Persidius is not prepared for the sheer jubilation he witnesses.

"Yes, sire, I suppose nothing will come of it now, but surely Lindsey will be sour about it. His squire wanted to face me down right then."

He then decides to busy himself at the feast and at least have some meat and mulled wine. But he has a difficult time enjoying himself as he watches the room.

I go for newness. I will draw a (2?) card(s).

He accepts the challenge, and rises to his feet impudently, and uneasily; it can already be seen that he's been indulging the wine beyond his tolerance.

They go into the courtyard, and a fair dozen knights and ladies follow to watch. True to his word, Bleddyn's spear does not stutter. The fight lasts about thirty seconds, after which the boorish knight leaves his guard open for Bleddyn to sink his spearpoint into his opponents flesh, drawing first blood and winning the duel. The knight shrinks away with his friends to see to the wound, and later spends the rest of the feast at the far low end of the hall. The young maiden thanks Bleddyn profusely. The King's cup-bearer was one of the witnesses, and he can be seen afterwards to be relating to the king what happened, to his highness' amusement. Sir Bleddyn is beginning to garner a reputation for this kind of behavior.

He will receive a +1 to all future courtly rolls this year at Lincoln.

Persidius Card 1: A Test of Strength

One of the King's Household Knights, seated nearby, boasts of his strength and challenges Persidius to an arm-wrestling contest to prove it.

An incisive retort comes to Persidius's mind about how the strength of one's arm has little to do with one's prowess at arms, but he is in a good mood and sees no reason not to indulge the man.

"Very well then, Sir, let's see it," he says with a toast of his cup.

In spite of their appearances and his opponents assuredly superior strength, Persidius has him beat on technique and that's what carries the contest. Their hands shudder downwards and then slam against the table, Persidius' on top. A cheer goes up from the onlookers. His opponent blames the wine, and puts an end to his boasting.

Card 2:A Chance Encounter.

At some later point, a raven-haired beauty of generous proportions and noble bearing walks up and whispers in Persidius' ear.

Chaste or Lustful Challenge, decide which one you will favor.

He isn't one to boast so Persidius agrees that it could be the wine, "Another round some time later then," he toasts.

Later he's having a good time congratulating Sir Bleddyn for not only his win over the lout he challenged, but for standing up when no one else was the wiser as well, "You are a true, Christian knight, Barleyfield," he says to his countyman, "That lout was lucky you didn't meet him in the field."

That's when a certain, dark-haired lady appears. Before he knows it he's blushing and laughing.

"Here, have a drink with us," he says waving Elinor over to fill the lady's cup, "I've a game of tabula to handle first."

Very few people are really paying any attention, but those who are are astonished, even moreso those who know who know the identity of the lady, a category of personage that does not currently include Persidius. This beautiful young woman whispering licentiously in his ear to proposition him, is neither obeyed or refused, but instead told to wait until he's finished with his game, which owing to his unearthly charm in that one moment, she does, drinking the offered wine and watching the game for ten minutes. He then proceeds to win the match handily and then a few others, building up a small heap of silver, before finally calling it quits, cooly piling his winnings into his purse, and strolling casually off arm in arm with the young lady, to have his wicked way with her in the stable, as if he were escorting her to a grand ball.

Neither Scarik or I really knew how to interpret a succeeded chaste in this event card and then a critical flirt roll, so I went with Persi being James Bond.

EDIT: Scarik told me it would not be in character for Persidius to wait until after the coitus to exchange names, so here it is, in media res.

