"Of course, thank you, sir, " smiles Renier. "God willing, we will take care of it soon enough, and you can all rest easy again."

"I can only promise to try, but I will set out immediately. On one condition. My comrades are traveling nearby, also in search of the wolf. I need to know if they are riding into danger, and if so, how. Be as vague as you like, but you understand that this one piece of information is time sensitive; if something were to happen to my kinsmen before I could return your tools, it would no longer be of use to me. I hope my small gifts, and my word as a knight, are enough to convince you of my good intentions."

After making camp, Dagobert sets off to scout the perimeter, his wolf's-head helmet hanging from the saddle.

Rosamund shortly concludes that she won't learn anything useful, and bids the Nutons good night. She crawls out of the cramped crevice, and stands to stretch her long limbs in the moonlight. She tuts when she looks down to see the state her dress is in from crawling around on her arms and belly, but no matter, she needs to change anyway.

She pulls the dress over her head and neatly folds it, stowing it in her saddlebag, and instead donning a tunic, trousers, an arming coat, and finally her maille over it, belting La Plume Puissant across her waist. She wraps herself in her blue cloak all the way around, and pulls the hood down, to keep her shining armor from reflecting any light.

"Hecate, it seems the Nutons have something useful to tell us about the wolves, but they won't tell us until we sort a problem out for them. The other's are on the right track though apparently, so I reckon we should go sort this little business out, find out what we can, and report back to the others once we have something to report. How'd you like some goblin for breakfast?"

Assuming an affirmative response, she douses the campfire, and with a few magic words and gestures, she turns Hecate and Herself not only invisible, but almost imperceptible to the other senses as well. They set off upriver to seek the kobolds.

Succeeded Energetic to continue the quest at night.

Crit Glamour for making us invisible. (Not really but GM's are being wascally so it's being counted as a crit.)

Dagobert's search turns up very little other than that the fallen twigs and branches nearby have been gathered as well as the acorns. After a half hour of that he stops and can palpably feel the silence. Other than the insects the nearby river and the occasional hoot of an owl he hears the distinct lack of wolf howls.

The forest makes her path slow as the trails keep veering away from the river but the moon is bright and the river is swift and easy to hear. Without Hecate though its likely she would become hopelessly lost in the dark and even still it is near to false dawn when they break out of the heavy growth and follow the river until, curiously, it grows quiet.

Up ahead in the moonlight Rosa observes a flooded wood. The river has expanded dozens of yards beyond its banks to form a shallow pond. Beyond that she sees two things. First is a low island that would normally be a rise no more than 15 hands high and past that what appears to be a dam.

Hecate smells faint smoke from the island.

Rosamund slowly and cautiously fords the river on horseback, heading to the small island. Hecate seems to detect a man hiding in a bush up ahead. Rosamund carefully dismounts her horse, quietly draws her sword, and creeps up to investigate on foot.

Coenwulf, Ragnar, Renier

While Rosamund is away on her midnight ride the men settle down to sleep whereupon they experience a strange, and frightful dream.

The knights dream they are shepherd dogs keeping guard over a flock of sheep in a light forest. When suddenly, one large black dog goes mad and attacks the grazing sheep, biting them until they bleed heavily.

Across the pasture the shepherd stands with his back to the flock, fighting off a pack of wolves.

The dream ends as abruptly as it began and the knights all awake at once well before first light.

To make sense of this dream you must roll Love (God). If you succeed you may also roll Religion to help anyone who doesn't succeed Love(God)understand.

Rosamund

Being invisible and silent makes it quite easy to approach the huddled man in the brush. He gives no indication at all that he is hiding from her and indeed when she gets close she can see his eyes are fixed upon his shack. The man himself wears a rough smock of burlap or hemp, tied with a simple rope in the manner of a monk. His hair is long and tangled as is his beard and both are shades of grey.

She follows his gaze and, to her surprise she can see the faintest shimmer in the air. When it clears she sees a dozen, child-sized figures around and on the hovel. One pair is busy stealing firewood, another few tear at the roof of branches and brush and the rest seem to be looking for something in the clearing.

She quickly deduces that the man in hiding is the displaced inhabitant of a hermitage, and that it would be best if he were left to his refuge. She sidecircles about a dozen yards to keep from drawing attention to him, and then looks to Hecate, whispering her plan. "Alright, here's what I'm thinking. We've got surprise on our side, but I won't be able to keep the spell going after the fighting starts, so we need to take as many of them as we can in the first sweep. I'll take those three in the clearing, you take those two at the woodpile, and then we join up in the middle to clear out those four over there, and then we'll deal with the three on the roof. Good luck, my friend." She gives Hecate a big hug around her waist-width furry neck. "Let's send them back to hell where they belong." With that, she breaks off, and rushes into the clearing with her sword poised to strike.

Adele, Dagobert, Leufroy, Rashad, Shadi

The night passes for the northern party and they are left to reflect on what the lack of howls means for them. Surely it means trouble for their cousins, but there is naught to be done about it other than to pray they are cautious.

It will be another day of stopping and talking with every peasant they pass before they end up east of Lady Ermeline's estate at Lorcé-chèssion and finally meet the foresters who found the wounded knights and can show them to the spot.

Its only another mile north and the knights must agree it is an excellent place for an ambush so they approach carefully but there are no recent signs of passage. The commonfolk refuse to come this way anymore and they are the first knights to come investigate.

The woodsmen are eager to leave and depart when its clear they know nothing else.

A half hour later, as the comb the scene they hear the clatter of swift hoofbeats coming quickly from the way they came. They quickly take arms and mount their warhorses when the rider, black cloak flying behind, rounds the corner at a gallop.

The white horse rears as the rider pulls hard on the reigns and comes to a skidding halt.

"Well, this is certainly a nice welcome," she laughs and pulls back her hood to reveal none other than Lady Ermeline. A minute later her tired, frazzled handmaiden catches up.

“Lady Ermeline!” exclaims Dagobert and falls to his knees. “My heart swells with joy at seeing you again, but these woods are dangerous. The robber knight was last seen just here. Pray, let us escort you to your mansion!”

Love (God): 1d20 = 11 vs 5.

Ragnar wakes up feeling uneasy. The dream seems full of portents, but he can't quite figure out what it's portentous of. Mostly what he gets from it is "wolves are bad," which aside from being obvious he can't even entirely agree with. Some of his best friends are wolves!

He sets about readying himself to continue the search. He'll make sense of this one way or another.

Renier wakes up with a start. He was never much religious, but what could the clue be but a sign from God? He fervently thanks Him. It seems all three of them had the same experience, going by the others' faces. He wonders if Rosamund dreamt it too. The villain was a corrupted sheepdog. Ragnar looks confused but Renier can't seem to find the words to explain it in full to him, save to say, "The enemy we seek is one of ours. We need to leave at once."

But first, to find their cousin.

Love (God): rolled 5 against 8

Renier, Ragnar, Coenwulf

Morning comes and Coenwulf explains the strange dream until Ragnar understands. The dogs are the Duke's knights, the shepherd is the Duke himself, away on campaign. They seek a knighy, sworn to their own liege who has forsaken his oaths and now menaces the people he is meant to protect.

There is a certainty purpose that the three knights gain from their understanding. A feeling that the shadows are not so dark and that they are destined to prevail.

With that they set off hoping to locate Rosamund. They check back where she should have been and find signs of her camp, but no sign of her. It is as if she simply vanished.
