Bayeux

Ragnachar is passed roughly from the side of Persidius, to be knelt before Roderick. The crowd cheers, the Earl can do nought but stand in awe of the loot train passing into his possession. He gestures for Persidius and Eliver to approach him, and he embraces them both, raising their hands to be beheld by the troops. "My knights, my friends, your deeds do me great honor. And you as well, see I not the giantsbane himself, and the leaping knight? Come, you both share in this triumph." He beckons to them and gives them each a hearty handshake. "What has it been? Not three summers since I lay the sword upon your shoulders? I should strike you all again, for the insolence of girding yourselves in such glory in such short a time!"

Persi looks slightly uncomfortable but El's not troubled by being the centre of attention, and grins.

He thinks of mentioning Leiryn, who was just as quick over the wall as he and who of course ought to be the first to be chastened for precocity, but that would mean explaining why he is not here, and Persidius evidently thought it better not to mention that yet. After all, Terrwyn is involved and the less said abut her in the Earl's presence, the better.

Persidius isn't terribly good at humor or how to respond to it so he naturally reverts to polite,

"All I do, I do in your name, my lord. And because of that I have, among the plunder, a gift that is both grand and terrible."

He has Diane bring the Vulture Banner to them and explains, "I took this myself from a Frankish crypt the heathens made in the ruin of the grand cathedral. It is said to be possessed of a curse by which it will grant an army victory but will kill the standard bearer in exchange."

The Army
"Dear lord...but who needs such a thing with such valiant knights as I have. Come! We must to the prince."

The Earl presents Persidius, Eliver, Miles, and Bleddyn to Prince Madoc in his pavilion, recounting the deeds of his division. At first Madoc is incredulous, but when he is shown his own fifty cartloads of treasure, he cannot help but accept it. "God's teeth" he is heard to exclaim. For some reason he doesn't seem entirely thrilled at the victory, to the extent that Roderick is, but nevertheless, he orders a slaughter of stolen beasts, the summoning of looted wine, and the commencement of a camp-wide feast. He invites them all to dine with him in his tent for the next few days.

Chance for extra glory. Trait Roll: Modest or Proud.

On Modesty, praise the conduct of others, they get glory.
On Pride, praise your own conduct, you get glory.

"Rag- er, Ragana - he would never have been taken if it weren't for Sir Persidius!" says Miles. "And he was gravely wounded!"

Succeeded Modest.

Not good.

Not good not good not good.

In the time since Terrwyn disappeared from view with the women in tow, Leiryn has cautiously approached Vire in short, stumbling increments, his paranoia dragging him forward and his rationality pulling him back; his men follow obligingly. By half an hour's time, he is just close enough to see the open gate -- and a huge collection of tents before it. The only thing he can't see is the oddball knight or her escort.

Very not good. Potentially quite bad.

There is every possibility, of course, that nothing bad happened -- that Terrwyn has merely gotten distracted by the woman she was clearly fawning over, or is trying to negotiate an unconditional surrender for the entire nation by herself. But Leiryn can't shake the worst case scenario. His eyes browse over the tents, and the smoke, and the distance, and he can't help but imagine that he's now alone in enemy territory, miles from his allies.

Before he can be stricken by another horrid vision, he steels his nerve and rides forward at a quick-but-wary clip, ordering the knights behind him to watch and wait, but to charge in if it seems like there's trouble. Gods willing, this will have turned out to be a bunch of worrying over nothing.

As Leiryn draws nearer and nearer, he is struck by the universality of army camps. Unwashed louts sitting around campfires, sharpening their spears or emptying ale jugs. Young lads polishing buckles and boots for their masters. Indeed, this Frankish army could almost pass for a British one. Adding to the similarity, these Franks must have defeated a British force recently, because all around the camp are strewn painted kite shields, and warhorses are tethered all about. Men nearby can be heard to sing "God Save the Bastard King of Cooooornwalll!".

Hold on a moment.