Long after the lacings have been untied and buckles unfastened, and the passionate rutting is underway in the hay, Persidius' sense of chivalry quickly rears its head, and his mouth interrupts his regularly scheduled program to ask her what her name is. It's Cornelia, she tells him. A strange feeling begins weighing down the pit of his stomach, but he can't place it's source, and the other feelings currently at play have a way of making him forget about it. He's Caius Persidius Pacilus, he tells her. She knows who he is, she replies. Afterwards, they straighten their hair and clothes to try and look presentable, Cornelia focuses entirely on herself with the aid of an expensive looking handmirror, leaving Persidius to cope with an somewhat disheveled appearance. They arrange to leave at different times, Persidius first. He runs into Sir Roderick exiting the great hall, with four servants carrying two immensely heavy chests between them. "Consider the matter settled m'boy, I've sold him his horses and armor back, ransomed his men, and for the bargain, pried nine-score pounds (£180) of hard silver from his steely coffers, to split between the three of you. I'll have it under guard until it makes it back to Salisbury." He chuckles, taking a proper look at Persidius. "You look like you've been enjoying yourself, been taking my advice I see. Ah, Lady Cornelia!" he says smiling and bowing as the noblewoman attempts to pass them and enter the hall. She is perfectly made up, unlike Persidius, and there is no innuendo in the Earl's tone when he greets her, seeming to make only common pleasantry. She stops to curtsy in turn, "Good day, Sir Roderick", and then passes into the hall. The strange, uncomfortable, feeling returns. When she's gone, Sir Roderick turns to Persidius and says "Well, the man was bound to get a few things right, wasn't he? Charming girl, just charming."

This is not the sort of thing Caius is prepared for. Not even a bit.

"She's Lindsey's daughter?" he asks decidedly off balance, "The duchess must be a handsome woman then to make up for him," he finishes hoping very much that his liegelord didn't notice the first part.

"Well, of course that's assuming...Well, I'll agree with you and leave it at that."

His eyes narrow and his head cocks a little. "I hope you haven't any designs on the girl, granted these Cumbric heathens are all so carefree with their virtues, but even loose propriety has it's limits. And there's Lady Pillarford to consider, ey? If I were you I'd give Lady Cornelia a wide berth while we're here. I'd rather I didn't have a second champion murdered by his wife a second year running!" he laughs. "Well don't just stand there, come on in out of the sun, you're not a sheave of corn." he plucks the straw from behind Persidius' ear and guides him back inside with a hand on the back.

Round 2 of the feast, which will carry events into the evening. Decide on actions, as before. Now would be a good time to mention the "Geniality" Score. It's essentially a modifier to all social skill and trait rolls you attempt, it reflects how well received you are by the other party guests.

Bleddyn +4:
+1 for Sitting Near the Salt
+1 for Fine Clothes
+1 for winning the duel.
+1 for Glory

Persidius +9:
+1 for Sitting Near the Salt
+2 for Noble Clothes
+1 For winning the arm wrestling contest.
+3 for the Chance Encounter Card.
+2 for Glory.

Bleddyn shifts focus to the spread before him and the beer. Oh, the beer. Everyone should have some of this lovely beer (but as Roderick said, not as good as Llewella's).

I shall indulge, roll Temperate plz

Bleddyn makes a point of summoning more beer for the revelers around him and making sure everyone has enough and is having a good time, having very little for hhimself.

Checkmark for Temperate earned.

"Good advice, sire," Persidius says as he is pushed in to the hall where, given his recent actions, he figures its time to put his ear to the ground and find out what's going on.

Gossip.

Bleddyn sighs contentedly to himself.

With all the fighting lately it's so wonderful to see people truly enjoying one of God's wonders: beer.

Venta

While we're waiting, if any of you would like to do some exploring or interacting in the city or buy some things while here, you're invited to do so.

Lincoln

It is now past night-fall.

Persidius hears nothing of his own most recent conduct, that is to say his rendezvous with the Duke's daughter. It's currently going unspoken of, but that's no guarantee that it's gone unnoticed. He hears that something happened to the Duke's knights, that someone who talked to someone who talked to someone else who has it on good authority heard that eight of them were stripped to the waist and lashed to their horses when the Duke returned with them four hours ago, and that two of them were dead. No one seems to know any specifics, but the current scuttlebutt is that two knights, whose identities are not yet fixed between versions, but speculated to be Uther's lackeys, rode out to challenge the Duke and his men, and having bested them all, took them prisoner. It seems that no one close to the incident has been talking about it, only guesswork and observation. Persidius hears from a serving girl that the Earl of Salisbury was seen having a pair of oaken chests hauled from the Duke's chamber to his own baggage train. This information doesn't seem to have reached the masses' attention, but considering how liberally he himself received it, it's only a matter of time before the identity of the challenger's is whittled down to Persidius and Bleddyn.

