The Welcome Mat

Postby TCS Staff » Sun Apr 14, 2013 6:44 pm

Welcome to our little corner of the Internet. We're a weird little bunch of rascals, and it's only fair we explain how we got here.

Back in 2013, a group of like-minded individuals gathered together in the comment section of a popular comedy website to read some articles, make a few jokes, roast a few trolls, and generally have a good time with each other as they'd done many times before. Instead, they were greeted with the threat of those comments being removed. Now any other website, that wouldn't matter probably. Communities just don't crop up in comment sections, do they? Those are the cesspools of human misery at the bottoms of articles. And yet, like a flower in a crack in the sidewalk, here were all these friends gathered together in a hard place to sprout.

We had to act quickly. Many of us had found each other in real life, most of us kept in close contact with each other already. We organized a movement and, spearheaded by Tesseracts, started life out in the vasty nothingness on our own for the first time. And somehow, through nothing more than sheer love for each other and our stupid puns and our awful serial-murder jokes, we found the money and time and determination to make the move into our own domain name, the site you're currently visiting, and grow by leaps and bounds in just days. We never forget where we came from, but now our eyes are firmly set on the future.

Back on Cracked we'd shared laughs and tears, triumphs and heartbreaks. Even our invented characters were brazenly honest folks, but here, in our new home, we are finally free to spout our outlandish plastic cup politics at the world no, please don't actually do that, please!. We at TCS warmly invite you to start that post you're afraid to start, to enter that chat full of people you only know marginally, submit that article you wrote, and to never be afraid to ask a moderator or admin for help if you ever feel anything but safe and welcome. You'll know us by our red and green blue names, and by the fact that we've been building threads, writing articles, and hosting chatrooms nonstop, just like our friends. This is entirely because, for us, this is as much our playground as it is our responsibility to keep it tidy. We're playing here just like you.

If you have questions, all of the staff have little PM buttons by their names--click those and you'll feel taken care of in short order. You can also reach us by posting on the Ask a Mod board. Or post your questions or comments on the Site Suggestions board. Don't be afraid that it might be a bad time--there's one or more of us at all hours of the day and night.

And don't be shy with those green thumbs we love so much! You can even jump in a person's profile and click "Rate User" to give them a little extra rep, just to brighten their day. Above all things, don't be shy about talking. Lurk as you like, but we'd love to hear from you. We'd love to hear your comments, because if the world had a comment section... this would be it.

I mean, what else were you gonna do? Be productive?

You know, jay, that is really reassuring! I rarely comment on Cracked, and took a look around the forums but it seems super strict and unwelcoming, its much nicer here, and I'm not as worried about making myself look like an eejit as it were! So thanks!!

"The Cosmos is all that is or was or ever will be. Our feeblest contemplations of the Cosmos stir us -- there is a tingling in the spine, a catch in the voice, a faint sensation, as if a distant memory, of falling from a height. We know we are approaching the greatest of mysteries."

I almost always feel terrified to comment on articles for fear of saying something stupid and being the idiot of the thread, but maybe I'll be able to give it a try here, I've always thought forums looked fun

I say stupid things in the article comments all the time, and so far no one has laughed at me about it. To my e-face anyway. So you're probably fine!

But you should definitely stick around here too. It is fun :)

I have no authority here, but I will gently tip over trash cans and refuse to return my tray to the upright position if the people in charge ever decide to do a Wall of Shame type thread highlighting "stupid" comments.

It hasn't even been mentioned. I doubt it would ever be considered.

I only bring that up to reiterate this point:
Here... in this place... you are welcome.

That's everything... that's the only thing... that Tess and Gash are trying to build.

I've been lurking for about 2 hours now. This is exactly the type of stuff I am proud of coming from the Cracked community! I rarely make comments, and when I do they arent exactly witty or relevant or whatever, but I LOVE the community and you guys inspire the shit out of me. Keep on keepin on.

Oh no, we're not doing that here. No need to worry about that.

Whew, that's a relief. 3/4 of everything I say tends to be pretty stupid.

Technically "pretty stupid" was only 1/7 of what you said there.

Thank you jayman419. This is the first forum I've joined. Well the second one really. The first one is the forum at Cracked and I've only had two or three posts there.

Glad to see I'm not the only one scared of looking like an eejit in the comments section. Once I had the nerve to ask what this pun was about, and although Thunderous was kind enough to reply, the barrage of thumbs down my question got freaked me out.

I think one thing that people tend to forget on Cracked is that tons, and I mean tons, of the members aren't native speakers, and may miss something. We'll be nice. Puns aren't as easy as people think...just almost.

Well, I can say I messed up a few quotes within my first few posts and started off a topic that got moved. (Maybe it got moved because of my own idiocy, and maybe it moved because the place is getting organized; who knows? Not me, certainly.)

To any lurkers out there who are feeling shy, learn from my example: No one called me names or booted me; everyone just worked around me, and some have even replied to my posts with positive responses. Back at Cracked I never had a particularly bad run-in in the comments (minus some downvotes), and so far folks here have been pretty relaxed about the jump from commenting to foruming.

You'll probably see some people getting ribbed, but I'm guessing most of them will be somewhat "famous" commenters from Cracked who have good senses or humor about themselves.

It's always in the last place you look for it, unless you're the kind of person who keeps looking for it after you've found it.

If you're scared to show your face around here because you don't want to break any social mores or anything, now's probably the best time to come say hi. First of all, we love you because you're talking to us, and we're all sad, lonely people.

Second, this forum is only a few days old. We have very few mores, no traditions, and only a handful or rules. Unless you're an asshole, there's nothing you could possibly do that will make people laugh at your or hate you or anything. Unless you list "Looking at kiddie porn" in the Hobbies and Talents thread. So, you know, don't tell us you look at kiddie porn.

EDIT: Actually, don't look at kiddie porn at all. That's the best advice I can give you. You're 100% welcome here as long as you don't look at kiddie porn.
