BJP won a majority in Karnataka. Congress is trying to form a coalition with Janta Dal, but the BJP governor has to accept it.

Care to give some context for ignorant foreigners? Who are BJP and Janta Dal? What's their political leaning and all that stuff?
I know I could research this, but I'd rather hear it from a normal citizen (who is also a member of TCS). Also, I'm lazy.

The BJP are the Hindu Nationalist party. The Indian National Congress is a national party of socialist origin that's basically always been the major center left party. The Janta Dal is a regional People's Party in Karnataka. Karnataka is one of the five states of South India, which is a linguistically and culturally distinct block from the rest of India. We have a much heavier emphasis on regional parties down here unlike the north which almost always goes directly national between the INC and the BJP. However, we've been going through a BJP wave recently where they're winning states left and right. INC has basically been completely beaten back to bastions of congress strength right now.

The most recent election is the Karnataka Assembly election (the state lower-house) and INC was already weak because they were incumbent. Now of the 222 seats, BJP won 104, congress won 76, JD(S) won 39.Giving an INC/JD(S) coalition the majority. However, since it's this close, the BJP says they should be allowed to form the government as the majority vote party. The person making the decision is the Governor, who is a BJP politician from a BJP stronghold and is almost definitely going to fudge it in their favour.

The BJP's asked for a week to be able to "prove" their majority. A week they're going to use to sow dissatisfaction in the INC and JD ranks and try to get them to defect or abstain from showing up to form the government.

The BJP winning this many states is a really bad sign, since they're pretty horrible policy wise. They're literally descended from the movement that killed Gandhi and they honestly want to make India a Hindu Pakistan. They're historically revisionist assholes who've presided over some of the worst race riots in Indian history.

Here's our wonderful PM from the second riot article there.
Then-Chief Minister Narendra Modi declared that the attack on the train had been an act of terrorism, and not an incident of communal violence.[60] Local newspapers and members of the state government used the statement to incite violence against the Muslim community by claiming, without proof,[57] that the attack on the train was carried out by Pakistan's intelligence agency and that local Muslims had conspired with them to attack Hindus in the state. False stories were also printed by local newspapers which claimed that Muslim people had kidnapped and raped Hindu women.[61]

See also: "Saffron Terror"

Their parent party the RSS and its branches are sort of horrifying. They convert muslims to hinduism and call it "homecoming" (Because all Indians are Hindus you see, the fact that they converted literally a millenium ago doesn't matter) and use the fact that it's not literally the BJP doing it as a shield while the BJP does fucking nothing to stop this. They try to fucking rewrite the textbooks so it becomes "clear" that India is Hindu and Muslims are imperialist invaders who became rich off india's back and converted all the hindus while burning down every single temple in existence. They fucking don't even deny Ancient Indian Aircrafts and this bullshit's actually fucking found its way into textbooks under them. Not to mention that time Modi destroyed our ability to use cash for two fucking years to somehow stop black money. ATMs wouldn't have cash anywhere in cities for /months/ because we weren't fucking able to replace the money on time as would be obvious to anyone that isn't a BJP asshole.

Hungary recycles used alt-right figures the US threw away. Steve Bannon gave an address at a government-sponsored conference about the future of Europe. Foreign correspondents, like the Guardian's Shaun Walker were denied entry, allegedly due to lack of space; same with the Hungarian independent media. There were actually plenty of empty seats. An article in the pro-government newspaper Magyar Idők (I won't link it because it's in Hungarian) gave up this explanation, mocked the banned media outlets for "crying" and said that they'll have to get used to it.

Milo Yiannopoulos was also invited to Budapest. I don't think his act will work here; he's a provocateur, who trolls oversensitive leftists, but there are few of those in Hungary. Political correctness in the American sense doesn't exist here. If he talks about how much he loves black dick, he's more likely to offend government supporters than liberals.

Update: Yiannopoulos gave his speech without any protest or disruption. He said that Islam is the greatest threat to civilization - not Islamic terrorism but mainstream Islam - that Germany and Sweden are already occupied, that we must fight against migrants because they attacked Europe, and that "the Devil lives and his name is George Soros".

