You know what, that was a bit too much. But who can blame me? This is the internet, the most important thing ever!

Pai just doin' his job. Following orders. Like a good, what's it called?

Anys ways why doesn't anybody in an the opposing party bother to point out that Trump and the gang are trying to put us so far behind other countries like oh idk China and Russia that we'll probably be subservient to them at some point because their citizens could have better information access than we will and we're fucking doing this by choice people, collectively we have chosen to ruin our future so companies that don't give a fuck about this place except to bleed it of cash can make a quick buck off of our stupidity, is this what we want the history books to write about the U.S.A. in the Capitalism chapter?

aviel wrote:Second, the problem here isn't that ISP's are being propped up by government cronyism. Because laying down wire is expensive, it's a business with a high barrier to entry, meaning that there aren't a lot of players involved. There are so few that most tend to have local monopolies, without other broadband competitors.

In a functioning market, if ISPs tried to take advantage of deregulation and charge consumers more to access different sites, a competitor would come along and offer a better all-in-one package. Given the current state of the broadband market, however, that isn't going to happen. If an ISP doesn't offer a plan you like, you can move, and that's about it. In the absence of a viable market solution, we need net neutrality rules to ensure that ISPs don't engage in anticompetitive business practices.

But getting rid of net neutrality and giving more power to the ISPs that have already ensured that they have what basically amounts to monopolies over large parts of the country's internet access is good for the free market because it'll spur on competition in the areas they've already made it impossible to compete in.[/sarcasm] (in case it wasn't already VERY clear that I'm being sarcastic as fuck)

(The sad thing is that people really are using that argument, albeit without the sarcastic parts.)

It's probably futile because Ajit Pai is a feculent wretch who would sell out all of humanity for an extra nickel and much of the Trump administration is firmly on his side, but please call your local representatives and protest this for as long as possible.

Yeah, unfortunately this battle is almost certainly going to be lost at the FCC. But Congress can alway amend the Communications Act to classify ISPs as common carriers by law, rather than leaving it up to the FCC. Call your legislators.

I'm pretty neutral on this. I'm pretty opposed to bandaid solutions, because people will just treat the lowered standard the bandaid represents as a natural resting point to either progressively build on or conservatively tend back to. See: all the arguments about Obamacare completely crowding out any sort of argument for lower medical bills because PEOPLE ARE DYING RIGHT NOW DAMNIT.

Ajit Pai has perfectly valid points. "ISPs have a natural monopoly, ISP regulations make an already high barrier of entry even higher, if you want to fix this, reduce the barriers to entry."

Then he has ideologically informed points, "making the net neutral has no advantage here because we don't think it's been abused enough to warrant it". That's not exactly an objectively wrong thing. People who want government guarantees of net neutralities and don't trust the de facto monopolies of the ISPs to not abuse their power and who don't want to wait for them to start abusing it before legislating will say no, people who still believe the imbalance is temporary will say yes.

When both Ajit Pai and his opponents think legislation is the answer to this, I find it amusing that people are so completely angry that they're literally threatening to kill him over this. Net neutrality's pretty important, but it's not the apocalyptic SOPA/PIPA/PATRIOT style atrocity the news is portraying it as.

also NATIONALIZE YOUR FUCKING INTERNET CABLES AND HEALTH SERVICES AMERICA,WHY DO YOU LOOK FOR CAPITALISTIC SOLUTIONS TO EVERYTHING.
Do national hospitals even exist in america? why doesn't the government participate in the free market? as an institution with basically infinite budget tolerance levels, they'd be the perfect market value regulator.

While I don't have much to say that KK and the rest of you haven't already said, I do have the immense pleasure of being tasked with calling my local representative.
For Wisconsin.

... In the 1st District.
I'm not sure if I'm prepared for the idea of calling Paul Ryan and bitching at him about the internet.

No, and that's part of the problem.

I've actually had people argue that roads shouldn't be funded by the states and should be private. -_-

If people need society to be Fallout 3 just to feel self-important, why not just give up? Who needs to be self-important, anyway?

So the FCC process has gotten even fucking shadier and more corrupt thanks to the revelation of how many anti-neutrality comments the agency received turned out to be spambots, and how many complaints against the repeal have straight-up disappeared from their records.

Given the amount of pressure from all sides and now internally, I'm fairly optimistic about the vote either not passing or getting swiftly overturned, but please continue to call your reps and do everything else in your power.
