"Agreed," Persidius says to the Duke. "Let our quarrel be carried off by the wind and the ancient custom settle our debts."

For now he is keen to return the Duke to his seat and collect the ransoms owed. The blood price will be due later, likely once more in iron rather than gold.

Gritting her teeth and tightening her grip on her sword, Elspeth faces her foe yet again. While she wished she could have felled him with a single blow, that was just a whim; reality had other plans.

Balanced, sword again. If I fail to post promptly and all goes as usual, it's safe to assume it's still balanced/sword.

Leiryn gasps at the failed impact, furious at his clumsiness and already in panic mode. With only seconds to make his next move, he weighs his options and starts to go for his sword. However, halfway through the motion, his hand curls into a fist and he finds himself bearing down on his enemy instead.

Chancing the aggressive punch for this one, hopefully it doesn't kill me

Miles catches the warrior's ax head hooked over the rim of his shield, and tears it from his grip with a sharp jerk upwards. Only a moment later, Eliver throws his right shoulder behind his shield and throws that, with his significantly smaller mass behind it, into the saxon's own shield, thrusting his sword around and into the warrior's belly with his left hand at the same time. The ram and the wound together cause him to slip onto deck, now slick with more than seawater. The battle now at an end, there is nothing and no one to prevent Eliver's sword-tip as it plunges down and up into his belly like a needle through a handkerchief.

With a long chest-crossing windup and the guttural war cry of a womanly warrior, Elspeth swings down and cleaves cleanly through the cur's neck. In a moment of grim and unusual synchronicity, Terwynn does the exact same thing at the exact same time. Both heads topple off and then roll across the deck with the swaying of the ship.

Once Leiryn begins punching, it is not an easy thing for him to stop. He climbs atop the ceorl, drops his shield, and puts both hands toward the endeavor, swinging one after the other with the full force of his pivoting chest. When the fog clears, the battle is clearly over, he is sheening with sweat, his hands are bruised and bleeding, and the man's face is unrecognizable.

The Salisbury knights stand upon the deck of a saxon longship, now completely devoid of living Saxons. Not far off, the rest of the enemy fleet has fared only slightly better, and now withdraws north with heavy casualties, seemingly headed to the mouth of the Colne river. A victorious cheer goes up from the other ships. A significant portion, started from the same ship and carried to the others, take up the chant "Wylye! Wyley! Wylye!". They are right to do so, no other ship has done this well, to counter-board a ship twice it's size and massacre all aboard, while taking no casualties. From not far off, Prince Madoc raises his own bloodied sword in salute, whether it is directed towards the entire ship or Sir Miles personally, it is ambiguous. No cheer goes up in Leiryn's name, but a few knights and several of the sailors take it in turn to personally pat him on the back for his keen aim in dispatching the captain.

The longboat is quickly stripped of all its valuables, and once the vanquishers have taken what they can from their vanquished, the rest is shared commonly. Thus each knight (and Leiryn) receives £1 extra.

Miles takes £2, 10s from the Berserker, 5s from the Ceorl (£3, 15s)
Elspeth takes 5s loot from each of the two Ceorls (£1, 10s)
Leiryn takes £5 from the Captain, 5s from each Ceorl (£6, 10s)
Eliver takes £2, 10s from the Thegn, 15s from the Warrior. (£4, 5s)
Terwynn takes 15s from the Warrior, 5s from the Ceorl (£2)

Once the ship is cleared of valuables, it is cast adrift and torches are flung into it, setting both the vessel and the bodies of it's crew alight.

Before long, a horn is sounded and the drums are beat. The fleet sails up the Colne river to pursue and put a end to the Essex fleet. They find the longships drawn up along the far end of a beach that closely precedes the ancient fortress town of Camulodunum, once the capitol of Roman Britain, now called Colchester by its new Saxon overlords. The Saxons have drawn up a battle line in front of their ships, with the clear intent to give the Cymri another hard fight for their ships before retreating behind the ingenious roman walls. at their back. The Prince accepts their challenge, has the fleet draw up on the near side of the beach, and orders the knights into a matching battle line, placing himself in the front and center.

This encounter will be treated as a Skirmish, and will be using the new skirmish system I've laid out in the OOC thread.
Step 1: You declare your Approach (Bold, Orderly, Hesitant)
Step 2: I determine enemies.
Ste 3: You declare your stance (Aggressive, Balanced, Defensive), and whether you want to Invoke a passion.
Step 4: We do two rounds of combat.

Victorious, Terrwyn high fives Sir Elspeth. She joins in the chant for Miles's home and smiles in a congratulatory manner at Leiryn, trying not to wince at the state of his hands. She tries to count the loot she has amassed so far but very soon they find the cowardly ships. Terrwyn is one of the first to jump off as they dock and rush toward the enemies in a fit of rage. She finds herself surrounded by a berserker and ceorl. Fearlessly, she raises her blade.

The man below him finally stops moving. Eliver looks up. There's no-one left to fight. The deck of the longship runs with blood, bodies lying every way he looks. He lets his blood-fouled blade fall, and looks to Miles first of all: somewhat pale, not quite none the worse, but still standing.

"How could you do something so reckless?" he demands, but embraces his lover as he does so, carefully, for fear of causing him any more pain. Only later does it occur to him that it's fortunate that in the wild excitement of newly minted victory it's unlikely that anyone else was paying close enough attention to think his concern excessive.

He looks around, counting up his friends, Terrwyn and Elspeth, Pamigen, and Leiryn just standing up. Indeed, he cannot seem to see any dead or badly wounded fighters not in Saxon gear.

As Madoc's forces are making ready at Camulodunum, Eliver finds Miles, "You aren't going to fight this time, are you?" He gives him little time to respond, "You mustn't, for my sake, Miles." He suddenly grins, "You've got to save some Saxons for the rest of us, it's only fair."

