Well, it's that time of year again. Japanese Beetles are descending like a plague on all our roses, just striping the leaves and lounging around like they own the plant.

In better news, the Gaura is looking especially nice:

The vegetables are starting to roll in; tomatoes and cukes abound. Is anyone else growing produce?

I didn't plant them myself (I think they were planted a few tenants back) but there's a thick patch of alpine strawberries in my little square of back garden. They're so laden with fruit that I don't know what to do with it all.

I think Weird Al can help you with that.

I hate you so much right now.

Alpine strawberries are delicious and I could probably eat like twenty pounds of them in one sitting.

Late Summer/Early Fall plants are blooming right now in abundance.

I saw some Iron Weed, Sweet Autum, Swamp Sunflowers, Joe Pye Weed and some Jewel Weed out driving yesterday. Hopefully I can get some pictures tomorrow.

:( I'm not allowed to have Latana in my garden - it's classified as a Grade 1 Alien Invader Species in South Africa.

Re: FLOWERS! GARDENING!

So this isn't gardening per se, but I think I'd like to try to grow some flowers indoors. Right now almost all of the plants I have are succulents, and those that aren't succulents have a tendency to die when I fail to water them. (The exception is a peace lily, which despite not being a succulent wilts when it needs water and them comes back.)

Still, I want to give it a try anyways, and maybe put some hydrogel crystals in the soil to deal with my poor watering habits.

The plant that I'd most like to try are Inca lilies because I like the flowers and they bloom for a long time, but I'm not sure any place in Austin sells them. I'd also like to try pineapple lilies and moraeas, but it seems like those would be even harder to find. I'm thinking I might also try gladiolas, calla lillies, or red-leafed dahlias. But really, I'm open to anything more interesting than a gerbera.

Any suggestions?

Besides shrinking myself to their size and going on a solo termination mission, is there a good way to get rid of spider mites on a plant that's outside but needs to be brought in before frost is a factor? I've read that keeping it watered helps but it's not working.
