"That seems like a better route," Renier points.

"Let us continue on it, then," Ragnar says amiably.

Sorry, missed the preceding post.

Renier, Ragnar, Coenwulf

They follow Sir Renier's path for several hours when the forest floor begins to feel spongy. After another half mile it is quite wet and soon after the entire wood is flooded half way up the shanks of their steeds.

Its not long before they spy an island a spare yard above the flooded terrain with a distant dam down river that is clearly the cause of this mess.

Roll Awareness

Dagobert, Leufroy, Adele, Rashad, Shadi

Ermeline is very pleased with herself and happens to know a great deal about her lands.

"There is a path near here that is typically hidden by the growth. The smallfolk think they are clever by hiding it so that my father's retainers won't use it to hunt. But he was a generous man and never mentioned it at moot and allowed them to use it to poach and gather to improve their meager livings when times were hard."

She looks around more studiously and smiles, "It seems they still understand the bargain and have not over hunted my forest. I suspect this Jewel Knight knows of these trods as well and I suggest we head that way."

Shadi, uncharacteristically quiet in the cold of the woods, perks up at the sound of secret paths and hidden doings. That is more like the tales of old!

"Let us check that trail then, my lady," she agrees enthusiastically. "If they are most used by the smallfolk then the tracks of a knight will be clear to see, should God will it so.."

Like Shadi, Adele has been uncharacteristically quiet.

"I agree, we should check the trail"

Rashad has listened carefully and said very little until now, as is his habit - God did not see fit, after all, to give men two mouths and one ear. Now he nods thoughtfully. "Yes. And if God wills it, gentle ladies will soon be able to ride their lands in safety again."

Rosamund clamps her eyes and shakes her head. "It's nothing". She clears her throat, and rounds on the goblin, unclasping her cloak and setting it aside, placing her hands on her hips. "Well, demon, I think you've got some explaining to do. If you tell me anything interesting, I'll cut your bonds and give my hound a head start before I send her after you."

Renier, Ragnar, Coenwulf

On the small island that has been created by the flooded woods Ragnar spies a thin man watching them from the shadow of a tree.

Dagobert, Leufroy, Adele, Rashad, Shadi

Its not as obvious as Shadi had expected, but Dagobert's keen hunting sense finds signs of horse tracks on the path. Most interestingly for the last five yards or so of the path before it emerges onto the road it looks as if the earth has been churned and carefully repaired. It is not a stretch to assume that a knight charged out from this position and then hid his tracks.

After perhaps a mile, on a large branch that extends over the path, a magnificent falcon sits and watches them with a strange intensity. It flies off to the north with a screech as they reach it.

Not much further along they begin to hear music and at another turn in the path they come to a wide clearing with a small hill. A gentle stream flows beside the hill and atop it is a richly appointed pavilion.

There are no horses present and the music comes from within.

Rosamund

The goblin's voice is like if a rat could talk and its happy to recount how they built the dam to dry up the stream and eventually flood the village below. While they were waiting for enough water to build up they got bored and figured they would harass the hermit and try to starve the nutons.

"They got good houses. Once they leave we has them instead."

"How peculiar," says Ragnar to his companions. "There appears to be a fellow out on that island watching us." He nods in the thin man's direction.

Does the island look like it can be reached by wading, or will I need to try my modest Swimming skills?

"How curious to see such a pavilion here," Shadi says, cautiously advancing towards it. "Let us see who plays such delightful music, shall we?"

It's not, after all, as though a group of knights ahorse can be particularly stealthy. No need to pretend that they were.
