Well, this feels straight out of Kill Bill but it's real life.
A woman who is in a persistent vegetative state in an Arizona care facility gave birth. She's not just recently been in a PVS, no, she has been for years. Which means a male caregiver is responsible for this act. Or a male visitor. Or a female staff member/visitor with a turkey baster.
Staff there didn't even realize she was pregnant until she went into labor. At her age, 29, a sudden lapse in menses should have been investigated. The fact that it apparently wasn't and no one realized that her periods had stopped and she was pregnant frustrates me. The only way I can find some solace in this is if she had a history of irregular periods. Even still, it frustrates me.
The police have gotten bucal swabs of male employees and those who've refused the DNA tests they have gotten court orders to obtain them. For obvious reasons. Because she is a sexual assault victim.
Oh, and she's a member of the San Carlos Apache Tribe.
From what I can gather, the baby is still in the hospital as it was in medical distress upon birth which isn't surprising since she had no prenatal care. However, the family said it is a baby boy and that he's been born into a loving family and being well cared for.
So, how this did happen? Well, a person in PVS still has a functional body. Sadly, this isn't the first time something like this has happened in a care facility. It's why I'm cautious to even hug residents for fear of it being misconstrued.
I cannot stress enough how frustrated I am that no one appeared to notice that she was pregnant on top of the rape that occurred.
