Was Wenchang the only man in the army who didn't know, besides Captain Dang?

"His wife. She is... one of Captain Liang's, er..." He trails off.

Understanding dawns. "You mean to say...! But how do you know? ...No, never mind that," Wenchang says, catching sight of Dewang's face, and remembering a certain conversation in Ji.

"That vile woman! And Junyou, I always disliked him but this is truly despicable!" He cries. "I'm going to Dang Fu at once, if I don't see the wretch on the way first!" He storms away.

------Edit: FATE POINT SPENT

Wenchang arrives at Dang Fu's house a while later. He curses out Junyou mentally as he paces the room after the servant has left. Soon he hears footsteps behind him. He turns but anything he was going to say to the man dies in his throat as he sees Lady Zhou.

"Captain Wei! How nice to see you. How have you b-"

"Where is your husband?" Wenchang cuts in.

Her smile falters. "At the garrison. Is there a problem?"

Wenchang glares at her and seems to take a step closer, but then thinks better of it. His friend will deal with her as he wishes. "I should think you would know it, unfaithful petticoat that you are!" He leaves without waiting for a reply.

----------

"I wish this reunion was under happier circumstances, my friend. As it is, I come to you heavy with the knowledge that that bastard Liang Ju has been sleeping with your wife."

Dang Fu is furious. "I'll kill them both!" He marches off and Wenchang follows him, hand on his sword.

Dewang looks after Wenchang, horrified. He should have expected that; his friend is so painfully moral. At least he hadn’t asked for details – Dewang winces at the memory. And Junyou had thought it such a joke, too. “Well, I usually get names right, anyway,” he’d laughed, and bragged about Lady Zhou until Dewang had drifted off.

Another thought strikes him, and he puts his face in his hands. He hadn’t been the only one fooled by the man’s charms, and now it is all going to come out. Poor Lady Zhou. Captain Dang is a hard man, and he will be furious. As if Dewang isn’t responsible for enough deaths.

She is going to die, because he couldn’t keep his mouth shut. Unless… maybe he can do something to save her.

“Jingyi!”

She looks up from a circle of small heads.

“I need your help,” he says, and she follows him hastily. He explains Lady Zhou’s predicament as best he can.

“You want to save her,” Jingyi says quietly.

“I do. But I don’t want anyone to know. Her husband has to think she’s dead. Do you have a spare dress?”

She quickly stitches the dress’ openings shut, and they pack it with straw and set off to Captain Dang’s house as quickly as possible.

“The lady is ill,” her maid informs them, but Dewang nods at Jingyi, who pushes past the maid into the womens’ quarters.

Soon, Lady Zhou steps out, her face streaked with tears. Wenchang must have stopped by. Thank Heaven Captain Dang had not been at home.

“You must run,” he says abruptly. She is too distraught to ask how he knows. “Where would I go?” she sobs. “He would find me.”

Dewang shakes his head. “Walk up and down the room.”

“What?”

“Do it!”

She paces back and forth, as he watches carefully. “All right.” He sets the straw woman on its end, and it shivers. Then it stretches out its feet, and blinks. Lady Zhou stares as a perfect likeness of herself takes a step forward.

At that moment, there is a commotion outside. Wenchang and Captain Dang must be here.

“Outside, quickly!” he says, and Jingyi grabs the arm of the stunned Lady Zhou and hustles her out the back door. As they leave, they hear the maids screaming.

Lady Zhou sobs in the corner, as Jingyi ineffectually tries to comfort her. Dewang rests his head on his desk. Lin and He are standing at the entranceway, keeping an eye out and occasionally throwing nervous glances in.

“Sir, is there any chance you’d tell us what’s going on?” asks Jun. “Bitong!” whispers Kun, but Dewang shakes his head. “No, no, he’s right.” He beckons the two of them closer. “She was very, very foolish. Her husband will kill her if he sees her. I would rather she did not die.”

Jun frowns. “She can’t stay here long. Everyone will find out.”

“I know,” says Dewang. “I’ve disguised her face, but it’ll get round.” He looks at both of them. “I’m open to ideas.”

