Only a True Gentleman Knows...?

Postby Marcuse » Mon Oct 26, 2015 2:22 pm

So I was trawling the internets and came upon this picture:

Image

The comments on the image indicated that the majority of people there thought that the man should be walking on the right, nearer the road, in order to better "protect" the woman in the image. But that got me to thinking; is that kind of "gentlemanly" behaviour respectful, or patronising? I wonder what people here think. TELL ME.

It is probably an outdated standard, since people aren't riding horses and (regularly) shooting guns off, and also women have apparently toughened up anyway since those days. Personally I still do it whenever I can remember it, but I don't think the missus freaks out if I don't, nor do most women. They might make a fuss if a man INSISTS on walking on the outside though, and in my opinion for good reason. That's kind of a silly thing to be confrontational about.

His shoes don't match and neither does her bag? Actually if he was holding the bag it would match his outfit. But those shoes have to go. A True Gentleman checks a mirror. Said the guy wearing a Sonic the Hedgehog shirt and Spiderman pajama pants. But they're all gray so they match!

Another thing a True Gentleman would point out is that he should take his date somewhere in a car. He seems to be old enough to own and operate a motor vehicle. Fuck they walking for?

I think the idea is that if a car sideswipes someone or jumps the curb, then the person further out gets hit, so you're protecting the other person with your body. My dad still does this for me and my sister if we're walking somewhere, especially on a main road near the house that has a weirdly narrow sidewalk.

It's the kind of etiquette I'd classify as similar to holding a door open for women always -- it's nice if you do it, but I won't demand it of anyone.

It's all nonsense anyway. The best way to protect women from harm is to keep them from going outside at all.

Does everyone know about this "rule" except me? I have never heard of this in my life. This is retarded. It's nothing like holding open the door, because holding a door serves some utility that getting hit by a car does not.

First and foremost, he's stepping on a crack. Does he not give any shits that he just broke his mother's back?

Second and threemost, is there any evidence they're a couple? Body language and lack of facial expression implies she's just overtaking him, in heels no less, though to be fair, there's a fifty-fifty chance he's walking backwards and she's getting the hell out of the way.

Third and twomost, that car is driving on the wrong side of the road. If anyone's going to get hit, it's another car.

Fourth and onemost, a true gentleman would not take a picture of two people on the street without their knowledge. That is the correct answer.

(Presumably, the only way to stop a bad guy with a transgender-friendly privacy law is a good guy with a transgender-friendly privacy law, and thus transgender-friendly privacy law rights need to be enshrined in the Constitution as well)

I knew about it but I thought it was decades out of date. I've never had a man insist on walking on the outside (unless you count the times when my ex would walk in the road with me on the kerb when there was no traffic, so that our heads were level) and if any did I'd be offended. Newsflash: this is the twenty-first century; courtesy to a woman means treating her as an adult and an equal.
