Here are a few steps of the self portrait I just uploaded. I traced some of the outline from the photo, but most of it is painted by hand without tracing. I used the eyedropper tool to pick the colors, which I don't feel insecure about because I know from experience I'm capable of picking the right color without help from a computer. It took about 3 and a half hours.

Also, I think it looks better flipped this way than it does the way I uploaded it, which is the opposite.

I joined a Facebook group called Daily Spitpaint. The point is to do a picture in a half hour. One of today's themes was wild dragon's nest, so I did that.

I have been working on this drawing for the past 3 days. I took a workshop taught by an instructor who was trained in Russia, which is important because I've wanted to learn Russian style realism for years. It was great to finally get a chance to do this and I think it will change the way I draw. Russian art looks more three dimensional, and has a better understanding of form and anatomy than the stuff we get here in the West.

Interestingly, I showed the instructor some of my paintings, and he seemed more impressed with my landscapes than with my portraits. Others have told me my portraits are better than my landscapes. I told him that, and he said it's because in the West people don't like landscapes. That's true. Maybe I would move to Russia if it wasn't so dystopian.

Two TCSers have bought a print of this work from me, so I figured it was probably worth posting here.

I did the initial sketch for this as part of the Daily Spitpaint Facebook group. In that group there are topics posted every day and we spend no longer than a half hour coming up with sketches for those topics. I'll attach the initial sketch below.

The topic was first landing on Mars. I decided to be boring and entirely literal and unimaginative with this one. The ship is based on the Orion spacecraft, and the planet is based on art by Kees Veenenbos. I feel bad that I copied somebody else's art, but when I started the painting I honestly believed this was a photograph. A half hour isn't much time to do research into reference.

My next commission is going to be an oil painting, not digital like this. And it's a horse.

Haha, of course others can post in here.

Here is a daily spitpaint I got a lot of votes on. The topic was "search for life."

Deep sea.

This is clearly the shallow sea, but this person is returning the nautilus to the deep sea, so it counts.

This is a whale-maid. The topic was "long hair white whale."

Actually, because of a poorly worded sentence in the Terms of Service, technically no one is allowed to post anywhere on this forum. We're all breaking the rules just be being here, but the admins look the other way as a courtesy.

Very impressive, I am envious of your skills. :P

I have a question though. I've been thinking about getting a stylus to put my Nexus to better use when drawing. Earlier in this thread you mentioned using the Sensu Solo stylus, would you recommend it? I saw some reviews that claimed it has kind of a short lifespan. Also, have you ever used a fine-point stylus for drawing? (I've been looking an Musemee Notiers which are fine-point styli, but if you haven't used them then nevermind about that.)

Godsdamn, you're good. And I don't just mean the impressive skills running in circles around some of us, I mean crazy good, the word "emotes" just got stuck in my head. Love the style, it has that glowing, radiant quality of stuff that leaps out and stays with you.

Sorry for taking so long to answer. I have one of those styluses, I used it to make this. I can't comment on durability because I have not used it much, but I think it's a good stylus. The only thing that annoys me is it's not pressure sensitive. I have read conflicting things on how durable it is, I suspect some of them are durable and some of them are duds.

I haven't used any fine point stylus with a tablet. I bought one but it was defective and I need to return it. However I normally use a Wacom tablet with my computer to do digital art and I'm a big fan of it.
