Other recent news: Trump said he's considering that the US should rejoin the Transpacific Partnership - an agreement he once described a “rape of our country” and pulled out of almost immediately after he became president.

Larry Kudlow, Mr. Trump’s top economic adviser, said in an interview on Thursday with The New York Times that the request to revisit the deal was somewhat spontaneous. “This whole trade thing has exploded,” Mr. Kudlow said.
“There’s no deadline. We’ll pull a team together, but we haven’t even done — I mean, it just happened a couple hours ago.

I liked the TPP in principle, but didn't like the intellectual "property" provisions, provisions which were added at the US request. (This is what happens when you give business interests a seat at the table and not consumer groups.)

I suppose it's too much to hope that the other parties have scrapped those provisions and refuse to add them back if we join, though, but if that did happen I'd say Trump did something right, completely by accident.

Chances are, Trump was just talking out of his ass to soothe GOP members whose constituents are anxious about their goods being impacted by a trade war with China.

I seriously doubt Trump has any real intention of re-joining TPP. He's already come out and said he would only do so if the deal was significantly altered, which the current members have no intention to do.

The storyline on TPP is that he's willing to rejoin if the US can get a "better deal". That's not a deviation, that's Trump's usual pitch on trade: he's not against free trade in principle, he just thinks these deals are written to favor other countries over the US because the globalist establishment deep staters that negotiated them didn't care about defending US interests. It's the same position he's taken on NAFTA, which he's trying to "renegotiate" so we can get a "better deal".

That being said, since he never really specifies what he means by a "better deal", I'm deeply suspicious of these efforts. Since trade policy and its relationship to economic conditions are so complex, this is another area that's ripe for Trump to take credit for the work of others by making largely superficial changes to already-successful systems so he can slap his name on them and claim credit for said success. See also: the Trump Wall, "extreme vetting" of refugees, the economy, the tax cut bill and other GOP legislation, the war on ISIS, etc.

So Trump just pardoned Scooter Libby of Dick Cheney fame, which is... random. Not sure how to specifically feel about it other than just vaguely negative.

I would suggest feeling specifically negative about it.

In a statement, Trump conceded he has no personal relationship with Libby, whose case has been held up by conservatives as an example of a special counsel overstepping his bounds.

"I don't know Mr. Libby," Trump said in a statement released by the White House. "But for years I have heard that he has been treated unfairly. Hopefully, this full pardon will help rectify a very sad portion of his life."

Since don t just believes whatever the last thing someone told him, or to be more precise, muffled around his balls, we seriously need more people telling him the truth or to just stop doing literally anything.

I suspect this is foretelling in that, like libby, perjury might come up again. Didn't don t say he would pardon himself at some point? I can't remember all the shit he's said. Sigh, back to the rum.

I think he's trying to send the message that if you stay loyal to him and don't snitch he will pardon you, same as with Arpaio.

Maybe not so random.

https://globalnews.ca/news/4143002/trum ... ter-libby/

“I don’t know Mr. Libby,” Trump said in a White House statement, “but for years I have heard that he has been treated unfairly. Hopefully, this full pardon will help rectify a very sad portion of his life.”

[...]

The Libby pardon coincided with the arrival in the White House of John Bolton as Trump’s new national security adviser. Bolton was a key Bush administration advocate, along with Cheney and Libby, of the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq.

Bush spokesman Freddy Ford said, “President Bush is pleased for Scooter and his family.”

Cheney’s daughter Liz Cheney tweeted: “Scooter Libby is a good, honorable and innocent man who was the victim of prosecutorial misconduct and a miscarriage of justice. Thank you @realDonaldTrump for righting a terrible wrong.”

The entire headline is, "Trump pardons Scooter Libby, ex-Cheney aide convicted of obstruction of justice".

Hmmm... obstruction of justice, lying to the FBI... all that's missing is...

https://www.cnn.com/2018/04/13/politics ... index.html

The surprise news that President Donald Trump is expected to pardon Scooter Libby includes a lesser-known, eyebrow-raising detail: the man who authorized the special counsel in that case was none other than James Comey.

Points for subtlety?

So, Trump's official justification is that he heard that Libby has been treated unfairly. Oh, okay then. He probably consulted other authoritative legal sources, like People Are Saying and You Know It I Know It Everybody Knows It.

Trump after the missile strikes in Syria: "Could not have had a better result. Mission Accomplished!"

I would avoid that particular phrase if I was in his place...

Alonzo!

