7 Things You Learn as a Cop Pretending to be a Hooker

I don't like this article, for reasons that should be glaringly obvious to anyone who's known me longer than five minutes. Great job ruining the lives of desperate women and lonely men, guys! You've really made the world a better place.

While I agree with you completely that prostitution should be legal, I'm not certain that it's mostly lonely men who hire prostitutes.

I mean, speaking as a lonely man: I would never hire a prostitute, because it's not just sex I'm after. As I told a friend of mine in college who thought relationships were mostly about sex: "I have hands, you know." It's always been that I like having people to do stuff with, and talk about the stuff we're doing, and talk about other stuff. If there was a particular (female) person I could cuddle up with at night and occasionally have sex with, that would be all the better.

Admittedly, in society and general and college in particular, there is a lot of male-virgin-shaming, which made things worse in college (the virgin-shaming is society at large isn't nearly bad enough to bother me personally), but the mockery is mostly about how awkward men lack the confidence and virility to persuade women to unzip their paints. But hiring a prostitute doesn't seem like it would reduce the mockery. Rather to the contrary: it seems like a cliche that when an awkward man has sex his friends ask something along the lines of "how much did you pay her?

And yet at the same time, actually putting yourself out there to find and hire a prostitute seems like it would take cojones that socially awkward men don't have. I was approached by a girl who might have been a hooker in Turkey, and I freaked the hell out.

Admittedly, it's hard to tell because so few Americans hire prostitutes and those who do don't talk about it, but I've always had the impression that the men who generally frequent prostitutes are the kind of men who make decent money, like partying and sex, don't have time for the touchy-feeliness of a relationship, but feel that the amount of sex they have defines their worth as people. Basically, the quip that "you don't pay a hooker for sex; you pay her to leave afterwards," reflects the mentality I've always figured straight men who visit hookers must have.

So yeah, I support legal prostitution, but I think it will be mostly the Charlie Sheens and Elliot Spitzers of the world availing themselves of it.

A wide variety of men frequent prostitutes for just as wide a variety of reasons. One of the things that disturbed me about this article:

The ones we dealt with were primarily the $10 variety for fellatio ... and that's usually as far as it went. There's a whole kinda payment system ... a lot of the payment was in drugs, of course, and a common [911 call from prostitutes] is something we'd refer to as 'failure to pay.' These women would call in and say they were raped, assaulted, robbed ... it turned out their John just didn't pay them.

I can't help but wonder if they put that part in brackets because the verbatim quote was some kind of shitty slang, like NHI, an abbreviation some cops use when investigating crimes against prostitutes. It stands for No Humans Involved. The article goes on to wonder how many legitimate complaints have been dismissed as "failure to pay." Besides, not paying a hooker should be a crime. It's theft of service. The law is the law, no matter who's breaking it, which is why drug dealers (and hookers, I'm sure) are expected to pay income tax.

By the way... *hugs Mr. Sellers ebulliently* it's good to see you back around!

I'm not gonna comment on how stupid it is because...it's stupid, it's a waste of taxpayers' money, and...just stupid, really.

But I'd really really love it if a John cop and a female copstitute were to accidently bust each other.

It wasn't so much the article I don't like as the law. I don't see prostitution as a problem in and of itself, so I'd much prefer that the law focused on regulating the industry, to minimise the negative aspects.

Incidentally, prostitution is legal where I'm from (Queensland, not Tennessee), so long as it is done out of a licensed brothel. Unfortunately, from what I understand, the regulatory framework is set up so that it's extremely difficult to run a profitable business and comply with the law, which winds up pushing people back into the black market. Because nobody wants to be the politician who made it easier for brothels to operate.

No, they want to be Mr. Staunch Morality, tough-on-crime public crusader for the sanctity of our daughters' vaginas! Meanwhile, I'm sure a lot of them have "escorts" on their payroll. There are a lot of hypocrites where prostitution (and sex in general) is concerned.

This is also pretty much the reason it is still illegal to sell porn in most Australian states. So we just mail order it from the ACT or watch it for free on the Internet.

I find my country's love of censorship hilarious, given that we seem to be one of the most foul-mouthed nations on earth.

Also, thank you for making me visualise our politicians having sex. Please enjoy this photo of former Prime Minister, Tony Abbot in speedos while I go throw up.

Nobody wears a hat like that unless they're secretly into some weird, perverted stuff.

One would think that someone putting that much focus on their daughters' vaginas would be cause for alarm.
