I did NOT see a "death threat" there. Saying that someone doesn't deserve to live is very harsh and even a little shitty, but it certainly doesn't constitute any kind of threat.

I don't feel a mod voice is worth derailing a thread. Let's stay on topic, please.

If you really want to continue the discussion of mod voice/was it warranted was it not feel free to in this thread.

Or make a thread in rules and faqs.

Now onto the topic at hand. I am not remotely surprised at how the vote went.

New York AG to sue FCC over net neutrality repeal

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is suing to block the FCC net neutrality repeal. This is also expected. The net neutrality repeal will probably be in limbo for at least a year, if not longer. At the minimum, it will hopefully be blocked until Dems can potentially come to in the 2018 midterms and pass a bill stopping net neutrality from being repealed. Even better would be if it remained blocked until 2020 when we (hopefully) get a better president who appoints a better FCC chairman who isn't openly corrupt and disgusting.

So to you fellow Americans, this isn't the time to give up, but rather the time to keep the pressure on. The worst thing that can happen right now is for people to get lazy when it seems like Net Neutrality isn't really going anywhere, only for it to be unblocked and the rug yanked out from under our feet. Continue to keep up with net neutrality news and events, if not outright activism.

So I saw a chart showing what you get for an internet contract in the US and I gotta say that net neutrality was already dead.

Regardless of how you feel about greed, without it we wouldn't even have the internet or in fact most things that people take for granted.
As far as I'm concerned nobody actually deserves to live, they just do. It's not something that can be earned. Whether or not someone actually deserves to die now rather than later is entirely a matter of opinion and if I were you I'd keep those opinions to myself.

If Ajit Pai is paid off by Verizon as everybody is saying, wouldn't a form of protest be to switch cellular providers?

Granted, Verizon might be the only option in some places that works, but in a lot of areas, you'll still get effective coverage with AT&T or Sprint or T-Mobile.

Just one of those Sunday AM thoughts.

Re: Goodbye, net neutrality

So a couple of updates. (And much as I hate to link Gizmodo articles, it's the most comprehensive one I could find at this late hour.)

In addition to the Attorneys General lawsuit, there will be numerous other suits and -- indeed -- a vote in the Senate over a bill that would block this and stop it from happening again. The vote only needs a simple majority to win the block, which should be childishly simple, and while the odds of it either getting past the current House or Trump's veto aren't as high, I can't help but agree with the article's optimism over the continued bipartisan backlash.

At the very least, even if the bill fails completely, there's still the prominent stalling in the courts -- and all that needs to happen, even without a win, is a long enough stall or a destructive enough failure to get people surging to the midterm votes. Frankly, I no longer fear Ajit Pai's greasy, shit-stained fingers closing around our collective throats nearly as much. So long as the fight doesn't slack, he'll eventually have to slump back to the smoldering brimstone pits from whence he came.

You speak of his eventual return to the private sector (likely Verizon) as if it's something he's going to "slump back" to in a way that isn't going to further enrich him. Plot your metaphors a bit differently, is what I'm saying.

The thing is, a lawsuit doesn't inherently stall government action. The courts would have to issue a preliminary injunction against the government, which usually requires that the plaintiffs "must show a likelihood of success on the merits" of the case. Winter v. Natural Resources Defense Council, 555 U.S. 7, at 29 (quotes ommitted) (2008). I think that plaintiffs probably won't succeed on the merits, so an injunction doesn't seem likely. This is really the legislature's problem to solve now.

And the current collection of law-makers in Congress are not shy about going against the grain of public opinion on issues. I believe it's fair to say the just-passed tax overhaul is not enjoying majority support amongst the masses, likewise chopping elements of ACA which, left unintended, will effectively kill the whole shebang. Net neutrality is another unpopular - but probably safe - gamble.

Over a rather short period of time, K Street has won, and won large. The effects of these changes - tax, health, net - will take quite a while to be fully realized. The narrative of, "Failed Obamacare, failed, over-regulated, economic policy, failed foreign policy, SAD!" will fit even as more immediate (one- to two-year) repercussions become apparent. Republicans will claim that short-term pain is needed to right the ship which Obama put on a listing path.

This is deeply cynical, and assumes that the favorite pastime of American voters - the great one-third who aren't married to one of two teams - is following the shiny squirrel.

Which leads me to my point; I figure there'll be another shiny squirrel after the New Year. I don't know what it'll be, but it will be something distracting enough to move attention away from the blunt-force aspects of this far-Republic administration. A mighty Twitter gust of wind in some foreign direction, or maybe a war on the newly discovered weed/poppies in Afghanistan/bunny rabbits in Australia.

Again, I'm as cynical as a breath of fart-air, but I don't see net neutrality surviving as an issue into the mid-terms.

Maybe the Dem's will surprise me, in a good way. Probably not.

EDIT: *unattended... as-in things which tend to go from bad to worse, not unintended... woops.

KleinerKiller wrote:It's happening.

No more frills, no more tiptoeing around it, no more slippery slopes -- Ajit "Soul Sodomy" Pai has announced the plan to repeal net neutrality altogether and hand over full control to ISPs, and will pursue enacting it on December 14th. Not everyone on the FCC is on board with this, and massive protests will hopefully put pressure in the other direction, but this smug piece of subhumanity will never let his vendetta go and there's a real chance he'll win out.

This is an all-or-nothing deadline. In 23 days, the internet as we know it may cease to exist for good.

Sorry I literally can't afford to be as flippant as you about this.

KleinerKiller wrote:With ISPs in control of the internet, I expect even less voter turnout in the future, because it'll be much harder / nigh-impossible to start a widespread movement that has any chance of changing things when they can simply slow your sites and accounts down to be virtually unusable. No, if it passes, net neutrality can never come back. Ever. By its very nature it's the last trigger pull. That's why now is such a pivotal time to stop things from getting permanently fucked up, and that's why I cannot abide by anyone being pessimistic at this stage.

I disagree. It's easy enough to love Trump when all his bullshit is affecting OTHER people, but when it comes into their own house and takes away their precious porn... *laughs meanly*

People are going to lazily and ignorantly let this happen, but then when the actual effects of it become apparent, there will be an ENORMOUS outcry and backlash. People (even - nay ESPECIALLY - the kind of morons who worship Trump) aren't going to want to suddenly start paying for multiple things they've been getting free. Poor people can't afford it and rich people wouldn't be rich if they just gave their money to any and every shyster who wanted it.

...hmm.

So, guys, has it happened yet? Have we been thrown back to the dark ages of...let me check...early 2015?

Until 2015, there were no clear legal protections requiring net neutrality. In 2015, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) reclassified broadband as a Title II communication service with providers being "common carriers", not "information providers", in a party-line 3–2 vote.[3][4][5][6]

Ugh, remember 2015? When liberal websites, porn sites, and filesharing services were all unusable because the ISPs throttled their traffic to hell? When the average Joe couldn't make money on the internet because ISPs charged an extra $50 for viewing any site other than Google or Facebook? Remember how it was impossible for the Obama FCC to reclassify broadband providers as common carriers because the ISPs just shut down any website that promoted the idea? Truly, it was an apocalyptic hellscape. I can't believe that subhuman vermin Ajit Pai wants us to go back to those horrible old days.
