Why do I have a feeling that it bears a reputation and condition similar to any Country referred to as a "People's Democratic Republic"?

A grandson of Giuseppe Garibaldi who shared his name fought in the early stages of the Mexican revolution as one of Francisco I. Madero's lieutenants.

After getting on the bad side of Pancho Villa over who should get credit for a battle in Juarez, Garibaldi did the only smart thing someone in that position could do and GTFOd, before things turned really ugly. Unlike most of the heroes of the revolution against Diaz, Garibaldi lived long enough to fight in world war I, oppose Mussolini during world war II, and die at the ripe old age of 70.

There's a square in Mexico city famous for being the traditional spot for mariachi bands to gather. It's called "Plaza Garibaldi", and I always assumed it was named after the famous Italian reunification leader, but it was actually named after his grandson because of his war efforts.

Honda doesn't have any traditional audio speakers in the HondaJet.

It uses multiple transducers embedded in the walls instead.

Y'all know how Kinder Surprise eggs are banned in the US because the FDA considers them a choking hazard?

Well, about a year ago, Chile followed suit, but for very different reasons. Chile is looking to restrict the marketing and sale of junk foods to children, including banning their sale in schools and prohibiting things that appeal to children like cute mascots and toys.

Now, I have some complaints about how they define junk food (it includes saturated fat and salt in addition to sugar), and as a libertarian this rubs me the wrong way. But since high-sugar foods are the main ones marketed this way, it's possible this will yield a positive public health outcome, much as banning Joe the Camel and candy cigarettes did in the US for tobacco. However since tobacco is an acquired taste, while children instantly like sugar, I'm still skeptical. I guess we'll see in a couple decades.

TIL the first woman in the US House of Representatives was elected before women had the right to vote.

(Presumably, the only way to stop a bad guy with a transgender-friendly privacy law is a good guy with a transgender-friendly privacy law, and thus transgender-friendly privacy law rights need to be enshrined in the Constitution as well)

It was before women had suffrage nationwide, but Montana, as with most states in the Mountain West, had granted women the right to vote before Nineteenth Amendment. In Montana's case, women's suffrage came two years before Rankin was elected. Rankin was actually a pretty interesting person, on account of her anti-war activism as much as for her historic election.

Audrey Hepburn grew up in Amsterdam, and felt close to Anne Frank, to the point that when Otto Frank asked her to play Anne in a film adaptation, she refused because she felt it would be too emotionally devastating for her.

Her father was British and she was attending to an English school when the World War II broke out. Her Duch mother then took her to the Netherlands because she thought it would remain neutral, just like in World War I. Didn't quite work out that way.

It kind of annoys me by the way that the lead sentence in the Wikipedia article describes her as simply "British", when she was born in Brussels to a British father and a Duch mother, spent her childhood between the UK, the Netherlands and Belgium, made her career in the United States, lived in Switzerland late in her life and was fluent in Duch, English and French. But it's hard to put all that in short, introductory sentence...

Portland has one of the highest concentrations of strip clubs in the world, including the world's first vegan strip club. The owner of the vegan strip club opened up a second location right next to the oldest strip club in Portland, which is also a farm-to-table steakhouse. It's going about as well as you'd expect.

Professional MLB team Cincinnati Reds (officially named Red Stockings in 1800, yes, baseball has been around for that long) changed their name to "Cincinnati Redlegs" from 1953 until 1959 at the height of McCarthyism, for fear of any associations with the communist block.
