, bearing a large bundle of wildflowers gathered from a mountain fifteen miles away, intended for Sir Terwynn. He explains that he was delayed in his journey by having to save a young girl from a panther, who he had found chasing her up a tree, slaying the beast and seeing the girl safe home to her parents.

***

The next day, Eliver is summoned along with all the other knights of his escort to the Solar of the castle, where they are to be presented the official draft of the peace terms they are to take back to Sir Roderick. While being presented with the document, they hear the squawking of a great swarm of ravens outside. "Hm. That must be Merlin" says Cadwy, "well go on, show him in" he says to Alcias. In a short moment, the Archdruid stands before them once more. He bows to Cadwy, and nods to Eliver, strolling up to glance down at the document quickly.
"Your men are safe home in Salisbury, and by the looks of things you've got your little spat tied up" he says to Eliver, before turning to Cadwy. "What remains to be seen is the knot of the larger spat; how do you stand resolved with the crown, your highness?"
"The same as I've always done, Merlin, indifferently. He tramples over my affairs and yet has nothing to offer me that I actually want" says the King.
"He has offered you lands" says Merlin.
"My lads are here, as they have always been; from the marshes of Avalon to the dales of Gloom. I am desirous of no others."
"No, of course not" says Merlin. "But those marshes have not been quite your own of late, have they?"
King Cadwy considers his words and their implications for a moment, and then says "I sense a proposition."
"And he says he hasn't got the sight" says Merlin jokingly as an aside to the others. "I propose that one favor deserves another; I arrange to have the Water-Leapers slain, you swear on your grandmother's spigot not to rebel against King Uther".
King Cadwy nods thoughtfully. "You might have a bargain. But how will you go about it?"
"Oh, it is quite simple really; all it requires is a couple boats, a few weapons, and brave knights of stern enough stuff to use them; it just so happens I know a few of the sort". He looks around the room with a smirk on his lips and a gleam in his eye.

The third day of negotiations

Eliver returns to their quarters in the tower that evening looking slightly dispirited.

"It was going a little better than I'd counted on, overall," he says. "And a good thing too, as there was something of a setback late in the day. I gather at least one of you knows about that."

Ah right, the IC justification! Time for Lads' famous BS roleplaying!

Terrwyn shuffles her feet and looks down as Sir Jordanus tells his tale in front of the court. You gotta be kidding her.

The man was supposed to get sad but quit when he knew he wasn't going to bed her right away. You know, like a man does. Right? He wasn't supposed to go on a quest, and succeed it too! And save a child! What's next, conquer Ireland?

Why does this keep happening to her? It's definitely not her fault or anything. This guy is just nuts. Simply nuts... over her. That feels kind of nice, actually. When was the last time any person actually wanted her beyond her pussy? The Frankish princess? That relationship's just plain unfeasible, yo :'(

Some of the listeners are glancing at her. Oh crap. She's going to look like a real bitch in front of like, fifty people, at the end of this. Unless...?

She definitely doesn't like men in that way! But... you know. At least the guy seems sincere, and okay, a little adorable. She could use some support after the uh, unfortunate social situation back home (that was in no way her doing, what? <_<) Cornwall will definitely be luckier than Salisbury has been for her. But what about her friends? And the Earl? Darn. Well, she can always write to her friends, and her boss took her kids away from her. So uh, fuck him. (That feels so wrong to say! {{Rod}}) Plus, she has only ever heard good things about the Duke, no matter what a smelly old wizard says. And King U's a regular asshole. But maybe if peace can be made, or Gorlois wins the war, she can- :D

"-Sir Terrwyn?"

Ugh. Don't interrupt her treasonous reverie. Terrwyn gets up and smiles warmly.

"You didn't need to do all of that, Sir." Really! You didn't! Now you have put me in a horrible spot! "A simple profession of love would have sufficed, as I said at the start." Really! Then I could have just rejected you instead of thinking of drastically changing my life! Whatevs. "But I'm glad to have proof of your courage and kindness. And I am glad even more, for that little girl." <3

Merlin's declaration disquiets Terrwyn. If Summerland makes nice with King Uther... but then the magic man questions the knights' bravery, and you know what, fuck you dude.

"I'm in!"

