Anime and Manga

Postby OdenHavik » Thu Apr 25, 2013 5:43 am

What anime or manga do you like? Do you prefer one over the other?

I figure this could be a good place to discuss anime/manga of all types. Which is better between the manga or anime adaptation or vice versa. And if nothing else maybe find something new to read.

I love FLCL

Watch it if you haven't. It's 6 episodes and totally worth it for the frenetic, wtf-ness.

Eric
I've read Ichigo 100%. It always annoyed me that he ended up with Nishino though. I thought he should have went for Toujou. One Piece is my favorite manga and I read Toriko every week.

James
I have seen FLCL. I watch it whenever it's on Adult Swim.

Robert
One Punch Man is hilarious.

I agree with FLCL, it's deliciously mental.

I don't have a particular preference between manga and anime, so I have favourites in both categories.

Manga? I'd say Ikigami, One Piece (mostly for nostalgia though), Mushishi and Death Note.

Anime? At the top of my head: Hellsing (AOV), Black Lagoon, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei and Mushishi.

And of course, like most people who like anime/manga, I love most of Miyazaki's works (and Ghibli Studios).

I always read the latest Naruto, One Piece, or Bleach. I enjoy History's Strongest Disciple and The Breaker/ Breaker:New Waves

Also just started Nisekoi, which is now my guilty pleasure.

Besides DBZ (as an unimaginative kid), I've only watched GTO. I watched 20 something episodes and never continued for some reason, but I enjoyed what I did watch.

Ranma 1/2 and Outlaw star are in my top 5. My husband had seen neither, so I introduced him to them, and we're currently making our way through cowboy bebop.

I tend to prefer manga on character based stories. Since it takes me longer to read than to watch, I feel like I've known the characters for longer. For more action-y ones, anime. Sometimes it's so hard to follow fight scenes in manga. I think it was Trigun that I finally gave up on because the manga was making no sense to me.

I prefer manga, for reasons I'm not entirely clear on. The exception, for me, would be Samurai Champloo, which was created first as an anime. The music is such an integral part that it's hard to read the manga adaptation. Or at least I imagine it is. I wouldn't know, I haven't tried.

My favorite manga series:
Berserk (it's a shame this series probably won't end the way it deserves to)
Hajime No Ippo (see above)
The Breaker (I know, I know, but it still reads right to left, so suck it)
Gangsta
Veritas (manhwa)

Things I read regularly:
Bleach
Naruto
Fairy Tail (ugh...)
Karate Shoukoushi Kohinata Minoru
The Breaker: New Waves (ugh...)
History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi
Claymore (as regularly as possible, even if it no longer makes any sense)

Soreike! Anpanman, which is also the source of my icon, incidentally. Baikinman's hot shit.

As for manga, I prefer things like Junji Ito. My interests are entirely consistent, screw you.

I don't like my Animes to be really serious, so some of my favorites have been Lucky Star, Azumanga, and K-On

I'm watching K-On right now! I mostly got into it for the animation (which is great), but I also love everything else.

I mostly like really well animated/drawn or silly stuff. A while ago I got really into Yakitate Japan.

Anybody ever heard of "Legend of Koizumi" (Mudazumo Naki Kaikaku)? Because if you haven't you should really check for the sheer madness that it is.

Here's the synopsis:
Junichiro Koizumi. Prime Minister of Japan, or God of Mahjong incarnate? Watch him clash with other world titans such as George W. Bush, Kim Jong Il, and Vladimir Putin in the one force that matters in the political world: mahjong.

And here's the kind of things you will see:

Image
Cyborg Kim Jong-Il, because of course he was going to be a cyborg.

Image
Do you believe me if I say the worst has yet to come?

Image
Well, I guess it's difficult to top such a casting.
But that's still not the worst.

Spoiler: show
Image
Yep. Super Aryan. Nuff said.

Really, a must read.
