Now that is quite a ride. A guy so screwed up that even ED lambasting him is not uncalled for, ol' Quincy demonstrating even he had more standards than your average love-shy and lots of testimonials for (formerly?) longstanding singles.
I'd have been one of the latter, had I discovered TCS (and this thread) back then.
Those who suggested that therapy was a perfectly valid option are right on the money - mine started back in mid-2013, and it kickstarted many significant changes on my life, culminating in the relationship I'm in right now.
Also: the old cliché about being content with yourself first holds true. With the right state of mind you can suddenly find yourself thinking "seriously, fuck this" and head towards action, failure be damned.
The path to wisdom does, in fact, begin with a single step.
Where people go wrong is in ignoring all the thousand other steps that come after it. They make the single step of deciding to become one with the universe, and for some reason forget to take the logical next step of living for 70 years on a mountain and a daily bowl of rice and yak-butter tea that'd give it any kind of meaning. While evidence says that the road to hell is paved with good intentions, they’re probably all first steps.