Terrwyn takes Jordanus' hands in hers. "I'm going to go deal with the water leapers, okay? It is just my last service as a way of saying thanks. Don't you dare leave until I come back!"

Hi Funk Im cashing in on your offer Please and thanks

Re: [Pendragon RP] 489 Adventure - "Always Salisbury"

Things are beginning to go well for once. Eliver has achieved peace, Leiryn seems to be getting on well with the princess and even Terrwyn is in a good mood.

Persidius, by contrast, is in a dark mood and when Merlin implies the Salisbury knights will solve Cadwy's problem with these water leapers, whatever they are, his face twists in disgust.

"Let us show the witch-king what true knights are capable of. Had he a decent one surely this would be solved already!"

He is met at first with silent disbelief. 'Witch' is hardly a polite term for a magician, and to give offence to ones host is uncouth in the best of times. For someone as mannered and cultured as Persidius is entirely unheard of and unacceptable to the king's court.

"That is a wild boast, sir. You lack a knight's humility!" roars Sir Bubo the Marshall at Persidius, while Eliver sighs in frustration and Miles stares daggers into Persidius's side.

"We keep him around for his sword-arm, not for his tact," Eliver tries to brush it off with his usual humour, but it is too late.

"Well we shan't keep him any longer." says Cadwy. "I am over four hundred years old, and I've never once abided such rudeness in my own castle. You have your quest, and your task here is complete" he says, rolling up the peace accord and handing it to Alcias for the seal. "Begone from my house, for you shall not be welcomed as a guest again hereafter, Sir Persidius."

"I am sorry," Eliver tries once more to calm the situation and looks meaningfully at Persidius.

In his own mind Persidius is incensed, blind to the depth of his insult, and ever more wroth at the godless wizard for speaking so quickly that there was no time to answer Sir Bubo before he found himself cast out. Under usual circumstances, even at such an insult, Persidius would at least attempt to recant and to forgive. Or at least say something that could be seen as an apology.

But this adventure has ignited a spark within the Roman knight that cannot be kept from kindling ever brighter. before he disdained magicians but thought little of their tricks and malfeasance, but now... now he couldn't turn away as they plied their reckless schemes on the realm. The presumption of them both, Cadwy and the Archdruid as well!

"Well I don't mean to let such a slight upon your house and upon your knights go unanswered!" says Sir Bubo to his king. He pulls off his glove and throws it to the floor of the Solar. "I challenge you to a test of arms, Roman!"

Eliver suppresses a groan. Killing Cadwy's marshall is the last thing they need, even if the terms are signed already, and about to be sealed and handed over.

King Cadwy sits back in his chair, mildly amused. Sir Alcias seals the document, unperturbed. All eyes are on Persidius to see his answer.

Persidius couldn't stand it any longer and so his tongue lashed again, "This land is a godforsaken place, infested with monsters who have slain your lord's vassal and yet no one has raised a sword against them. You are no knight at all, but I will answer your challenge all the same."

"You've done more than enough harm, Sir Persidius!" Miles barks with a glare.

Lady Adwen merely watches, keeping her own counsel behind her inscrutable gaze.

Sir Bubo gives no time, enraged as he is, "Enough wagging of your vile tongue, let your sword do the talking!" Before long, they are out in the courtyard, squaring off for a duel...

*****************************

Sir Bubo is skilled with the sword and invigorated despite his years by his righteousness of purpose.

Sir Persidius, still filled with bile faces off with the older knight, but cannot focus his anger into effort. His olive cheeks are reddened and his eyes are hard as stones, but he feels naught but disdain for the man before him. He thirsts for the blood of the witch-king though that is not possible.

Bubo moves to strike first. His footwork is good, his shield held forward and his sword armed coiled like a serpent. He does nothing wrong, he makes no mistakes... but he is no match for Persidius and in a flash of steel the Roman knight turns a parry into a downward thrust and drive his point just about he enemy's knee and sends the Summerland knight crashing to the earth.

Wounded and prone,a river of red spilling from his injured leg, Sir Bubo rolls to come to his feet. He brings up his shield to ward himself in a classic, rising guard. Persidius steps into him, twists Bubo's sword out of line and rams their shields together before burying his own blade a hand deep in the Marshall's collar.

