I had seen this story posted on Facebook, in one of those videos that are silent and filled with some text commentary. I wanted to look further into it. The video on the link shows more, and has audio of the discussion between the kids and the cops.
They were late to the tour, so it may have looked like they just showed up, and maybe were just tagging along and hadn't been invited. I can get that.
After just watching the video, a thought occurred to me: "I bet this had more to do with some square lady seeing quiet metal heads and getting spooked at their long hair and shirts she can't read, than it did race."
I read through the article, and felt like this had pretty much been confirmed: "She says their behavior is odd and that they're wearing 'black clothing.'" with "'weird symbolism or wording on it.'"
"I think they're Hispanic, I believe," the mother says, when asked about whether they were white males. "One of them for sure. He said he's from Mexico." - maybe a little odd, but she was asked if they were white.
Then the mom of the kids goes on to say ""It breaks my heart, because they didn't do anything to warrant that," Gray told the affiliate. "They're walking on their own ancestors' land, so it breaks my heart.""
They both look to get a free VIP tour of the school later, which is cool. But, the president of the school is saying he is all like "a white man in a position of authority," and that his status gave him privilege."
This still sounds to me like metal-enthusiast discrimination (which sucks), and it is being made about race.
The real lesson here? If you want to go to college, listen to Yanni or some shit in public, and Bloodbath in private.
