I happen to think of athleticism as a certain combination of endurance, agility, strength, competitiveness, and power, and less of whether one has entered a competition for something. I always fancied myself as something close to athletic: I can run 5 miles, sprint faster then damn near anyone I've ever met, am very competitive, and can deadlift 405 if I'm having a good day (Hopefully the latter happens with more regularity, like it used to). Probably helps that I played football, soccer, baseball and basketball before joining up with the military. I tend to think of an athlete as possessing a blend of qualities, in other words, rather than conforming to a strict definition of simply someone who plays a sport. If you tell me the average pro baseball player is more an athlete than I am, I'd find the notion strange.
