i am doubtfull about 'different diseases with different symptons'. i fully believe in the accusations that diagnoses are a mess, with the same set of symptons reaching a wildly different diagnosis depending on what is fashionable at the time and who is doing the diagnosing. a problem that gets obscured because the examples that psychiatrists study with tend to fall nicely into categories, way nicer then actual people who rarely fit into nice categories and are very sensitive to pressure from their therapist to focus on certain symptons while downplaying others (which is not even taking into account outright fraud: therapists are known to fudge the numbers if they need guinee pigs for experiments or because some treatments are way more profitable then others)
