Things that are things.

Discussion, in general

I want to learn to play TTRPGs (like, D&D or Pathfinder or something) and my therapist thinks it would be a good idea if went out and tried to meet new people. The logical solution to both these things is to join this gaming group I found on Meetup.com. Unfortunately my anxiety keeps reminding me that both gaming and meetups involve interacting with other humans. So that's how that's going.

On a totally unrelated note...

For some reason this just reminded me of this dude's tweet:

Hey, I did that! Very hard to go along the first time but I managed it and it's one of the best things I've done in recent years. I have so much fun, and it's actually pretty good to get some voluntary IRL social interaction on a regular basis. Stops me becoming a recluse.

But it's D&D so it's presumed you're not a social butterfly, and in all likelihood you won't be the most awkward person there. Also, YMMV but sometimes it helps to be in-character so you're not acting as yourself.

It'll be terrifying the first time you go, but if you can bite the bullet you're probably not going to regret it. Good luck!

Honestly, I'd find being in character more difficult than being myself. Honestly, my reasons for never doing roleplaying games, in addition to the fear of social awkwardness, is that I don't think I'd enjoy it unless I were dungeon master. Roleplaying has never really appealed much to me, but worldbuilding, that's something I love. But I've never tried it because I don't have a group of friends who are interested, and doubt strangers would be interested in playing with a novice DM.

On another note, I have apparently lost enough weight that if a plane is mostly or completely full, the middle seat next to me is no longer the very last seat filled. I guess this is a good thing, but on the first leg of my flight out, my seatbelt buckled. My other three flights the seatbelts didn't buckle, and I realized it must just be a different model of seats. So I'm still smarting over the fact that I haven't lost enough weight to buckle normal airplane seatbelts again after all, and this feels like a very disappointing consolation prize.

Are you telling me you aren't already roleplaying as a character on TCS?

Yah. The only character I can play is, as the Windy One suggests, the one I am playing right now (ie a grown ass adult who has the faintest idea how interpersonal interaction works, and doesn't have an irresistible compulsion to touch plants).

Also, some further digging into Denver's gaming scene lead me to discover that there are is a whole entire meetup dedicated to people who want to take up D&D for mental-health-related reasons.

I love America sometimes.

He made all the girls blush and sigh.

Contrary to what your propagandists would have us believe, one can love both America and communism.

Well, in America you can. In Canada, I think loving America is legally treason.

Carrol creeps on kids.
Lewis would lose it.

A pnemonic for figuring out who was which, by their attitude towards kids.

CS Lewis didn't really like kids.

UPDATE: I bit the bullet, and I'm going to gaming night on Tuesday, and so now I'm having anxiety that I'm doing character creation wrong and the other kids will laugh at me, instead.

I'm sure you're doing fine, but I suspect no amount of assurances will put paid to your anxiety.

Would it help at all if someone who's played a few TTRPGs cast an eye over what you've done before you go? I'm more than happy to do so if you would like. (I've played D&D 5th edition quite a bit now, and a few other games a little.)

Regrettably, this is indeed how anxiety works. It's always worse where something creative I've done is involved.

Despite my lizard brain screaming continuously ate the idea of showing my character to another actual human (I realize this is literally the whole point of D&D), that would probably be a good idea, thanks.

If anybody else wants to point and laugh or whatever:

Despite looking completely different than the D&D I'm used to. You used D&D Beyond so I can't see that you screwed up anywhere. Or wouldn't the program have picked it up?