“Anyone you could send her to?” asks Kun.

Dewang considers. He has no family, and very few friends outside of the army. And it must be kept from Wenchang, too…

Suddenly he remembers. Ming. He hasn’t seen her in years, of course, not since she was married, but they’d had good times together. She would remember him. And she was a lady now.

“Yes. Yes, I know just the person.”

He writes a letter quickly.

”My dear, this girl has gotten herself into a spot of trouble. I thought of you right away. Could you take care of her, for old time’s sake?” He signs it with the name of Ming’s old madam, in case someone else sees it. She will recognize his handwriting.

Dewang kneels beside Lady Zhou. “Listen, you must flee this city.” She looks up at him and nods, and he gives her the letter.

“Go to Ye, to the household of Hou Delan. Give this letter to Fourth Wife Hu. Tell her Zhiteng sent you. And I’d tell her the whole story, if I were you. You can trust her.” Life as Ming’s maid wouldn’t be so bad, he thinks. At least, not nearly so bad as her other likely fates.

She agrees quietly, and Dewang calls He in. He’s seen the young man sparring with some of the soldiers, and he isn’t a bad fighter. At any rate, he’s the best escort Dewang can offer. He gives them both a few more instructions, mostly consisting of “Be careful” told half a dozen different ways, and sends them off. The illusion he has created to disguise Lady Zhou’s face should last until they are well out of the city.

“He’s out of his mind,” says Jun, looking after the pair as they leave with a few necessities hastily gathered together. “Well, Zaitian has something interesting to do, at least!”

Kun can only shake his head in agreement. “Fuli, are you all right?”

“I’m fine,” she sighs. “There are worse ways to be insane than wanting to save lives, you know.”

Lin inclines his head towards her.

“I suppose I can’t argue with that,” says Jun.

Kun steps back into the tent.

“Master Du?”

Dewang looks up. He’s been trying to gather his hair together after tearing at it nervously all day. “Yes?”

“Why did you do that?”

“I told you, I didn’t want her to die.”

“Was she important to you?”

Dewang sighs. “I’d met her twice. I barely knew her. If that's what you're thinking.”

Kun swallows. “Then why –"

“Haven’t there been enough deaths already?”

Kun nods slowly.

Well, that is taken care of. It was over shockingly fast. But the business is not nearly finished. He has no doubt that Wenchang and Captain Dang are searching for Junyou, if they have not already found him. There will be more trouble.

For a moment, he considers letting them handle it. After all, there are two of them. But he knows how dangerous Junyou is.

Dewang heads out, looking for the two captains.

Something is up. Baozi had seen Wenchang storming off looking furious, and now Dewang is shut in his tent, with two of his teachers standing outside as though on guard - one is Ren Lin, the quiet one with the slightly odd eyes, who Baozi rather likes. Or at least believes he would like, had he exchanged more than a few polite words. He's pretty sure the rest of them are in there with Dewang, and he thinks there is someone else too.

He lingers for a while, at some little distance, until the two watchers glance his way one too many times and he daren't hang around any longer. He leaves, walking rather quickly until he's out of their sight, but still torn with curiosity. He can always try and ask Dewang about it later. Of course if he wanted Baozi to know he would have asked him to join them, but he can only refuse: it would not be like him to be angry.

Were it not Dewang, Baozi would consider changing his shape and creeping back to eavesdrop, but that is out of the question. It would be a betrayal of his friend's trust in him - and his forgiveness over that evening in Ji, and besides, quite impossible now that Dewang knows his secret. Perhaps that is why he has kept this - whatever this is - to himself and his clerks and not involved Baozi: as kind as he was about it to his face, it must be hard to completely trust someone after finding out they have been sneaking around with magic and secretly listening to things.

He keeps a lookout for Wenchang, suspecting that whatever Dewang is up to is most likely also what has upset him. From what Baozi has seen in the time he has known the two of them, they have known each other for some time, but seem to have a rather turbulent relationship, and to alternate between being the best of friends and entirely at odds with one another.

Junyou may be here, too. He will have nothing to do with this business, but quite unrelated to it, it would be nice to see him again. Baozi rather liked the suave young Captain. He was easy to be around.

