Are you an organ donor?

Postby Tesseracts » Fri Dec 04, 2015 2:01 am

Why or why not? I'm an organ donor.

22 people die every day because not enough people are donating organs.

I am an organ donor as well; I can't conceive of a reasonable moral system that would do anything other than mandate that I become an organ donor. There is no harm done whatsoever, it requires no action on my part, and it could potentially save several lives. Pardon the pun (very much intended), but this is a no-brainer.

I only became one after my son was born. I didn't care one bit before that.

Not yet, because I'm not dead. Once I've stopped using my organs, whoever wants them can use them, though. I doubt they'll be worth much, but hey, maybe scientists can dissect my parts to learn things.

(Yes, the "donor" endorsement is signed on my driver's license)

I have my card in my wallet at all times. I do have some exclusions. Not for me (I don't believe in any life after death so my body after my death means nothing to me), but in the event that I leave people behind, I do want to give them something to bury/burn. So my skin and bones are excluded, just about everything else is fair game.

Why is it more important that your family have something to bury then that people in need of those organs live? You're not just ensuring your own loved ones have something to bury.

I'm not going to be using my body after I die, so I do not care at all what is done with it. I'd like to donate my body to science, but I'm not sure how to make that official. Maybe they'll read this post after I die, and that will be enough!

I'm on the organ donor registry and also the bone marrow registry. I really encourage anyone to sign up to that, because the chances of being a match for someone are so slim that a) you'll almost certainly never have to do anything and b) if you are a match for someone who needs a bone marrow transplant it's entirely possible that you're the only person in the world who can save their life.

...I'm not sure what to put. I'm not an organ donor, but I will be some day, eh.

Please, hands off my kidneys.

I am, because there's literally no downside that I can see and we don't have enough organ donors. Plus I haven't accomplished anything worth mentioning in life, so if I die prematurely my life won't be a complete waste. Or at least I think I am. I have the little heart on my driver's license but don't have a separate card. But maybe separate cards are just a Dutch thing.

AFAIK, becoming an organ donor in the US merely means checking a little box when you apply for your driver's license. If I were required to carry a special card everywhere to be an organ donor, I likely wouldn't be, because I'm terribly disorganized and that would be one more card which is always falling out of my wallet, and one more card to replace if I ever lose my wallet for good (which I haven't done yet, but I'm convinced is only a matter of time. given how prone I am to losing it for short periods).

Paradoxically, if the US had an opt-out system, as Scandinavia did, I'd probably opt-out, even if it did require extra hoops to jump through. I feel like in that case there would be no harm in doing so, since I believe that even at the highest opt-out rates something like only 3% of people bother. I think that might have to do with the fact that I'm a bit of a contrarian, and it would allow me to tell people what a horrible person I am ("See: I even opted out of the organ-donor system") without actually doing any harm.

Uh, who ever said anything about poking? There's no poking. They're going to cut you open with extremely sharp knives and remove your body parts.

I don't think organ donation should be mandatory because I think everyone has the right to decide what happens with their body, but I think a lot more people need to be convinced to donate.

In the US you're not allowed to give people financial incentive to donate. I'm not sure if that's good.

It's worth noting that there currently is no right, under US law, to decide what happens with any body (your own included) when you die. You have only four options: you can bury a corpse, cremate it, donate its organs, or donate it to science.

I think organ donation should be opt-out instead of opt-in.

It's been shown to significantly alter one's perception. Opting in means one's going out of their way to donate organs. Opting out means one's going out of their way to not donate. People don't want to make decisions on things they don't have an opinion on.

And it doesn't take away your freedom to not donate, in case you prefer it that way.
