We need to bring school uniforms back, and have the department of education pay the fees for purchasing and fitting, in order to act as a screening tool for ill behaved and and anti-social children and as a means of allowing teachers to exercise discipline.

America, we're bringing Sailor Suits back!

Hears the Sailor Moon theme song in the background.

Wait, what does this have to do with Sailor Suits?

It's funny how what's controversial for you is the norm for Australia, and I certainly agree with you. Something I liked most about schooling was that no matter how rich or poor you were, you all were expected to dress the same.

I certainly think that school uniforms should be provided by the schools themselves though since the poorer kids were commonly disadvantaged regardless as they could not afford to get specialised clothes and the right "socks" and "shoes", they only could afford one pair for all matters. So having these uniforms being provided by the schools themselves would go a long way in getting rid of barriers related to wealth and make it more welcoming.

Personally I think private schools should be abolished and education should be free, it is our duty and our responsibility to make sure our next generations are well educated.

I don't see how a uniform does any of those things.

How would making people wear the same clothes screen for behavior? It seems like making everyone wear the same thing would just make people blend in easier. You'd probably screen for homes with poverty or single moms who don't have time to do laundry for their lazy kids, but looking like a mess doesn't mean someone's anti-social or going to get into fights.

How would it allow teachers to exercise discipline? I'm curious. I had a teacher in the 90s who tried to take a hat off a kid's head, after he refused when she asked nicely, and the student backhanded her, and broke her jaw. She was out of school for two months and wasn't sure if she was going to ever teach again. How would making students wear uniforms protect teachers from getting beat up?

We're not paying much for education as it is. Teachers make jack squat, and even then a lot of them pay for school supplies out of their own pocket because they can be awesome sometimes. If you make the Department of Education start paying for uniforms, they'll cut into other supplies and teacher salaries and the quality of education itself will go down.

Controversial take I've meant to express in a review for months, but now triggered by a further round of awards: Killing Eve is a sloppy, poorly written, tonally confused, fitfully entertaining show that doesn't deserve the mountains of critical praise being heaped upon it. It wastes a great cast on obnoxious material most of them can't rise above despite their best efforts, and the direction is unmemorable at best. If it weren't primarily created by and staffed with women in the normally male-dominated spy thriller genre, it would have piddled into the wind as quickly as it came and be remembered only for its puzzling mediocrity.

And for a show that's been lauded for its progressiveness,
Spoiler: show
making the typical old, grizzled cop character bisexual to build audience interest in a really unique character, and revealing his sexuality in one of few genuinely touching scenes, only to brutally kill him off in a telegraphed, unbearably stupid way one scene later
is just as shitty of a tactic as the trope has always been, and it should have resulted in some level of internet outrage.

I think disco is more enjoyable by people who weren't around when it came into being. I think it's perfectly fine music but I was born in 1980. Pop culture in the 80's was very derisive of disco music and it was made to be the uncoolest thing ever. I've always been fascinated by how disco disappeared completely while other genres that were niche at one point like rap and edm manage to stick around.

I suppose you could have an incredible rap or edm experience in nothing more than a large basement while you couldn't with disco? Idk.

Sarah Jeong should keep her job, so long as she doesn't do it again (or on an official account) while on NY Time's payroll, and everyone should lay off of her since she has apologized.
New York Times, and everyone who defends those tweets and that decision, however, shouldn't be left off the hook on account of being such massive hypocrites and shysters.

We - as a society - don't have a plastic problem.

We have a waste problem. Plastic is a miraculous material with a huge amount of benefits and advantages over alternatives. If it's used appropriately and dealt with appropriately, that can be environmental benefits too.

The problem is things that are designed to be used once and thrown away. The problem is things that are designed to be replaced instead of repaired. The problem is replacing things when they're not new any more, instead of when they're not working any more. The problem is needing whatever we want, as much as we want. as soon as we want.

And I'm not claiming to be innocent. I do small things, and I waste less than I did a while ago, but I need to start doing a lot more. I need to start avoiding waste when it's possible instead of when it's convenient.

Plastic does have a particular set of problems and I'm not for a moment suggesting we should just use it wherever possible. But the very thing that makes plastic waste so problematic - the lack of degradability - makes it great for reducing waste if you use it in the right way, and dispose of it in the right way. Almost all metal corrodes, plant-and animal-based materials break down sooner or later, even glass is normally easier to break than plastic.

I stopped wrapping my daily marmite roll which i have in my packed lunch for work in cling-film, some time ago. Instead of switching to foil or paper, though, I bought a sturdy tupperware pot of the right size. There's a lot more plastic in it than a few inches of cling-film, but I've had it a couple of years now and it's as good as new - my parents still have tupperware that wasn't new when I was a toddler, still perfectly sound.

Many plastic products can last an incredible amount of time. Many plastics can be recycled more or less indefinitely. Plastic products often take less energy to produce than alternatives. They often weigh a lot less too, and take less energy to transport. Plastic containers are pretty good at protecting their contents and reducing waste. A lot of biodegradable alternatives to plastic require a lot of land to grow, and the large-scale intensive production that tends to result from being the new must-have thing for our consumer culture often leads to large-scale habitat destruction to find space to grow it all.

If you switch from plastic to other materials and continue to use it just as wastefully, you might end up with a slightly different set of environmental detriments but you won't fix the world.

Palm oil is another thing that's vilified these days, because palm oil plantations are destroying the rainforest and killing the orangutans. But that's not a problem with palm oil: it's a problem with massive demand for cheap vegetable oil. Other oils would be as bad or worse if grown on the same scale, and the only solution is to use less.

A little while ago the Post Office was forced to put out a plea to the public to stop posting crisp packets without envelopes. Apparently, there's been a huge backlash against a leading crisp manufacturer because their packets are neither recyclable nor biodegradable, and protests in the form of thousands of people mailing all their empty packets to the company headquarters. It was on the news.

They interviewed a chap who was outraged about the amount of metallised plastic film in the multipack of crisps he'd bought and consumed. He had it all addressed and ready to post. "Six packets - and the outside wrapper!" Don't buy so many then. No-one needs crisps - indeed you're better off without them. You bought six packets of crisps solely because they're enjoyable to eat. You bought a multipack just because you wanted it as cheap as possible, instead of six individual packets, and as convenient as possible, instead of a sharing bag that you could dole out six portions from. But you're not the one creating the problem. No, you have the right to unlimited amounts of anything you want and you demand that someone else take away all the consequences.

We used to store certain leftovers in the fridge on a plate covered in cling wrap. I'd even keep cookies or brownies on the counter that way. Then we got a couple of big square-ish Rubbermaid tubs and it is just so much more convenient and less wasteful. The baked goods last longer too, imagine that.

Thanks for the necro yo, I needed it because I didn't want to double post and I've been holding this one back for a while.

Hallucinogenic consumption should be mandatory if one is to watch Into The Spider-Verse.

I don't have any proof of this and that's why I say "should". I'm not a scientist and I don't have access to those substances. But if I had the chance to test my theory I'd go for it.