Wenchang looks down at the still woman with no particular emotion. He places a hand on Dang's shoulder, and the man turns to look at him.

"I just want to kill him Wenchang. I want to see him dead!"

Wenchang nods. "What are you going to do?"

"I'm going to get my men." Bojin snarls.

Wenchang hesitates, and then grimly nods again. "I will as well, then. Let us attack his camp together."

--------------

Dismounting at Liu Bei's encampment, Wenchang goes toward the area where the cavalry are positioned. He sees Baozi wandering and swiftly walks over to him, beckoning a nearby Boxiao over.

"Baozi, I'm taking some of my troops." Someone must be told, just in case. "Do you know Liang Ju? I believe you sparred with him once in Ji. He has slept with my friend Captain Dang Fu's wife. We are going to slay him to avenge the ruin of Bojin's honour, as is his right.

"Boxiao, gather trusted men and make ready to ride to battle immediately." The lieutenant nods and runs off.

Wenchang turns to Baozi again. "You are talented with the blade, and a good-hearted man. Are you in favour of righting this wrong?"

Baozi stares at Wenchang in astonishment. "Slay Captain Junyou..."

This is terrible. If he has indeed seduced another officer's wife, then it is only reasonable for Captain Dang to take revenge, but it is a dreadful shame.

"I am sorry he has brought this upon himself," Baozi says, carefully. "If he has done this thing, then Captain Dang does have that right - he is certain of it? And of course you would help your friend. But I do not know Captain Dang, and I... I like Junyou." It would be too presumptuous to call him a friend, on the strength of the little time they knew each other, but he believes they would have become friends, and certainly he has no wish to harm him. And it is already to be two on one. "So I will not help you. But I won't fight against you either," he adds quickly, seeing Wenchang's expression darken. "He is in the wrong."

Wenchang's adjutant finishes gathering the troops, and they prepare to ride off. It is not enough that the army must lose at least one Captain: they will have a battle within the camp, slay each other's troops and cause no end of havoc. Can he do anything to stop it, or to limit the damage they will do? He cannot, but the Colonel could command them to stop, and surely would - if only he knew in time. Baozi hurries away to search for Liu Bei.

By the time Baozi reaches Colonel Liu things are already hectic. People are already saying that Dang Fu is storming teahouses and brothels with a bloody sword and that Wei Yan has cavalry in the streets.

Liu Bei is already outside with a dozen men along with Guan Yu and Zhang Fei. He sees Mao Xu and calls out to him,

"Baozi, are we under attack? Is there a fire?" Liu Bei asks trying to figure out what could be happening. He listens as Baozi tells him that Dang Fu means to kill Liang Ju.

"I see, that is unfortunate but we must prevent the army from being involved," the Colonel turns to his brothers, "Yunchang, Yide, take a company of men and arrest Dang Fu and Wei Yan. I will go to the Garrison Commander at once."

The commander he speaks of is currently General Secretary Lu Bu so it is no trouble for Liu Bei to speak with him even in these circumstances. While he does that Guan Yu and Zhang Fei mount their horses and take a dozen cavalry and a hundred spearmen each and march to where the people say the rampaging captains can be found.

Just as Liu Bei is informing Lu Bu about the situation the two warrior brothers confront Wei Yan and Dang Fu at the foot of the House of Plum and Cherry where the madam is defiantly refusing to allow them to enter. That argument is cut short by Zhang Fei's famous roar that makes even his own soldiers shudder.

Guan Yu holds a hand out to his brother and takes the lead from there, "Captain Dang, Captain Wei, you must end this disturbance at once and come with us to speak with Colonel Liu."

He does not say 'or else', but it is clear that his even-toned statement is not a request.

"We only seek to know the whereabouts of Liang Ju, not wilfully cause unrest." Wenchang says. He turns to Dang Fu. "He seems nowhere to be found, we shall get justice from the higher-ups. We cannot disobey orders from our superiors, friend. Lay down your sword."

The two brothers confer quietly for a moment.

