Basically, forty five years ago a Japanese boxer named Hakamada Iwao was found guilty for murder on no evidence except a confession that was obtained unethically--without the offer of a lawyer and also under torture--leading one of the original judges to resign, "unable to bear the burden of conscience" of having given the sentence. Under Japanese law--which you might be surprised still has a death sentence (I certainly was)--he can be executed at the court's whim. Until then, he waits in death row, this article marking his 45th anniversary imprisoned.
