The 13 Most Insane Things Happening Right Now (1/26)

Postby Ccharge » Tue Jan 26, 2016 9:41 pm

I rarely read these posts, but today for some reason I did. One of them struck a chord with me. Enough so to make an account and post here.

#7 was a valiant defense of our rights to draw dicks on things and - I'm joking obviously.

Seriously though #9, the one on child pornography and the FBI. What is everyone's opinion on the subject?

Personally I see the use of the site as a nesassary evil. As much as taking it down immediately would be nice, those pictures are already out there. Taking down the purpotrators and consumers of this child abuse is more important. I was surprised by the thread under Flawless89's comment on the subject. cptnoremac brought up the idea that the people caught were simply new users, and that ultimately they were not hurting anybody by browsing this website. They may be new, but they were users, and they helped fuel a market for child abuse. I have sympathies for pedophiles that want help, but I won't stand by and let abuse continue because some feel their victims as well. Therapy is the way out, not continuing the unhealthy habit.

Of course this thread is open to discussion to the other subjects, just wanted to get discussion rolling in this.

Edit: sorry, forgot the link! Thanks sunglasses!

One lawyer complained the tactic was "comparable to flooding a neighborhood with heroin in the hope of snatching an assortment of low-level drug users."

Does this strike anyone else as a ridiculous analogy? I mean never mind that we're comparing people with a treatable disease to people who are actively abetting the systemic abuse of children.

This is going to make me sound really heartless and angry towards people who are addicted to child pornography, which I mean, there are probably worse targets for heartlessness but still... I look at the site like my first apartment on my own. It was a duplex and it was basically a straight shot from the front to the back, with walls separating rooms on the way, and I loved it--until I discovered a cockroach in my kitchen. And then another. And another. The place was infested; my landlords were so apologetic and I felt badly for them because it's not like they knew, but at least they took action right away. An exterminator came out and, while he sprayed around the perimeter of the house to keep new pests from getting in, he didn't spray in the house at all. I asked him why, and he said when you spray in the house, the bugs just go deeper into the walls and wait it out, and once the poison wears off they come back out and you're right back where you started. Instead, he used a weird brown gel that he stuck in the corners of cabinets, on windowsills, anywhere a cockroach might come out looking for food. The bait was designed to not kill the cockroach right away, but it would die once it returned to the colony. Then, when it was cannibalized by the other roaches, they would also be poisoned. In this way you not only treat the symptoms, killing the few hundred roaches that walk through the spray, but also deal with the thousands of roaches in the wall.

Of the 100,000 estimated users on the site, in the two weeks the FBI ran the site they tracked down 1300 true computer addresses and made 137 arrests.

I'd just like to point out that the site in question was called... Playpen. Gross. Gross gross gross gross gross gross gross. They knew why they were there.

I feel that man deserves the right to draw dicks on children and FBI alike.

What is wrong with banks making money from fees? These can be avoided if you plan ahead. Or choose a bank without excessive fees, which is possible thanks to the free market. "I hate banks" is the new "I hate Jews," which is ironic because Bernie is Jewish.

The problem, Tesseracts, is that they will sometimes re-work and change the order of bills that come out in such a way that they stand to make the most money.

It's a pretty damn big deal and why M&T lost a class action suit.

I think distributing child pornography, or allowing child pornography to be distributed, is vile no matter the reason, and a 1.30% track rate (and a further 10.54% arrest rate from that number (both of those based on the numbers Notch stated)) far from justify it in my eyes.
