There's no procedure for closing your account. If you want to make sure you can never come back, you can set your email and password to something random. If you want to make it harder to tie your posts to you, you can ask an admin to change your username, but this won't do anything about quoted posts

Didn't you listen to the audio information file? We even put it to a tune. "You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave."

We are not, and it's not clear if the GDPR would even apply to TCS.

How many phpBB forums have you been on that have a process for people to delete their accounts? I don't think I've ever seen one. TCS allows name changes and editing of posts whenever you feel like it, which is better than most forums I've been on.

I don't understand why so many people who leave this community want to erase themselves from existence. We have had a few members who go through the trouble of deleting all their previous posts. Are we that poisonous to you? I don't get it. But regardless deletion is just not a service we offer.

What if I had died, and my wife asked you to delete my account?

Given none of us know you IRL and we'd have no way of verifying that was the case, why would we act on that basis? It's not reasonable to combine keeping anonymity by using a false name and only giving out what information you choose, and expecting us to take account of personal circumstances we don't have any way of knowing. Until that post I didn't even know you had a wife.

The procedure is simple, we don't delete accounts.

NOTE, given that the world is currently governed by social media. and you allow Search Engine bots to scrape this site, I can easily see why people would want to be erased.

Should we...not do this? Isn't this why we allow people to create a profile and don't require any information to be shared that they don't want to? Is what you're saying here is that people are giving out information they don't want to share and we should be responsible for them regretting this decision? Even if so, we have no restrictions on people editing their posts so that stuff can be removed at any time at your discretion, all deleting the account would do is remove the ability to make new posts and also remove your ability to make changes to your posts.

Most forums are searchable by bots. It's not something you opt into, it's something you opt out of with a robots.txt, and very few sites opt to do that, mostly news sites which don't want Google displaying snippets.

If you don't expect us to delete all your posts, I'm not sure what the problem is. Deleting an account without deleting all that user's post leaves the display name up, it only prevents you from ever making new posts and deletes your user profile. And the only thing that achieves which you can't achieve by removing all the information from your profile is that people can no longer easily find all your posts by clicking on it, something only registered users can do anyways.

My suggestion partially delinks your posts from your username, and prevents you from making new posts, so it's a pretty good approximation for what deleting your account would actually achieve.

We've had a lot of users leave TCS over the years, some very dramatically, and as far as I know, you are the only person I know who has asked about deleting your account. I imagine this is because it wouldn't be very useful, and I still don't understand what you hope to accomplish, aside from making it very clear that you're leaving TCS.

I guess we're trying to determine what exactly you mean by closing your account, and what it is you are trying to accomplish.

You said you are not trying to go back and remove your posts. What is it you are wanting? Do want to make it so you can't post anymore? As sellers advised, you can change your credentials, or just, you know, not post.

Are you not wanting to have your avatar or username associated? Those can be changed.

In practical terms, what exactly are you wanting to have done to your account?
