Cranberries leader Dolores O'Riordan dead, 46

I just heard about this a couple minutes ago, so I'm still in shock about this. The Cranberries were one of those bands that are part of the soundtrack of my life in very significant ways.

The cause, or any other details about her passing have not been disclosed, as the family requested privacy. So far all that's been revealed is that she was in London doing some recordings with the band, and that this was unexpected. I'll try to update when more information becomes available.

Wow! This actually throws me for a bit of a loop. I'm actually a bit verklempt over here! I loved her music just so fucking much. Her accent was a charming delight - don't hear many foreign artists who can sing with one the way that she did. Rest in peace, Ms. O'Riordan - in our heads, in our heads, you'll be singing!

We should all post our favorite Cranberries songs. Here's one of mine.

Damnit, you.

An easily recognizable voice - that vibrato.

The band grew on me over the years. My daughter sings along-with, which - in my books - is a vote for naturally great music.

I like this one:

It’s on the same album as “Dreams.”

(Presumably, the only way to stop a bad guy with a transgender-friendly privacy law is a good guy with a transgender-friendly privacy law, and thus transgender-friendly privacy law rights need to be enshrined in the Constitution as well)

This will sound strange, but there is a part of me that always wanted to hear O'Riordan, Allannis Morrisette, and James Hetfield have a trailing 'a-YAH' competition. I somehow pictured O'Riordan looking at Hetfield and asking, in her lilting sing-song way, "Do you even lift, brah-YAH?" and Allanis going all, "Oh, snap, that was so uninvited-AH!". Then all three break into an a-YAH'ed version of Enter Sandman which breaks everything.

O'Riordan's funeral took place on Tuesday, but still no word on the cause of death. According to the Rolling Stone piece linked below, the autopsy and toxicity reports haven't been revealed, but the police is treating the death as "unexplained but not suspicious".

I recommend you give it a read anyway. It's a good account of Dolores' last few days. Some of her friends and collaborators say she was in a good place, though I am still more concerned about what I'm not hearing, given the singer's history with back problems, bipolar disorder and a previous attempt on her life a few years back. At the end of the day the result is the same: music has lost one of its most powerful voices.