A short while later, with Miles safely among those Cymri remaining at the boats, Eliver takes his place in the line of battle. Terrwyn is near him, but not for long. Just as the advance is beginning, the female knight charges ahead with an incoherent yell of rage.

Not another one. Are all his comrades going to lose their minds? Terrwyn is no Miles: she is as brave as any , but he fears she may not have the sheer strength to survive such a perilous tactic - and she took a wound at the Blackwater too. But he is powerless to help her, save by doing his part to hold the line and hope they can win another decisive victory, before his friend is overwhelmed.

As the armies close across the sodden beach, Eliver squares off with what he anticipates to be his next opponent, a Thegn. The to half of her face is obscured by her helmet, but he can tell she is a woman. Such a thing is rare but not unheard of in Saxon society, most commonly the wives and daughters of chieftains. As he closes to bear his sword against her, he can see that her hair is not flaxen, but brown like his own. Most probably the daughter of a "welsh" slave taken for a concubine in the conquest. Whatever her patrimony, it's clear what side she's chosen. The she-Thegn, for her part, ducks under her shield to defend herself. He thinks he might have heard her shout something, a boast, a taunt, a plead for mercy, exactly what is drowned out by the roar of battle and the hatred of the saxon race he feels pounding in his chest.

Eliver loses sight of Terrwyn as the battle is joined. And then he loses sight of everything except the tall, mailed Saxon noble in front of him, drawing his - no, her sword. El raises his own blade and shield, and hopes he can send one more to meet his maker today without suffering too much himself. If a woman warrior proves herself as good as a man, far be it from he to treat her any differently.

Back on board the boats, Miles chafes. He could fight on, he's sure of it. Maybe his wound is a little sore, but that hadn't stopped him last time, had it?

But he had seen the fear in Eliver's eyes, although he had tried to conceal it. Eliver had begged him, and he could never refuse the small man anything.

The slight daze he feels on his feet and the pounding pain in his hands barely register to Leiryn. For just a moment during his last fight, he felt his blood boil and his foe's blood charge him up. For just a moment, there was nothing except his fists raining down on the Saxon's face. For just a moment, he felt like Arcadia must have.

But that has passed, or at least been shoved down enough to be ignored for the time being. Returning to his cold calmness, Leiryn sizes up the enemy force. Intimidating as this final bout may be, he faces forward completely drained of fear -- whether out of bravery or the surreality of the entire voyage, he doesn't bother to figure out.

Orderly

(had a much longer and fancier RP in the works but couldn't find a way to make it work right at this juncture and didn't want to hold things up over writer's block, so I'll just try to get it right after the battle's over should I still be alive)

For Leiryn, the ceorl -- no matter how different he looks -- is exactly the same as the one whose face he destroyed hours prior.

Terwynn rushes ahead like a woman possessed, smiting a Ceorl and hacking at the Berserker beside him. It barely scratches him. His great battleaxe bites into Terwynn's midsection, and she falls to the ground as consciousness ebbs from her.

Leiryn blunders and fails to parry the Ceorl's spear thrust before it sails past his shield, mercifully grazing his cheekbone for no more than a scratch and a future scar. He returns the favor by batting the spear-shaft away with his shield and breaking the Ceorl's exposed arm with an underhand chop.

Elspeth strikes down a warrior and then decidedly puts the ceorl behind him on the back-foot, dealing little damage but denting the battle line nonetheless.

Eliver crosses swords with the saxon maid, and finds himself on equal, almost symmetrical footing. Strangely, she makes no move to injure him, only blocking and parrying. She's still shouting something, but cannot be understood over the roar of battle. At last, Eliver gets in a fleshwound and causes her to trip backwards, falling flat on her back. Her fingers let go of her sword, and as he raises his arm to finish her, he is halted. She frantically tugs at the faceguard with her newly free swordhand, and lifts it up to reveal her face, a face he knows well. It is his sister's face, his elder sister, Sir Elaine, who he has not had word of in three years, now among a saxon shieldwall, lying before him in saxon armor outside of Camulodunum. She pants and watches his next move carefully, panic in her eyes.

Around them, the battle has been decisively won. There are five dead Saxons for every one knight wounded. The remaining half of the saxon forces flee behind the safety of the walls. The sailors file out from behind the knights, and set about burning the ships. Madoc doesn't bother making any rounds of the men this time, rather shouting taunts up at the town ramparts with his bodyguards, telling them that their throats, their coffers, and their women should give thanks to god that he has better things to do than order the town sacked. After about five minutes of this, arrows begin whizzing over his head, and the prince withdraws to the boats.

Terwynn is given the aid of chirurgeon, who manages to treat and dress the wound to her abdomen properly. Leiryn has his knuckles are cleaned, given a balm, and bound in bandages, and a small piece of gauze to hold up to the scratch on his cheekbone, which seems to stem the bleeding in a matter of minutes.

Eliver's sister is at his mercy, a Ceorl is at Leiryn's, and a Warrior is at Elspeth's.

Everyone receives £1 in common loot.

For a moment, Eliver of Woodford is lost for words.

For a moment, conflicting emotions strive in his heart. He stays his stroke, but does not lower his blade.

Elaine is alive, and well. This past year and more he has feared her dead or in wretched captivity, yet here she is living and fighting as a Saxon. She did him no harm, when chance or fate brought them together in battle, and he strove to wound or kill her - thank the Lord he had so little success. He never thought to have to fight against his own sister. Yet she is his flesh and blood still, the elder sister he played with, loved, looked up to.

He drops his sword, and stretches out his arm to help her up.

"Elaine... I never thought to see you in such guise. How? Why?"
