So, how does this whole "humanity" venture end?

Postby DamianaRaven » Sat Sep 16, 2017 4:36 am

I've enjoyed this website for years, because it pretty thoroughly explores every possible fate of our species, from the highly probable to the "a'ight, you've smoked enough of that shit." What's your prediction for the future of humankind?

Sooner or later the earth will get hit by a massive space rock or some shit, the sun will eventually kill off all life on this planet, and even the universe itself will die one day.

Through fire or ice.

With a devilish twinkle in his eye.
With his hand-picked flowers,
And his feel-good powers,
He made all the girls blush and sigh.

From what he's tasted of desire, Mr. Frost holds with those who favor fire.

I really wish Exit Mundi hadn't attached specific years to some of the near-future scenarios. Specific years that by now have long since passed, like 2008 (apocalyptic oil crash) or 2010 (gray goo). Takes away a lot of the horror factor.

"If it were all so simple! If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them; but the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?"

I would put my money down on a combination of global warming and overpopulation leading to nuclear armageddon. Maybe a 100 years plus from now, resources will restrict, our population will have continued to balloon unsustainably, and that will be when things get really dangerous. We will be consuming far quicker than Earth can replenish (a line we crossed in August this year) and eventually a combination of that and the impact of global warming will make people desperate.

Countries with weak security and nuclear weapons (think Pakistan) and even those that arent could see those weapons taken by a apoplectic populace and utilized against other countries they see as a source of the problem, kicking off a nuclear free for all. Or, also totally possible, in their desperation, some nuclear armed country sees its own version of Nero ascend, and they kickoff the end of the world.

Coming in second would be a supervirus. Third would be a sudden cosmic calamity. Dark Horse entry would be death by AI.

I see advanced AI taking over as the next step in human evolution, if we ever get that far.

GAH! You know that site!

I choose insanity! or Sex with robots!

But, if super natural causes also count, I'm partial to the "Evangelion's Tang and Release" ending myself.

I remember a story that came out in the news about 20 years ago, talking how there could be a near miss in '28(!).
then a few days worth of stories about what people would do if they knew the world was ending.
then cue up the NASA people again with a "oops!" story that they fucked up the math a little and it won't be coming that close. our bad, so sorry.
yeah. whatever.
we're a speck in the galaxy, never mind the universe. but all that stuff flying around out there doesn't care.

I'm reasonably sure this is a recording from the end of the world.