These aren't Franks. They don't just look like Britons, they are Britons. He's a great distance into the camp already when he makes this observation.

As he nears the gate, he sees that the gates are wide open, hanging off their hinges in fact. The only thing standing between Sir Leiryn and the town beyond are a pair of sentries chatting and leaning on their spears.

Cheeks flush with private embarrassment and skin going a bit clammy, Leiryn trots up to the sentries and interjects into their conversation. "S'cuse me, lads, but has Sir Terrwyn passed through here? Tall female knight with a cadre of ladies accompanying?"

The sentires exchange a significant glance, one of them chuckles. "Yes...you could say that. Are you a friend of hers?"

"Yeah, of a sort." Leiryn is puzzled, but not wholly surprised by their reaction. "What happened? Did she say where she was going?"

"If you wouldn't mind coming with us sire, the Praetor will want to see you." says the sentry. He whistles, and two other spearmen come up from behind to bar his retreat.

Hm. Odd.

"All right," Leiryn mutters. As he starts to follow along, he glances over his shoulder to where he left his lookouts -- there shouldn't be any trouble from his own side, but it pays to be safe.

Leiryn is escorted through the shambles of the town, clearly having been recently sacked. Whereas the common grunts are camped without, the knights and squires are quartered within the houses and shops. He is taken up to the mead hall, a long, imposing structure atop the hill. Inside, firepits line the center, ringed by trestles and benches on either side. This is clearly where they're storing their loot, for a hillock of treasure occupies most of the left wing of the structure. On the right, hostages, bound hand and foot, and lashed to the pillars, a few of them gagged. Most of them are women, in fact almost all of them appear to be the ladies they were meant to escort. Terwynn is among them, without her armor or weapons, gagged very thoroughly. Audofleda herself is not bound, but sat beside the commander at the head table, with her hand reluctantly in his. The man in question appears to be in his thirties, with dark eyes and hair, in a green velvet jerkin. Flanked on either side of the pair, four knights in heraldic surcoats, from right to left, displaying a fox, a tower, a crescent, and a leviathan. The commander turns his head from Audofleda to greet the newcomer.

"He came lookng for Sir Terwynn, sire." explains the sentry.

"Did he, now? Thank you, you can return to your post" replies the commander. "Sir, I don't think we've had the pleasure of meeting, I am Sir Blains, Praetor of Levcomagus. And who might you be?"

Aaaaand there we go. I've never been less happy to be right.

It takes Leiryn only a few moments to recognize the decorated knights -- the commanders of those savage raiders from two years ago, when he was merely a squire. Their army's brutality shocked even a former bandit like himself, and their gruesome punishment at his mistress's hands only slightly less so. Mercifully, these knights seem not to recognize him, nor does their leader seem to be aware of who he is; were he recognized, he would likely already be captive or killed.

In the silence following the Praetor's words, he takes stock of the situation as best he can. Terrwyn is clearly indisposed, and while she is a formidable fighter, her lack of equipment would make freeing her right now borderline murderous. Audofleda has a hand on Blains' -- is she being held as a trophy as is too common, or did she sell the others out? Too early to tell. He still has the lookouts posted outside, and while he somewhat wishes he had brought backup here, they now have the element of surprise; he hopes, too, though he forgot to give them the explicit instruction, that one or two will see fit to split off and alert his other allies.

Familiar flames start to flicker in the corners of his eyes, but he forces the vision back to concentrate. For now, the best course of action he can see is to just keep talking. "I am Sir Leiryn, merely a fellow knight on this great invasion. Let's say I am aware of your reputation, Sir Blains. What are your intentions with Sir Terrwyn and these women?"

We interrupt this dramatic scene to return briefly to Bayeaux

As adventures are recounted, Eliver is caught up in re-living the excitement of the wild slaughter at Odon, the mad climb under a hail of stones at Caen, and the final storming of the fortress. He quite forgets to speak of anyone else's exploits, even Sir Miles.
