Weird news

Postby cmsellers » Mon Jul 16, 2018 3:26 am

So, I saw a news story which is so weird that I realized we need a weird news thread.

The story is this: "Iran accuses Israel of stealing its snow."

The Israeli Defense Forces responded as follows:

the son of the Joplin woman has already sent in something for me to get on this.
fingers crossed I don't because the fashion show we did at the target on friday did not go well.
I'm old and stuck in my ways.
I'll keep everyone posted if I get an episode

You might as well retitle this the "Ashley shares stories from RDA's What The Fuck Is Wrong With You? Thread".

I'd love to get the Fab 5 treatment, but I don't think I have any friends close enough to think of nominating me. Also, there's been multiple sightings of various members of the Fab 5 in my Target, but I'm rarely on the sales floor so I haven't seen them.

And his feel-good powers,
He made all the girls blush and sigh.

My first thought when reading this: "Wow, Rafael Dos Anjos has got his social media game down way better than all the other fighters"

I’m not sure if this is weird enough for here, but I don’t think it’s worth giving it its own thread.

A study published at the end of July showed that it’s generally harder, on average, for people to turn a robot off if it begs for its life. According to the article, it wasn’t the first study done to test this.

(Presumably, the only way to stop a bad guy with a transgender-friendly privacy law is a good guy with a transgender-friendly privacy law, and thus transgender-friendly privacy law rights need to be enshrined in the Constitution as well)

Of course anyone who watched The Good Place already knows this.

Some computer games even exploit that impulse: if you alt-F4 out of one of the Baldur's Gate games (as opposed to quitting via the menu), a confirmation window will pop up reading "Are you sure you want to quit? Boo will miss you...", trying to tug at your heartstrings with a cute hamster that is in fact just a few lines of code on your computer. Alpha Centauri does the same thing if you quit through the game menu, sometimes playing a voice clip at the "are you sure you want to quit?" confirmation screen that says in a pitiful tone "please don't go, the drones need you; they look up to you".

"If it were all so simple! If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them; but the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?"

I have been debating posting this because it involves US politics, but ultimately it struck me as so weird I felt that I had to.

A Florida state house candidate was caught lying about both graduating college and what she majored it. Because having a degree in marketing makes you more qualified to write laws than having dropped out of a degree in retailing does, I guess?

So Max shared this on Discord. A Slovenian comedian who used to do impersonations of the old prime minister was just appointed prime minister for real.
