I can't believe how long I've gone without appreciating M. C. Escher. When I was a kid my elementary school had a mini-exhibit of his tessellations pictures, but I mostly knew him for his stairs pictures. And stairs pictures for Escher like the melting watches for Dali: so overused in conjunction with his name that I figured it was all he had to offer. Fortunately, I saw my first Dali exhibit around puberty and had that view corrected, but I've never been to an Escher exhibit.

However I've recently rediscovered my childhood obsession with polyhedra, and in the process stumbled across some of the work he's done that incorporates them, and it's amazing.

He also did sculpture, as with "Icosaëder"

And check out "Mosaic I" and "Mosaic II":

Holy fuck! Escher certainly rivals Dali—and may even have replaced him—as my favorite artist!

What I like about these is the clear crispness of form and color. The quality of abstraction makes them fascinating to look at, but I think most importantly the play of light in the paintings is fantastic. Feels so real.

@Tuli:
You may be right about their brilliance, but to me they look like migraines in painting form.

I accept that this is a slightly unusual thing to be posting on the internet late at night, but insomnia gets what insomnia wants.

Giambologna's statue Ratto delle Sabine contains what is by far and away the best stone bum I have ever seen in my life.

Seriously. The way it's slightly squashed on one side by her bodyweight, and the little indents of his fingers on the skin. That is a chunk of marble up there, a hard stone, made to look like a soft and jiggly part of a body exactly as it would naturally appear under those particular forces and actions. I am amazed by the artistic skill in the small details of this piece. It's not limited to the Sabine woman's moneymaker, but that's the single most impressive part for me.

It might be more appropriate to file this under "technically impressive art" because it doesn't exactly hit me in the heart like most of the above examples would seem to for the people who posted them, but I'm not starting a new thread just to share marble cake with all of you.

"Tusser, they tell me, when thou wert alive,
Thou, teaching thrift, thyselfe couldst never thrive.
So, like the whetstone, many men are wont
To sharpen others, when themselves are blunt."

Anyone who has any kind of opinion fucking disgusts me.
