[New to You!] PALADIN: Knights of Charlemange

Postby Scarik » Wed Jul 04, 2018 10:40 pm

Its Scarik again, inveterate GM and thread lurker. As some know I have a long-running King Arthur Pendragon game on another forum and we just reached Arthur pulling the sword from the stone. I'm not active there anymore aside from a few games so we decided to migrate elsewhere.

But we already have a strong Pendragon game here and this is a small place so instead of confusing observers with another one we will change to PALADIN.

The rules are similar and you can think of P:KoC as 6th edition KAP. I houserule everything but if you are following along with Cpt._Funkotron's game we talk about rules changes frequently so will be pretty close at all times.

And because my game load is pretty high the cunning and ruthless Roobeastie will be co-GMing with me. Or I will be with her. My job is to handle logistics, her's is setting development. We will conspire on the rest.

The only thing set in stone right now is that the game will begin in 768, the year Charlemagne is crowned, and that the setting will be much more egalitarian than history. The default assumption of society includes gender roles but these are regularly ignored by people so that sex, gender and sexuality play little part in what roles one can take.

So there will be traditionalists who hew close to the period mores but plenty of women knights and even priests for instance. Also useful to note is that celibacy is not required of priests in the 9th century and indeed most are married.

If you are interested reply below about what your character might be like.

We start as squires? I'm thinking a younger son of a minor vassal. Ambitious, with a mean streak. Hoping to make a household knight, and conspire his way from there.

We're working on how character generation will start, and more specifically what people will be allowed to do, and we'll keep you updated as we get all that sorted.

Also, for those of you who have played with Scarik in games before, he taught me everything I know, so be forewarned. :D

Tentative interest. I am unsure of the backstory or what sort of characters we'd need.

We do lots of discussion there for all the TCS games I am in or run.

We should have a chargen primer up tonight as well and I am working on a google-sheet character sheet to handle the sheets, and I will also make a game sheet to track families and such as I always do. ^^

That gives us 7 if everyone sticks to it. The game who died for this one to live started with 8.

Chargen

Step 1: Personal Data

Name:
Age:
Cultures (in order of commonality):
Common: Frank, Briton, Gascon, Roman, Visigoth, Lombard
Rare: Dane, Saxon, Persian, Saracen, Byzantine

Homeland: By Culture
Father's Class (Son Number): Lord (4), Officer (3), Banneret (2) or Vassal (1)
Blessing: None
Home: Bastogne
Liege Lord: Duke Thierry, Count of Bastogne

Step 2: Family

Characteristic: Any
Patron Saint: Any

Step 3: Youth
Father: Lord, Officer*, Banneret or Vassal
*Choose which officer and which lord he served.
Page Training: Great Noble's Court or Great Monastery
Cultureal Modifiers: Per Culture
Homeland Modifiers: Per Homeland

**************************

Obviously the Franks are the most common since you are in the Ardennes at a Frankish court. But all the commonly listed Cultures are allied to the Franks and thus fit right in.

The rarer ones are of two kinds. The Byzantines and Persians are allied/not enemies so this would be a friendly marriage alliance or return. Say your mother married someone of this culture and they decided to send you as a page to your grandfather's lord/court.

Danes, Saxons, Saracens are enemies and your parent of this culture would have been a hostage to ensure the peace. But that is no impediment to success as can be seen from Prince Ogier, the Dane. If you are a Dane then chances are your parent was taken along with him and raised at King Pepin's court. They sent you to Prince Charlemagnes tutor Duke Thierry to further improve their standing.

Once you have that stuff sorted we can get into generating your stats.

EDIT to ADD. A silly oversight but all of the PCs will have a common grandfather who was a Frank. His precise status is still not determined but he was definitely a Lord. He can be either a Paternal or Maternal grandparent to make your choices work.

I don't have the book, so I took the family characteristics from Pendragon. I assume there is something similar in Paladin?

In spite of saying all week that I don't have time... I caved.

I haven't got many details worked out yet but I'm intending to play the youngest son of a Saracen lord, presently a hostage to his father's good behaviour.

Glad to have you. ^^ (please ignore any evil laughter you may hear)

EDIT

Mind changed. Every D6 counts as a 4.

You can roll your D3s or count them all as 2s.

Customization

The character sheet now has the base values on it. You can modify these a bit to fit what you want.

Attributes:
These add up to 55. You may respend the points however you like so long as every value is no lower than 5 and no higher than 15. After that you get 5 points to spend among them with the limit that no value may go above 18 at this time.

Traits:
Each trait is a 10. These will be modified quite a bit but you may alter them as you like with the restriction that none may be lower than 7 nor higher than 13 and the entire left side must not exceed 130 total points, and that each pair sums to 20.

Passions and Attitudes*:
These are all derived. You can't change them at this stage.

Skills:
This is the big one and has a few caveats for balance.
What you can raise it to depends on the base value shown.

0, 1 or 1/2 DEX: You may not alter this skill at this time.
4: Max 6
7: Max 9
8: Max 12
11: Max 15

In order to raise any skill value you must reduce the value of a skill in the same , or a more knightly, category by 2 for each point increase.

From most to least knightly the skills are: Combat > Courtly > Common > Scholarly.

Example: To raise Sword by 2 points you must deduct 4 points total among other combat skills. You may not reduce other skills categories for this. To raise Folklore though you may deduct points from any skill since it is a Common skill.

*A new thing that shows how that person or group thinks of you.
