Trump Ends Shutdown with Three Week Stay and No Wall

Postby Deathclaw_Puncher » Fri Jan 25, 2019 9:33 pm

In a victory for Speaker and Pelosi and the Democrats, Trump agreed to open the Government until February 15th, without any border wall funding, opting instead for the Democrat backed border security measures.

So the democrats have won until February 15th. At which point we'll have to go around this merry-go-round again.

The senate has made the reopening official, voting unanimously for the Schumer cloture amendment that failed yesterday.

If the shutdown has stopped, I assume they can all go out and play again now.

The story I heard floating around the political media:

  • There were a *lot* of Republicans who would have been happy to vote for the Schumer bill on Thursday, but...
  • McConnell's plan was to hold the line for one public vote where most of the GOP caucus could be seen supporting Trump, but it would be clear that there weren't enough votes to pass wall funding.
  • Senior GOP senators had a meeting with Pence on Thursday night after the vote and gave him an ultimatum that the posturing was over and the next vote would be to pass the Schumer bill with or without Trump's support.
  • After the Friday morning fiasco at LaGuardia Airport, McConnell and friends had another meeting with the White House and essentially told them "Time's up."

All of which proves (again) that Mitch McConnell may have a black heart of pure congealed evil, but he's nobody's fool.

Well, until I take over the world. I'm definitely making him my court jester.

In another edition of "Sometimes the System Works":

https://abcnews.go.com/beta-story-container/Politics/ban-government-shutdowns-republicans-democrats-make-law/story?id=60724848

At least three different bipartisan proposals are being floated in Congress that would eliminate future government shutdowns by creating automatic stopgap funding at preexisting levels if a budget deal is not reached. All four of the caucus leaders (McConnell, McCarthy, Schumer, and Pelosi) have expressed support for the idea. Senate Democrats are reportedly "clamoring" to sign onto a proposal that already has 19(!) Republican sponsors.

If you believe in political subtext, it seems like a pretty big (and richly deserved) middle finger to the White House from McConnell for this to be moving so quickly while budget negotiations over the wall are still ongoing.