Such statements are not considered shocking or outrageous in Hungary; Fidesz politicians and pro-government media have been constantly saying things like that for years. Yiannopoulos was not pushing any limits, he did not provoke is audience; he told them what they wanted to hear and indeed have already heard many times. It's such a waste to invite him for this, if you want to hear that stuff, you only need to turn on state TV.

A player on England's national football team got a tattoo of a gun on his calf, and it has become a tabloid fracas. One of Britain's notorious shit newspapers even had it as a headlining story. Essentially, the guy got the tattoo, and a woman associated with an anti-gun organisation (specifically one which tries to disarm street gangs) said that he should be kicked off the national team unless he covers it up or has it removed, resulting in a social media row involving a few famous people. This was apparently worthy of the nation's attention, with proper interviews and controversy punditry and everything.

This local lady arrested on drug charges was literally named Crystal Methvin.

In other news, on Friday when I went to pick up my daughter, I saw like 20 fire trucks parked in a church parking lot. After I picked her up, I swung by this secluded boat ramp that has a Pokémon Gym. The place was swarming with cops, news crews, and forensic units.

It turns out there was a missing 9-year-old in the area. I had feared the worse, but she was found safe.

It turns out she got in trouble at home and ran off. She went to her grandmother's house and crawled in through the doggy-door and hid out there under the bed. The grandmother was out looking for her. I'm so glad they found her.

Performances of the musical Billy Elliot were scrapped in the Hungarian National Opera after an attack by the government's semi-official newspaper, Magyar Idők (Hungarian Times). The circulation of Hungarian Times is probably abysmally low, calculated to be around 8 thousand. But we can't know for sure, because unlike most newspapers, they don't publicly reveal it. It is kept alive by government advertising. (Opposition newspapers aren't actually censored and banned in Hungary. But they don't get government advertising, so if they make a loss, they fold. Pro-government newspapers don't.)

Billy Elliot is based on a 2000 film. It's about an English boy in the 1980s, who wants to be a ballet dancer despite the wishes of his miner father. An article in Hungarian Times claimed that it's going to turn kids gay. Excerpts from the article: (translation from me):

"I think the director and the person who allowed this to be shown could be charged with corruption of minors. [...] When we were there, the theater was full of children, who could see the following: a poor miner's son wants to be a ballet dancer instead of playing football (so typical!) If he dances ballet, he obviously has to be gay. We can also know this because they put in a lot of scenes from Swan Lake, and the more educated members of the audience know that it's about this problem, probably because Tchaikovsky was gay too. [...] The dead mother of the protagonist appears repeatedly, and emphasizes "be yourself", meaning of course, be gay. What else could a mother want? [...] The biggest problem is that this impacts the subconscious in children, just in the age when the orientation can still be influenced."

This may sound like a parody. It's not. It is meant to be taken completely seriously.

(Just a side note: Billy isn't actually gay in the musical and the film).

The Opera director released this explanation: "As you know, the negative campaign in recent weeks against the Billy Elliot production led to a big drop in ticket sales and for this reason, we are cancelling 15 performances in line with the decision of our management." But there's no evidence that ticket sales dropped; it seems more likely that the Opera House is caving to political pressure.

So this didn't happen near me but this couple are regular customers at my store:

Trial set for Hagerstown man who had dog leash on disabled wife’s belt

At the York, Pennsylvania fair a guy was leading his wife around by a dog leash attached to her belt. It was also allegedly around her neck at one pint. She has some form of dementia. I deal with them all the time. They come to the store, he gets in a motorized cart and she wanders. Once he's done shopping he yells "GRANDMA" down every aisle until he finds her. It's so annoying. We've had other customers bring her up to customer service because they're concerned that an elderly woman is shuffling through the store muttering incoherently. Then he comes up and yells at her for "wandering off".

"I did the best I could (at this year's fair). ... I can't let her run away from me," he testified. "You ask anyone in Hagerstown what a devoted husband I am. They all know me."

She moves at a turtle's pace. She does not walk with a normal stride but with tiny shuffling steps. He is not a devoted husband, he is a jackfuckingass who needs to let her be in a home where she can be cared for.

Flooding in Austin has led to the first citywide boil water notice in the city's history.

Fortunately, I just bought a gallon jug of water for my car the other day, but it makes washing food and dishes a pain.
