Your local news

Postby Cobra-D » Tue Jan 24, 2017 6:42 am

In a feeble attempt to get as many people more involved in politics and the world around them I'm creating this thread as way for you to better understand what's going in your state or country not America. So every week I would like it for you to post one article or piece of news of anything going on in your place of living, and to lead by example:

In cali we've added 3,700 new jobs and L.A has to pay 5.2million dollars in wrongful imprisonment suit.

Coming out of the worst drought in many many years, even after good rains here in Durban, we're still facing quite significant water restrictions

Virginia Republicans passed a bill (yet to be signed by the governor) which would allow some school security guards to carry firearms, because there's no way that could ever go wrong.

The British PM, Teresa May, is under pressure because she was informed about a Trident missile test that went wrong and flew towards the USA instead of the assigned target off the coast of Africa. Nobody was told about the failed test, and shortly afterwards parliament voted to renew the Trident system of nuclear weapons. Critics are claiming the vote would have been different if they'd have known about this beforehand. May initially refused to comment (four times in one show) on whether she knew about it, but then it was confirmed by Number 10 that she had been informed and had kept it secret. The government argue that tests are designed to find problems in systems, and that operational information is routinely kept secret for national security reasons.

Even though I don't live there anymore, I try to keep up with news back in Australia. This is where our useless government is at with the whole "Let's stop being arseholes and legalise same sex marriage" thing:

Sydney Morning Herald wrote:Same-sex marriage: Lawyers see red over Turnbull government's vision for equality

The Turnbull government's proposed version of marriage equality would further entrench discrimination by allowing civil celebrants and service providers to refuse to undertake gay weddings, the peak law body says.

The Law Council of Australia will on Monday tell a parliamentary inquiry the proposed laws would allow discrimination against same-sex couples on "no proper basis" and undermine fundamental principles of the law.

Jacksonville finally has a good chance at passing an expanded human rights ordinance that bans discrimination due to a person's sexuality and/or gender identity. This is the third attempt, and Jacksonville is one of the largest cities in America not to have a comprehensive HRO.

German media is flooded with Trump right now and to a smaller degree the rise of our own alt-right party, Alternative für Deutschland (Alternative for Germany) who are big fans of Trump, obviously.
They're polling between 11 and 15 % at the moment, with a rising trend. Our federal election is held this September and unless something major happens, they'll get seats in parliament (parties need to have at least 5 % of votes to get seats). I'm not a big fan of our established parties, but I'm fairly sure they'll balance any influence the AfD will have and I'm grateful for that.

In other news, it was recently ruled by the Federal Constitutional Court that our more obvious Nazi party, Nationaldemokratische Partei Deutschlands (National Democratic Party of Germany), won't be outlawed. The reasoning for this is that while they're unconstitutional, they're too politically insignificant to warrant a ban.
Under normal circumstances I'd consider this an idiotic reasoning, but the tiny percentage they're getting now would practically unanimously go to the AfD, so I'm glad that this isn't happening.

Kamloops is going to became BC’s first Bee City and third in the country. This means that businesses and other groups will do more to create an improved ecosystem for bees.

A Brazilian Supreme Court judge died last Thursday in a plane crash, when he was right about to homologate the testimonies of a bombshell plea bargain involving government ties with construction giant Odebrecht.

Since people from every shade of the political spectrum were under fire, everyone's calling foul play, in particular the recently-ousted Left.

Preliminary investigation results point towards a mix of awful weather (it was raining heavily) and pilot error (he tried to land twice before making an overly steep curve and crashing into the sea).

The path to wisdom does, in fact, begin with a single step.

Where people go wrong is in ignoring all the thousand other steps that come after it. They make the single step of deciding to become one with the universe, and for some reason forget to take the logical next step of living for 70 years on a mountain and a daily bowl of rice and yak-butter tea that'd give it any kind of meaning. While evidence says that the road to hell is paved with good intentions, they’re probably all first steps.

The leader of the Labour party is suffering a new round of Shadow Cabinet resignations over the decision to impose a three-line whip on his MPs to vote in favour of a tiny act of parliament conferring the power on the Prime Minister to invoke article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty. I'm actually baffled by how unable he is to stand up for any sort of principles, and how little his party respects him given he voted against previous leaders several hundred times on various issues.

The Queensland Parliament has introduced a bill that would force companies to remove "offensive" slogans from their vehicles.

Brisbane Times wrote:Offensive advertising bill does not go far enough, groups argue

New laws designed to force companies to remove offensive advertising and slogans from vehicles do not go far enough, advocates have argued.

In November, the Queensland government introduced a bill which would mean advertisers, such as Wicked Campers, would be required to remove offensive slogans and images or risk having their vehicles de-registered.

Depending on your point of view, this is a victory over misogynists and racists, or a concerning imposition on free speech. As a side note, Australians do not have a US-style right to free speech, but it is a general principle that underlies much of our jurisprudence.

Companies like Wicked Campers have long been a thorn in the side of various advocacy groups and the Advertising Standards Bureau, for using slogans and imagery on their campers that are perceived as promoting misogyny, racism and rape culture.

On the other hand, concerned citizens the Australian Christian Lobby have previously tried to have a safe sex ad showing two gay men embracing removed from bus shelters on the grounds of indecency. So it's not like these laws aren't open to abuse.

On a brighter note, researchers at James Cook University may have found a way to alleviate the world's impending chocolate shortage:

James Cook University wrote:Sweet success: chocolate research to boost harvest

James Cook University scientists have discovered how to dramatically improve the cacao bean harvest – and boost chocolate production through species conservation.

JCU graduate student Samantha Forbes and Dr Tobin Northfield from the Centre for Terrestrial Environmental and Sustainability Science, worked with local commercial farmers, the Puglisi family, near Mossman in far north Queensland.

Ms Forbes added rotten cacao fruit husks left over from processing the cacao beans to some plots, and not others.

“I found the addition of cacao husks below trees, which normally would be discarded, dramatically increased pollination rates, and increased the abundance of predators that may help control pests. This simple change tripled the number of fruits, and quadrupled the yield harvested per tree,” she said.

The transformation from cacao flowers to fruit pods containing beans used for chocolate production relies on small midges that develop in decomposing organic matter.
