Chastened, Dewang backs off a little and leaves Wenchang to himself. His friend is losing his temper again, which at least means he must be feeling better. He returns to his tent and his not-precisely-neglected paperwork, making a stop to see how the school - at least, he has started to think of it as a school - is doing.
Everything seems normal, for a given value of normal. He mentally notes that Lin has put the classics aside and is explaining mathematics to a smaller group again, which isn't what he's supposed to be doing, but Dewang is rather inclined to encourage it. Jingyi is coaxing a small girl to repeat a poem, and Jun is scowling at a scroll. He seems to be using it for examples of mistakes, and the group in front of him appears amused. Kun is off by a sandy patch, writing words for some of the younger ones to copy.
At that moment, he hears someone behind him. "Master Du!"
It's He. It's not been long; he must have just arrived. Dewang turns around. "Did you have a safe journey?"
He nods. "Nothing much happened on the way. She was taken into the household." He fumbles. "She sent you a note."
Dewang looks at it. It is very short. "I will not forget your kindness. Lady Hu insists that I tell you you are a fool. Thank you." He smiles, relieved.
He looks towards the school. "Well, I should probably..."
"Get something to eat first," scolds Dewang, and He doesn't need to be told twice. Dewang spends some time in the stores, taking stock and checking the records. That done, he goes off once more to see how Wenchang is doing.

Then the LORD said to me, "Go again, love a woman who is loved by her husband, yet an adulteress, even as the LORD loves the sons of Israel, though they turn to other gods and love raisin cakes."
