Re: There is no coup in Zimbabwe

Update:

Robert Mugabe has been removed as President of Zanu-PF (not Zimbabwe, of which he currently remains President). Grace Mugabe has been removed from the party entirely, and Emmerson Mnangagwa has been named as Mugabe's successor as President of Zanu-PF. The official statement was "he can go farming". Talks are being held today regarding Mugabe's removal from the Presidency, but he is expected to refuse to go. However, there are noises they may choose to impeach him if forced to.

So far I've only eyed this thread without commenting, but I guess better late than never.
Haven't been to Zim since a holiday in 92, but I know loads of people from there so let's give it a spin.

The military taking over Zim is not really a good thing. Except for forcing Bob to leave. Seriously, it's been 20 years too long. Hey, I was overjoyed like many at first, but it soon became clear that they're not exactly the good guys. As in they're not there for the people, as so many ordinary Zimbabweans seem to believe, but they did it for a faction in the governing Zanu PF party.
Remember that they are all members of that party (army chiefs). The army's generals were in the war of independence with Mugabe. And with Mnangagwa. They're peas in a pod.

Mnangagwa has as much blood on his hands as Mugabe does. The tens of thousands of Ndebele killed during the 80's because of dissent when he was chief of intelligence scream for his head. He's not a democrat by any means. Never has been.
Buuuuuuut, the army generals, his old friends, likes him better than they like Grace Mugabe.
So bye bye, Gucci Grace!
And good riddance.

Yet he's been given a second chance. We'll have to see if Emmerson makes something of this, or if he manages to fuck up his legacy even more.
The next few weeks should tell the story.

Mugabe is still President, for now. In a rambling, confused speech he declined to resign his position and declared his intention to preside over the conference of Zanu-PF in December. The military dudes sat around him looked awkward as fuck while he stumbled over his lines, got things wrong and generally seemed like a cantankerous old dude who's refusing to accept that his fight is over.

One thing I noted from the live broadcast that the media will never ever mention again was the first unscripted words out of his mouth: "That was the wrong speech". Does that mean he penned a more combative one which was ditched for the military script? Maybe it's just he's as confused as his speech delivery. Either way, that one comment is more interesting than anything he actually said.

Robert Mugabe has resigned as president of Zimbabwe after 37 years in power.

This is a good day. The people of Zim are celebrating in the streets, and no security police are detaining them.
For years even insulting Mugabe on social media, or even in private, was enough to get you arrested, much less an actual protest.
Things seem to have changed since the not-coup (also known as a "military intervention") and the security police are nowhere to be seen.

This is an enormously significant day for Zim, and they have every right to celebrate.
Tomorrow might bring something different which they may or may not like, but like a Zimbabwean friend said earlier: just let us enjoy today.

Great news for the Zimbabwe National Goat Party. They finally have a change to elect their dream ungulate candidate.
