It's much, much worse than just Ted McCarrick.
The Pennsylvania Supreme Court just released a 1400-page report on a recent grand jury investigation of the state's Catholic churches. They found over 1,000 cases of sexual abuse of children, at the hands of over 300 different priests. Naturally, they also found senior officials had known what was happening and covered it up.

As for the reaction, Michael Brendan Dougherty (a conservative Catholic at National Review) has described this as "the Catholic Church's Rotherham". He rejects Catholic leadership's professions of "sadness" at such events and promises to change, declaring "we don't need better policies. We need better men".
