Things you never got around finishing.

Discussion, in general

Things you never got around finishing.

Postby DoglovingJim » Tue Feb 13, 2018 10:10 am

As I briefly gaze upon my new tomato plants which I fully intend on harvesting for many many years a question came to my mind which I quickly pondered. What things have I made that I never finished? What were the things I intended on doing but never did?

What are, the things I never got around finishing?

I have many of these "things", for example right next to those plants is a box I never got around completing (was building a box from scrap materials and ran out, but I'll get around to it eventually). And I could tell you about all the plans and goals I had with Boxer-Dog-Lady which I will now be never able to achieve, but I won't because that will take weeks.

But I digress.

Instead I bring this question to you as well ladies and gentlemen, whether it were goals or new years resolutions what are some of the things that you set out to do but never did? Goals you set but never achieved? Books you wanted to finish but never had a chance? Things you wanted to get or build but never got around buying or building?

What are, the things you never got around finishing?

Not that it's necessarily a bad thing, but I've started writing quite a few books before and never finished them. I think it's actually because the ideas about the plots were a bit too vague. That's why when people ask me what I'm writing, I usually just say "a thing." Is it a story? A book? A script? "Eh, it's a thing."

I also doodle ideas all the time, then think, "Oh, I should get some paints to turn this into what it actually looks like in my head." Yeah, that almost never happens.

It would be so much easier just to make a list of "things I actually got around to finishing," so I'm gonna just do that.

I heard this joke once. It was about how you keep an idiot in suspense...still haven't heard the punchline.

I never finished the game Chrono Cross. The final battle takes like 15-20 minutes to set up because of you have to strategically designate magic spells to each character you plan on using and then the fight itself can take up to an hour. I lost the fight twice and never felt like subjecting myself to that time sink again. So I haven't.

My room isn't decorated. There's a clock and an Eagles pennant on the wall. There's a box of stuff to put on the wall. I'm guessing I'll feel all measure-y and hang-y one of these days.

Growing into a functional adult I barely finish anything I start, usually because I don't define my goals clearly in the first place. That way, I didn't fail, I just stopped achieving at a particular point which can't be shown to be any less than I had intended.

"Tusser, they tell me, when thou wert alive,
Thou, teaching thrift, thyselfe couldst never thrive.
So, like the whetstone, many men are wont
To sharpen others, when themselves are blunt."

Anyone who has any kind of opinion fucking disgusts me.

I have a video in my editing program that's been sitting there for like a week and a half. It's a really good one, I don't know what's holding me back from finishing and posting it.

And his feel-good powers,
He made all the girls blush and sigh.

I toyed with the idea of making a text game with Inform. The problem is that I don't really have any good ideas for a game that's simple enough for me to actually code or, put another way, I'm too lazy to learn and write enough code to make something halfway interesting. At some point when my life is less utterly chaotic I'd like to sit down and revisit the possibility.

I was just thinking I should try to beat Portal 2 again. I got up to the final boss, but as I recall, it was really hard.

I started reading A Hacker Manifesto a few years ago, but didn’t get very far. Less concretely, I have a vague list of characters I’ve been thinking of writing something about, but I suck at writing.

(Presumably, the only way to stop a bad guy with a transgender-friendly privacy law is a good guy with a transgender-friendly privacy law, and thus transgender-friendly privacy law rights need to be enshrined in the Constitution as well)