Persidius learns a few other things, for example he learns a thing or two about the Duke's family, no doubt information that he would pay dearly to have learned earlier. The squire who looked into Persidius' eyes with pure hatred was Sir Corneus' eldest son, a lad of fifteen called Lane. He has two daughters, the elder of which is Llindawse, and married Sir Sulien, the Count of Bedegraine, three years ago, although Sulien already has an heir from a prior marriage. The younger is Cornelia, just of marriageable age, and not yet betrothed to anyone. His brother, Sir Lindwr, is the Seneschal of Lincoln, and has been keeping the royal party fed and occupied this entire time. Lindwr has a sickly young lad called Derfel, who is currently notable only for having what most consider to be a silly name.

Further, he learns that it's thought the Duke sees the King as arrogant and power-mad. The feeling in Lincoln and among many northern lords is that Uther has not yet done enough to prove himself more than a bloodthirsty cattle-raider with delusions of grandeur. It's one thing to elicit fear, it's another to command respect. Uther wants to be a High King of Britain, but wants everything too easily.

The King and the Duke are now seated beside each other, and look to be carrying on politely. At some point, Uther rises and calls for silence.

"Salisbury, 'twas your men who retrieved the Sword of Victory last year, was it not? Are there any of those fellows now in our company?"
"Indeed Sire, Sir Bleddyn of Barleyfield, and Sir Cauius Persidius Pacilus, Lord Wayford, my king."
"Perhaps one of them would care to regale us once more, of that adventure! For some of our friends were not in audience for the first telling."

If you want to make a performance out of it, a compose roll is required, and then either Singing or Orate, depending on whether you intend it as a song, or something like blank verse.
Persidius still has a +9, and Bleddyn a +4

Persidius rises to answer the king's call. He has thought often about this strange tale and told it several times already, but this time he means, nay needs, it to be more like the epics of old.

So he begins with telling of the old man and his impressive, but lost, goat, and how they gave it chase up a hill and down into a glen where suddenly a bellowing giant appeared and took hold of their quarry...

*Foul was the | beast tall | strong as oak | with cer-tain | wroth it did | strike out at
Our comp-ny | then with | spear did he | Sir Ble-ddyn |drive his point | straight through
What sound | what howl | what dead-ly | scream did the | giant roar | when fast it
fell un-to |earth so rich | churned dis-turbed | such fo-ul |flesh rent | slashed and torn

With the monster felled who should appear but Merlin the Magician having cast aside his common disguise. The knights were baffled but the wizard had another task for them and so they followed into the wood where soon the familiar copse became somehow strange and dark and when they came to a narrow bridge they could feel something ancient and powerful deep within what should have been shallow water.

But no time they had to wonder long for before them was a still lake and the sudden sound of crashing hooves!

Heave and cut | swift it was | horse and man | fused one form | where should | must be two
Dance it did | prance ca-vort | four arms | swirled and cut | smashed slashed | crushed and torn
Fierce and fast |this wick -ed | thing drove | these knights | these stal-wart |souls be-fore
Long it was | long un-til | Terr -wyn lord | Lark's nest | smote it hard | down up on
Earth so slick | with gore...

A second monster slain they rush to the lake where they behold Merlin once more...

*In dactylic hexameter each line has 6 feet divided into 2 parts which start with a long syllable and then is followed by either another long or two short ones. There are more rules for those who want to master the form but its hard enough to do the basic forms in English that I was not brave enough to try.
