The Death Of Memes

Wouldn't you know, it's the EU again. The Copyright Directive, a piece of legislation intended to modernise copyright law, is appearing in front of the European Parliament on June 20th. Article 13 of this document states that platform providers should "take measures to ensure the functioning of agreements concluded with rights-holders for the use of their works".

People think this will result in Youtube style automated sweeping of the internet for anything that might be copyrighted, and deleting it. I don't know how viable that is, but placing a duty on internet providers to police copyright at the least presupposes mass monitoring of all content on the internet regardless of what's actually posted. I can't see any ways this could possibly go wrong or be misused.

One unintended consequence of this might be that memes become contraband in the new internet. But I suppose we'll all be too busy paying through the nose for a decent internet speed to be able to download any memes in the high tech future.

Frankenstein.

And didn't Tess post a meme about this very subject at some point? A dystopian "memeingless" future where memes are outlawed by the meme police?

"If it were all so simple! If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them; but the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?"

I urge everyone in the EU to contact your representatives! I already sent emails to all 6 Estonian MEPs and also the 10 listed here.

The copyright directive is a nightmare and it makes me sick to my stomach to know that Estonian officials have been involved in crafting it. The whole process has lacked transparency. The criticisms from a multitude of experts and civil society have been ignored, the results of research commissioned by the European Commission itself have been suppressed. No impact assessment of the (lack of) synergy between different articles of the directive has been published. Lawyers have brought up contradictions in enforcing the GDPR and copyright directive at the same time. The only ones I can see supporting this draconian and extremely poorly prepared legislation are special interests in the form of big copyright holders. Or people who know nothing of the internet and remain willfully ignorant in the face of continuous protests and criticisms from experts, copyright lawyers and human rights organizations!

Let's keep it on topic and the passive-agressiveness to a minimum please.

The vote passed the committee stage. Next up is the actual vote, which might or might not pass.

WE ARE ALL FLOATING IN THE WINDS OF TIME. BUT YOUR CANDLE WILL FLICKER FOR SOME TIME BEFORE IT GOES OUT -- A LITTLE REWARD FOR A LIFE WELL LIVED. FOR I CAN SEE THE BALANCE AND YOU HAVE LEFT THE WORLD MUCH BETTER THAN YOU FOUND IT, AND IF YOU ASK ME, said Death, NOBODY COULD DO ANY BETTER THAN THAT...

How did I get dragged into this?

CASS? I know I'm supposed to know what it is but I don't. So could someone give a helpless old guy a clue?

I dunno. I see lots of serious topics in CaSS. And why's the 'a' small? Why's the sun orange? Why does big foot hide? Is he trying to prevent us from growing as a people?