Zhang Fei: "Who is Liang Ju?"
Guan Yu: "One of Lu Bu's men. The one that practiced swords with Mao Xu."
Zhang Fei" "The one from BeiYe? He would tear this fool Dang Fu apart."
Guan Yu: "Indeed."

All this time Dang Fu continues to gesticulate with his sword quite unaware that all the blood has been shaken away somehow and he argues with Wei Yan, "Then we should go into the wilderness and drown Liang Ju in a river!"

Its at that moment that Guan Yu quietly nudges his horse into a walk and strikes Dang Fu in the back of his legs with the butt of his halberd.

Dang Fu sprawls in a heap and is about to leap to his feet and attack when Guan Yu quickly reverses his grip and levels the wide, curved blade of his weapon at him, "Wenchang has given you good advice, now stop being a fool."

Embarrassed and still enraged Dang Fu throws his sword into the dirt and complies.

It is not difficult to find Captain Dang and Wenchang. The shouts can be heard halfway through the city, and as he approaches there is one last, booming roar before things become quieter.

He turns the last corner to see Wenchang and Captain Dang surrendering to Liu Bei's brothers. This is bad - it could have been worse, to be sure, but Wenchang being arrested!

He heads towards the small group, ready to follow and help in any way he can.

Liu Bei does not ask Baozi to accompany him, but nor does he tell him to go anywhere else, and he does not object as the scholar follows. He might conceivably be of some use, and more to the point, he wants to know what is said at this meeting. That is far more intriguing than the exact details of how the two brothers take the delinquent captains under control.

Liu Bei intrudes on Lu Bu while he is having tea with his wife, Lady Yan. He immediately averts his eyes and makes apologies with a bow.

"General Lu," he says formally, "Please forgive this humble soldier for intruding, I..."

"Nonsense," Lu Bu says getting up and taking Liu Bei by the shoulder, "join us little brother."

Liu Bei gets halfway to the table before he protests, "General, there are soldiers in the streets and a feud among our subordinates. You must hand out justice before there is too much blood."

Lu Bu's attitude changes to one of irritation, "A disturbance among the ranks? Unacceptable!" he snarls before turning to his wife and completely surpressing his ire when he apologizes to her.

"Go quickly, husband," she says softly, "I will wait by the garden."

Lady Yan leaves and Lu Bu turns and storms off with Liu Bei and Baozi in his wake. He goes to the audience chamber shouting for his advisers to assemble. Then they wait for what seems like eternity before Guan Yu and Zhang Fei arrive.

They escort Wei Yan and Dang Fu inside while their soldiers wait in chains outside.

Lu Bu turns to Liu Bei with some confusion, "These are the culprits?"

"They are, General," Liu Bei says evenly.

"This makes little sense," Lu Bu replies before addressing the room, "What has caused these captains to take up arms within the camp?"

Many voices start at once but the story is eventually conveyed. Liang Ju had an affair with Lady Zhou and when he learned of it Dang Fu killed her in a rage then went searching for Liang Ju to kill him as well but he could not be found.

Lu Bu sighs, "It is a shame to punish good officers but discipline must be maintained. Take them to the square and cane each of the captains five times and each of their men ten."

Before Dewang can even think, he prostrates himself before the General.

“General Lu, surely you must realize the great provocation these men had suffered! What else could they have done, but gone after the scoundrel? It is a shame they caused a disturbance, but under the circumstances - imagine, for a husband to suffer such an outrage - it was only natural for them to be so angry as to forget themselves.”

Lu Bu is a warrior who styles himself a scholar. When a true scholar like Du Zhiteng shows him such respect it can only stroke his ego.

"I am moved by Zhiteng's words," he says emphasizing his own, higher, station by using Dewang's given name. "Dang Fu and Wei Yans' action can be excused in these circumstances, but discipline must still be absolute within the camp. So let the soldiers merely be take 5 lashes of the whip instead of the cane."

Wenchang walks forward and joins Dewang on the ground. He speaks up without so much as glancing sideways.

"General Lu, you are merciful. But my soldiers' only crime is their loyalty, of which I unfairly took advantage. Let me take the lashes meant for them."
