What do the forum icons mean?

Postby w00 » Sat Apr 27, 2013 10:43 am

If you're using the "prosilver" theme that is the officially supported theme with phpBB software, you'll have seen the forum icons are trying to imply a lot of information but they miss an image title that pops up on mouse-over to explain them.

So here's my attempt to explain some of them.

The Alpha theme has little square boxes whose meaning is as evasive as the meaning of life itself. Themes can be changed in Profile / User Control Panel (UCP), under board preferences.

Reason: Added 2 more icons, for navigating to newest-unread and latest comments

This is a neat trick. I didn't know you could add announcements the user control panel.

Good information too.

Hey folks, there are some really nice themes to choose from now.

I highly recommend trying out a version of prosilver and also subsilver.

Give each of them an hour's test run and see what you prefer.

I'm not using any theme, just the default setting. I can figure out orange for unread posts and black for no unread posts, and the 'closed' symbol for locked thread. But some of them have little letters or arrows and some of them have a dot in the corner. Anyone know what those mean?

The dot means it's a thread you've posted in. The arrow means the thread has been moved to a different forum, clicking it will take you there. Hope that helped.

The default theme is called Alpha.

I think the dot indicates a forum or topic that you've posted in.

The arrows likely mean "go to first unread post".

*punches w00 while he's sulking (because I add injury to insult)*

And THAT is for mocking the "n". My work here is done.

Thanks. Now you say it, it's obvious.

And as for the arrows, a message to that effect comes up when you hover. But not with the other symbols. Some have a little R in the square, and some have a little S.

Yeah, arrow in the colored box is a moved thread. "S" indicates a stickied thread--they'll always show up at the top of a forum. I haven't seen an "R" yet, but I'm it means adults-only.

It's always in the last place you look for it, unless you're the kind of person who keeps looking for it after you've found it.

Actually there aren't any R's. It's one of those funny square fonts where and R and an A are almost identical, and I've just realised that they're actually A's. Which makes it a lot easier to make the connection that the topics that have one are precisely the ones in the 'announcements' sections.