Anyways, I don't care who but someone needs to stop trump from tweeting. It might just let me ignore the years and just assume stagnation until we can get someone not senile, dumb and just every "ist" in office. Shit, I forgot. In congress as well. And... fuck we're screwed, aren't we? sigh. back to the rum again

The whole Michael Cohen thing sounds like it could be very bad for Trump Inc.

I didn't appreciate how up to his eyeballs Cohen is in Trumps bidnez.

Where to start?

https://www.wsj.com/articles/trump-lawy ... 1523638726

President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer negotiated a deal in late 2017 to pay $1.6 million to a former Playboy model who said she was impregnated by a top Republican fundraiser, according to people familiar with the matter.

Fixer-supreme. No big; we already know he's 'fixed' a few things via the application of money.

The Broidy agreement uses the same pseudonyms for Mr. Broidy and Ms. Bechard—David Dennison and Peggy Peterson—as the earlier agreement used for Mr. Trump and Ms. Clifford, respectively, the person familiar with the matter said. Both agreements had separate side letters that listed the real names of the parties, this person said.

Okay, a fixer, minus the 'supreme' bit. But, that's just paying-off women with whom Trump did some in-depth consulting (I thought he was a germaphobe?), right?

http://www.businessinsider.com/mueller- ... nce-2018-4

The special counsel Robert Mueller has evidence linking Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump's longtime lawyer, to a secret trip to Prague in the summer of 2016, McClatchy reported Friday.

Ohhh, so there's the Mueller tie-in. That has something to do with a famous dossier.

At this point, it's important to highlight that the investigation into Cohen's activity which resulted in the raid on his office, home, and hotel room, was part of a New York Southern District investigation - not the one led by Mueller, though the raid was a result of Mueller tipping-off the NYSD folks.

In other words, Trump can stomp on Mueller, but he can't stop the NYSD investigation.

But, surely Michael Cohen is an upstanding lawyer.

https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/n ... mp-w518941

Cohen joined the Trump Organization in 2006, and eventually became Trump's personal lawyer, a role once occupied by Roy Cohn, Senator Joseph McCarthy's heavy-lidded hatchet man during the Red Scare who advised Trump in the 1980s. Michael Cohen's bare-knuckled tactics earned him the nickname of "Tom," a reference to Tom Hagen, the consigliore to Mafia Don Vito Corleone in The Godfather.

Hyperbolic, surely! He can't have...

https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-des ... presidency

However, I am unaware of anybody who has taken a serious look at Trump’s business who doesn’t believe that there is a high likelihood of rampant criminality. In Azerbaijan, he did business with a likely money launderer for Iran’s Revolutionary Guard. In the Republic of Georgia, he partnered with a group that was being investigated for a possible role in the largest known bank-fraud and money-laundering case in history. In Indonesia, his development partner is “knee-deep in dirty politics”; there are [ur=https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2017-02-15/why-the-trump-organization-was-cited-in-a-brazil-corruption-probel]criminal investigations[/url] of his deals in Brazil; the F.B.I. is reportedly looking into his daughter Ivanka’s role in the Trump hotel in Vancouver, for which she worked with a Malaysian family that has admitted to financial fraud. Back home, Donald, Jr., and Ivanka were investigated for financial crimes associated with the Trump hotel in SoHo—an investigation that was halted suspiciously. His Taj Mahal casino received what was then the largest fine in history for money-laundering violations.

NB: Added links in the quote; errors may have happened, so best go to the source

It will take months, and a few more months, but this will play-out, and it will get ugly.

So, Person I Would've Voted for in 2016 Over Hillary Clinton, Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley announced sanctions on Russia on Monday for standing by Syria after this chemical attack. The administration walked that back, with Larry Kudlow saying "I think she was confused."

To which she, a day later, said "With all due respect, I don't get confused," and forced an apology out of him. Now the story is that she got ahead of a memo that was released before she could see it, and that Trump is just considering sanctions, not sold on them.

Giving everyone an out was smart. There are two people in Trump's administration (and this happens in every administration) that it is not smart for him to throw under the bus or try to subject to Sessions-style humiliation: DefSec Mattis and Haley. Mattis, because even Republican voters would likely turn on him for trying to humiliate one of the best commanders in a generation, and Haley because she's widely respected and is one of the few people that could possibly beat him in a primary challenge if she felt like it.

The country isn't being raped if it says yes after a long string of "no" responses. Its just that the trade program was being persistent. Wearing someone down is a totally valid strategy.
