SCOTUS Denies Stay, New Disclosure Ruling Goes Into Effect

Postby Deathclaw_Puncher » Wed Sep 19, 2018 12:33 am

The Supreme Court has denied and lifted two separate stays respectively, pertaining to a case against Crossroad GPS and the FEC; meaning that effective immediately, anyone making more than $250 in express advocacy ads — ads that tell viewers who to vote for or against — must now disclose the identities of all contributors who gave more than $200 in a year. They must also identify who among those contributors earmarked their contributions for express ads. Because of this decision, the contributors for a major category of dark money spending this fall will have to be disclosed to the public.

Clear this up for me, because I dun think so gud:

Is this one of those cases that leads one to the conclusion that, If the Supreme Court were as conservative as they say it is, you'd see a totally different ruling?

Turns out the stay is only for 45 days, but that's right up until the Thursday before the election, which might just be enough.

We're not familiar with Russian or Chinese names so they'll go over our head and it'll just be business as usual.

That or the ads produced will be considered something other than an explicit advocacy for or against a candidate even though they are just for the purpose of getting over this minor bump. Instead of "Don't Vote for Specific Person who is running for Governor" it'll be "Don't Vote for The Other Party's Nominee for Governor", or something like that.

“This is going to become a bad meme,” Todd observed.