The violence of the exchange sends Sir Bubo back to the ground. Sir Persidius raises his sword once more and steps forward in case the other knight once more tries to rise up and continue. He does not, and the Roman swordmaster stays there a long moment, his bloodied blade still ready.

He can't hear what the other nobles nearby are saying, his helmet dulls his hearing and his mind is still focused on Cadwy. That last part is perhaps why he does turn toward the king when the ancient magician speaks to ransom the marshall's life.

"Have it," Persidius says flatly, "I will have nothing from you or your servants that is not seized from a corpse." He steps back, bloody sword still in hand, and wishes he could stride the few paces to the witch and run him through. But he cannot so instead he inverts his sword and raises it high,

"I swear by The Cross that this is the last time a Summerland knight meets my blade and lives!"

The duel finished, Persidius leaves the castle, saying nothing until they are far away.

Re: [Pendragon RP] 489 Adventure - "Always Salisbury"

Just before they leave the castle, Merlin advises the knights to take off their armor before they go out to confront the water-leapers; they are cunning and wicked beasts who most usually kill by drowning. Their armor could very well be the death of them if it joins them in the water. The next day, they arrive at the marshes near Wells, where the water-leapers were last spotted. A local fisherman loans them two row-boats, each with the capacity to fit up to three knights each. Once out into the water, it isn't long before the water before them starts to ripple. Suddenly, four large green winged shapes burst out of the water and leap at the boat with Persidius and Terwynn.

Terwynn strikes one in the gaping jaw as it flies past her, the other grips onto her arm with its teeth and almost pulls her overboard. Persidius dispatches one leaper as it breaks the surface with a judicious chop, cleaving the horrdi winged tadpole in twain; the other he stabs grievously although not mortally.

The surviving water-leapers, including an additional one that had been lurking beneath the marsh, switch tack and leap at the boat of three instead. Eliver managed to stab one of them, another's teeth scrape harmlessly across his shield as it flies past. Leiryn and Miles, and the water-leapers assailing them, all fail to strike their targets, Miles going so far as to drop Terwynn's antique sword into the marsh.

Sensing this new weakness, two of the Water-leapers then gang up on Miles, who scrambles to bring up a new spear to resist them. One of them he manages to stab, the other bites him in the shoulder but fails to drag him into the water. Leiryn has his forearm bitten which causes him to drop his sword. Eliver kills the Leaper coming at him.

Leiryn fumbles for his bow, and manages to loose off an arrow at the horid beast as it flies at him, but it doesn't hurt the thing nearly enough; it's teeth sink into him, and he is dragged unconscious into the water. Eliver and Miles each kill another Leaper.

As Leiryn falls into the water, he cannot avoid but inhale a small amount of water, beginning to drown. Eliver, seeing the fate of his friend and fellow, is struck catatonic, unable to rouse himself in any course. Terwynn watches helpless and disheartened. Miles, inspired by his loyalty to his friend, takes up the oars and begins rowing like a demon to bring the little boat in range to save him. Persidius, likewise inspired, dives head first into the water to retrieve him. Persidius grabs ahold of Leiryn's motionless body, kicks it above water, and with a series of mad strokes with his free hand, chops the last water leaper into pieces. He swims Leiryn over to the boat which Miles has just piloted near them, and they heave him aboard. They row him to the shore, where Adwen is waiting. She has to beat his chest and perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to get him breathing again, but before too long Leiryn lurches upwards and coughs up the murky mash water and begins heaving in breaths of blessed air.

