J.F. Sargent isn't terrible

Postby Tesseracts » Tue Jan 27, 2015 5:26 pm

J.F. Sargent has acquired a reputation for being terrible due to some articles written years ago that shall not be mentioned. However, lately, I have noticed his articles are not terrible. This article is funny and informative. I especially like the part about caffeine not making you more creative, because artists are always drinking coffee and insisting that it's helpful. How dare they do something that doesn't even work?

Caffeine makes you focused, and focus is apparently the opposite of creativity. I've always seen my lack of ability to focus as a liability, even though my therapist tells me people with ADHD are more creative. Turns out, there is a study involving finding creative uses for a brick (a very important life skill) supporting the theory that a wandering mind leads to more creativity.

Makes sense. Broadly speaking, creativity means thinking of new things and focus means continuing to think of the same thing.

Yeah, he has been improving a lot since his hipster activism and his Neo-Nazi articles. Either he eventually wised up or he's just free to expand on things because cracked made Iannone the new SJW fanatic guy.

Sargent wrote:Because Internet activism -- particularly with the weird culture that seems to pervade Tumblr -- isn't about making a difference, or even raising awareness; it's just about proving how superior the writer is to his or her audience. Tumbloggers (or whatever you call them) with blogs like Shutthefuckupsexists.tumblr.com or IWillLiterallyMurderYouIfYouMakeARapeJoke.tumblr.com aren't actually trying to spread awareness or insights. They're just trying to outdo each other, to win this weird competition that has nothing to do with anything but their own egos. They all want to find the new, more nuanced, more complicated social problem ("adult privilege" refers to the injustice that teenage voices aren't valued, and "tall privilege" refers to fuck knows what) that no one else has heard of. They're treating social issues the way hipsters treat bands: using the advantage of knowledge to make it painfully, irrefutably obvious that they are better than you.

Not to be the nail in the foot, but I feel like his tone has remained the same, just his content has shifted to something you happen to agree with.

I still wouldn't exactly call myself a fan of his but, credit where credit's due, that was a very good article, exactly the kind of thing I used to come to Cracked expecting to read.

Actually, his most recent article about how toys socialise children into arbitrary gender roles was fine. It wasn't particularly funny but it was kind of interesting. He began by stating outright he expected to find there was no significant difference between boys and girls and that the only difference was one we introduced, but then freely admitted he was wrong and there were inherent tendencies specific to boys and girls, even demonstrated in monkeys.

His remaining argument was that we do a horrible job of catering to those inherent biases and that the arbitrary roles we set don't seem to match up to these tendencies, which I thought was a reasonable way to argue about something even if it's still another gender politics article.
