Hes, Shes, Hims, and Hers

Got a suggestion how we can improve? Post it here.

Hes, Shes, Hims, and Hers

Postby DamianaRaven » Sun Jun 28, 2015 9:47 pm

I'm tired of getting flustered about pronoun usage. Can we have a gender option on our profiles? At the very least, may I open a gender declaration thread?

What's wrong with the good old singular "they"?
It was good enough for Shakespeare. Do you think you're better than the Bard, Ms. Raven?

Hey! My gender is totally "woodpecker!" (Well, except on Friday, when it's "fish.")

I don't feel any confusion about pronouns, but I don't see why there can't be a thread for that purpose.

Speaking as an individual, I really don't see a point in this. Gender isn't really relevant to creating a user profile on TCS, or a lot of what we do. I think the information on the user profiles page is all preset, except title, which we custom added. I'd rather not have a field that's asking someone to define their gender, which they may consider personal. (For the same reason, I don't really care for the Location field either, I prefer my anonymity). If someone wanted to use it, that's fine, I just see it as rather pointless.

As for the thread, I don't really care for it, though I don't really see an issue with it. I won't be posting in it, because I don't want a thread dedicated to recording mine and others genders. And also that I don't care if people use the wrong pronoun for me, cause no big deal, who cares?

And yet I thought we all already knew that Ambi lives in Helsinki. Or at least her love of metal music heavily suggests that she does.

I think you're joking but I honestly thought Ambi was female for ages. In my defense, it can be hard to tell with a lot of lizard species.

What who? Do you mean CMS? Because I probably have the worst eyesight on the forum. At least I don't know of anyone with stronger glasses than mine.

Here's the thing about gender on TCS, in my personal opinion it's a meaningless label. Given the sum total of most of our interaction here is written communication which is either casual (TV, books etc) or generally formal argumentation (Loud noises/CAASS), there's no need to know people's gender to interact in either of those ways.

In casual threads you can experience someone's subjective opinion about media or entertainment without needing their gender for context. In serious threads someone's argument isn't supported by identity unless that identity provides expertise someone else doesn't or can't have, and it should be incumbent on the person claiming that expertise to demonstrate they possess it. Arguments should stand apart from identity, a good argument shouldn't be shunned because a person is part of the wrong group, nor should bad arguments be supported for the identity of the person making it.

So I don't see any reason why we'd need gender notes on accounts.

Don't listen to Marcuse! Gender is very important. How else am I supposed to give it to Bert's mom every night?
