Mass Shooting in Vegas

Postby Doodle Dee. Snickers » Mon Oct 02, 2017 12:08 pm

I'm on my phone, so I can't link anything, but there was a mass shooting last night on a country music concert from the 32nd floor of a nearby hotel. So far there are over 50 dead and 200 wounded. The shooter has been named as Stephen Paddock, 64 years old, killed on scene.

That death toll is rising really sharply. When I first got online this morning it was 2 deaths - I don't recall the number of wounded. An hour or two later, 20 dead. Now... if the figure of 50 is accurate, even if it goes no higher, it's the deadliest shooting in modern US history, according to the BBC (ahead of the Pulse shooting last year which had 49 killed).

This article's likely to be updated as we find out more.

As soon as I heard the news I was like, “Oh God, I hope it’s not a Muslim.”

But then I realized no matter who is behind it. People on the opposite side will use it as an excuse to condemn whole groups of people. There’s just no way to win.

This year has just been too much.

That's what happened with me. I saw 2 early this morning and was like "that sucks", then went to breakfast later and saw 50 on the news. I was like "50!? What the fuck happened to 2?"

The killer's name was Stephen Paddock. He was 64, formerly from Nevada and is now currently a resident in hell.

Police also announced they were searching for a 62 year old woman whom they described as a 'companion', whom has apparently since been dentained or at least located.

I feel a little weird throwing her actual name around since I don't know if she had any involvement. I mean she could just be this guy's roommate and have had nothing to do with anything. Time will tell as they say.

I know right! Same exact thing here. Before I left for work this morning it was 2. Then when I got there it was 20. One update later I'm being told 50! I'm like "holy fuck!"

Not that if it had stayed at 2 it would have been less tragic or anything ... but ... fuck!

If there are really over 50 fatalities, this is the deadliest mass shooting in American history.

Apparently Paddock lived in a retirement community near Vegas, and has barricaded himself in the hotel room he conducted his attack from, to the point where it was necessary for the police to use explosives to gain access to the room. He had a ton of weapons in there as well. As to motivation, who the hell knows? The closest approximation I can come up with is suicide by cop or mental illness, but I genuinely can't guess better than that.

ETA: Police are now saying he shot himself. Previous reports suggested the police had killed him.

And of course, the hoaxes and fake posts have started.

*sigh*

Death toll now 50, 400 injured.

They found his companion and do not believe she was involved with the shooting.

Authorities were searching for a woman named Marilou Danley, described only as Paddock’s “traveling companion,” but police said early Monday they had located her as well as two cars they were seeking.

During a news conference Monday morning, Lombardo said that investigators have spoken with Danley, who was located outside the country, and do not believe she was involved in the shooting. Her relationship with Paddock was not immediately known, but they lived at the same address in Mesquite, Nev., according to public records.

Man, I thought we had kind of -- I don't know, sort of glided past having a new mass shooting every other week. I was hoping this sort of stuff was in decline, since it seems like we've gone a while without some new, horrendously tragic mass shooting in the news. (Especially since it seemed like the murder weapon of choice has been truck attacks, because we can't just go without some form of mass murder, now, can we.)

Fuck, this is just sad.

On a more flippant note, I guess it's time to bring this back out.

By the time I finish writing this, all the major news sources except Fox will have published articles on why we need stricter gun control, and most prominent Democrats will have said the same. So to head that off, I want to say that I really wish we could actually try to examine these situations for once and figure out what went wrong.

This is a horrific loss of life, but we experience similar mass shootings (albeit normally not on this level) at a high enough frequency that even to get in the national spotlight for more than 15 minutes, they need to be particularly violent. What is it about these people that makes them want/need/whatever to do this? Is it something in their heads? Something in our culture or society? Is it exclusive to America, or is it just more evident here?

We need to figure out what kind of disease this is, and how to cure it. A 64 year old man doesn't just one day go out and murder 50 people for no reason. I don't know a single thing about him, but I do know that a person doesn't just not murder 50 people for 64 years, then suddenly change his mind and do the opposite. This is something that desperately needs to be fixed.

Well ISIS has claimed responsibility for the shooting. I gotta give it to them, recruiting an Caucasian and elder person is pretty progressive for them, they're really trying to bring the organization into the 21st centuary. Honestly I just honor this is true so we can start racially profiling white guys now...or to a least extent dudes with beards.

BBC now says (same link I posted earlier) that so-called IS is claiming that the gunman converted to Islam a few months ago and was working for them, but provided no evidence of any of this and it doesn't sound like anyone believes it at present.
