Good News, Everyone!

Postby Learned Nand » Fri Dec 06, 2013 7:25 pm

I thought we should create a thread for news that is pretty much unambiguously good. When you create a separate thread for it, there's not much discussion beyond "yes, that is a good thing", but presumably we still want to hear good news. So here's a thread for it. I was inspired by some of the good news I found today:

U3 unemployment drops to 7%, lowest in 5 years

All Syrian Chemical Weapons Munitions Destroyed

Measles eliminated in the United States

Does anyone not read the title of this thread in Professor Farnsworth's voice?

I wondered. In that case I can report a complete success.

Judge strikes down Utah's same-sex marriage ban.

The judge ruled the same way anybody who has skimmed the constitution would rule: that a ban on same sex marriage violates the 14th amendment's guarantee of equal protection under the law.

I have a feel this thread is going to be sustained a while by court decisions ruling that same-sex marriage is protected by the 14th amendment.

What do you know, I was right. Now a judge has ruled that Oklahoma's ban on same sex marriage is unconstitutional.

Positive News Thread

Once and a while something good appears in the news. If you find any such stories, post them here.

I just read a great article about an ordinary criminal who saved as many people as he could from hurricane Katrina.

Reports of Jericho the lion's death have been exaggerated. So that made me happy (that he wasn't dead).

I prefer the Gawker version of this story.

CNN reports that, according to a senior park official, Cecil the lion’s brother Jericho, who is also a lion, was killed on Saturday in Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park.

Thank you, Gawker.

That vaccine is a godsend.

Also Single Pill therapy for HIV and AIDS patients are getting wider available by the day.

Not too bad.

The AP reports that a year after the Ferguson violence 24 states have passed a total of 40 police reform measures, including the adoption of body cameras and limits on military-style hardware.