That night, they return to Caer Sulis, all except for Persidius of course, who finds lodgings for himself in the city. Leiryn is taken off to the bath-house again, where he is brought to full health again by morning. An hour past sunrise, King Cadwy receives the knights in his hall, and hears their report. Sir Ubo is standing beside him, as fit as a fiddle. Merlin stands nearby. King Cadwy recieves their report cheerfully, and announces to Merlin that his boon is granted. Summerland shall remain loyal to King Uther. At a wave of his hand, Queen Melwaise enters the hall escorting Princess Avice, who runs to Leiryn to kiss and embrace him without any thought to courtly decorum. King Cadwy laughs and says "Sir Leiryn, it would be agreeable to me, and evidently agreeable to her, that you take my daughter Princess Avice to wife. Now that peace reigns complete between our lands, I can think of no compunction. What say you, my young friend?" Of course Leiryn agrees emphatically. "When shall we wed, Papa?" asks Avice eagerly. "Don't be so hasty" says the four hundred year old man "the stars are not in position for this wedding, and shan't be until one year, one month, one week, and one day from today. I have seen them myself, and I am quite certain my calculations are precise". After that, the nuts and bolts of the betrothal are worked out; it seems the Cadwy and Melwaise have agreed to disagree about the nature of dowry and brideprice, and so as a compromise for this match, Avice shall command a brideprice of 500 pounds of silver, AND carry a dowry of five manors. "How does the title 'Baron Hartcliffe' suit you?" asks Cadwy. Once that joyous business is concluded, Cadwy summons in the Cornish and Pictish delagation, and instructs them to bear a negative answer to their respective liege-lords, and asks them to make ready to depart his lands the following morning.

Leiryn and Avice's betrothal ceremony is held at sunset, in a standing circle in the woods not far from the castle. Persidius is invited. King Cadwy is brought in a sedan chair. Sir Brastias, Sir Jordanus, and Princess Uradech come to give their well-wishings. Cadwy and Melwaise hand over the future bride, and it is Eliver's privelege as the Earl's representative here, to hand over the future groom. Merlin offciates the pagan blessings and rituals, and it is he who joins their hands together. Leiryn and Avice swear vows as to the marital agreement that will be executed on the day of the wedding (the dowry and the brideprice etc.), and conclude the ceremony by exchanging rings and one further vow each, "with this ring, I do vow to wed thee", and seal the pact with a kiss.

The next morning, as the Cornish are departing, Sir Eliver pays Sir Urswn's old minstrel a shilling to sing "The Bastard King of Cornwall", but replace the 'king' with 'duke', to make it about Gorlois.

***

Adwen dreams of the same tune that night. She sees a middle-aged man, with a beard, wearing a crown, sitting at a table under a tree, eating a roast chicken. He hums the tune of 'bastard king of cornwall' and admits "I'll give them that, it's a catchy tune". A lute is lying in splinters on the ground. Above, a jongleur is being hanged from the tree. A dark-haired boy is nearby, clutching his nurse-maid's skirts and clamping his eyes shut. "Look here, Mark!" barks the King at the boy. He points at the twitching jongleur. "That is what it means to be a King!"

Thus concludes the Adventure of 489 AD - "Always Salisbury". If you would like to reserve your place for the Adventure of 490, in which Uther Pendragon marches against the Duke of Cornwall, reply below.

Epilogue

The knights ride back to Sarum to report to their lord. Sir Roderick sits atop his throne with his sword-arm in a sling, but otherwise in good health. He congratulates, praises, and thanks the knights for their exemplary service, and takes it in turn to reward them all.

Sir Eliver, Captain of the Forty Knights, is raised Castellan of Tilshead, the post which up to now had been vacant since the death of Lord Hywel.
Sir Miles, he grants the wardship of Lady Ella, Sir Hywel's orphan and heiress, until such a time as she is wed, although Roderick does not also grant Miles the right to decide her husband. This includes of course the stewardship of her lands for the next several years; a full three manors, for at least the next seven years until the maiden is marriageable.
Sir Persidius, he grants the formal Hundred Rights of Bran's Hill Hundred, which until now had been the only piece of the mastery of that land which Persidius and Adwen had not possessed between them.
Sir Leiryn, he enfoeffs and grants in perpetuity the Manor of Winterbourne, which had been Arcadia's before her death and it's reversion back to the Earl. He also grants Leiryn the guardianship if his brother-in-law's manor of Barleyfield, and his sister's manor of Imber, or what is left of it. The Earl has not yet given Bleddyn or his family up for dead, and so this grant is given in the spirit that it should only be temporary.
Sir Terwynn, he returns the custody of her children, and gives her his blessing to renounce her oath, give the Manor of Larksnest to her sister Diane, and depart his lands to marry Sir Jordanus.

Before Merlin leaves, he takes an odd interest in the tapestries in the hall, but won't explain why.

The Earl's son and heir is at last Christened with the name 'Robert'.
